Description
Alan Turing (1912–1954) made seminal contributions to mathematical logic, computation, computer science, artificial intelligence, cryptography and theoretical biology. In this volume, outstanding scientific thinkers take a fresh look at the great range of Turing’s contributions, on how the subjects have developed since his time, and how they might develop still further. The contributors include Martin Davis, J. M. E. Hyland, Andrew R. Booker, Ueli Maurer, Kanti V. Mardia, S. Barry Cooper, Stephen Wolfram, Christof Teuscher, Douglas Richard Hofstadter, Philip K. Maini, Thomas E. Woolley, Eamonn A. Gaffney, Ruth E. Baker, Richard Gordon, Stuart Kauffman, Scott Aaronson, Solomon Feferman, P. D. Welch and Roger Penrose. These specially commissioned essays will provoke and engross the reader who wishes to understand better the lasting significance of one of the twentieth century’s deepest thinkers.

⭐I bought this book for what is perhaps an unusual and very personal reason. I had the good fortune to go to High School with Barry Cooper and have many good memories of him from that distant time. I have followed his career with interest and was delighted to be able to catch up with him at a school reunion some years ago. The news of his illness and sudden death came as a shock to his family, colleagues and friends. I chose to order this book since I knew from his family that it had meant a great deal to him. Sadly he did not live to hold it in his hands. I have spent some time looking through the contents and have begun reading some of the contributors’ essays. I must admit that some of the Maths used in the book is some way beyond me, but what is already apparent is that there is much of interest to the general and curious reader. The world of Mathematical Logic, and the legacy of Alan Turing is being shown to have far wider implications than many people may realise. This then is a timely book, belonging with the other recent books that have sought to make the Quantum science accessible to the general reader. I have awarded it four out of five stars only because of the inaccessibility of the Maths to the general reader: that said, this is inescapable given the complexity of the subject. In making some of that complexity clearer this book does a great service, and is a fitting memorial to a fine man and a great thinker. I believe that Barry would have been quietly proud and satisfied, and his co-editor Andrew Hodges is to be thanked for the work he did on completing the book.
⭐Il lavoro più esauriente su Alan Turing.Due grandi autori, il suo biografo e il suo più grande sostenitore e esperto della sua legacy.
