Description

Grossly ambitious and rooted in scientific scholarship, The Other Dark Matter shows how human excrement can be a life-saving, money-making resource—if we make better use of it.The average person produces about four hundred pounds of excrement a year. More than seven billion people live on this planet. Holy crap!Because of the diseases it spreads, we have learned to distance ourselves from our waste, but the long line of engineering marvels we’ve created to do so—from Roman sewage systems and medieval latrines to the immense, computerized treatment plants we use today—has also done considerable damage to the earth’s ecology. Now scientists tell us: we’ve been wasting our waste. When recycled correctly, this resource, cheap and widely available, can be converted into a sustainable energy source, act as an organic fertilizer, provide effective medicinal therapy for antibiotic-resistant bacterial infection, and much more.In clear and engaging prose that draws on her extensive research and interviews, Lina Zeldovich documents the massive redistribution of nutrients and sanitation inequities across the globe. She profiles the pioneers of poop upcycling, from startups in African villages to innovators in American cities that convert sewage into fertilizer, biogas, crude oil, and even life-saving medicine. She breaks taboos surrounding sewage disposal and shows how hygienic waste repurposing can help battle climate change, reduce acid rain, and eliminate toxic algal blooms. Ultimately, she implores us to use our innate organic power for the greater good. Don’t just sit there and let it go to waste.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐this is a fascinating book, but you may want to steer clear if you have a weak stomach! the author does not shy away from anything having to do with poop, and her descriptions can get quite graphic!

⭐I’m glad Lina wrote this book and want to appreciate it. Glancing through it, everything looks interesting. But I started reading and came up short on page 14 already. She writes that “Knossos… counted 80,000 to 100,000 inhabitants…. An average adult produces about a pound of poo a day…” Then she says this added up to 50,000 tons of feces daily. No way! 100,000 pounds divided by 2,000 pounds per ton works out to only 50 tons. That’s a pretty serious math error. Why didn’t Lina catch this? Why didn’t the U Chicago Press editors catch this?I’ll continue reading, but I hope there aren’t more errors of this scale.

⭐Awesome primer in history & science of poop disposal & reclamation. Only about 25% ‘fluff’ or excess verbosity. Author develops the story from stone-age through ancient Rome & Greece, to modern times. A great follow on would describe this maloderous topic in Space.

⭐Did taking a dump ever make you wonder if you were creating a gravitational anomaly? Well, maybe that’s kind of true. All jokes aside though, this book makes for fascinating reading, Elements of history, biology, environmental science all weave together, and are clearly grounded in a lot of hard research. The author has a rare talent for explaining complicated science in a way that does not oversimplify or condescend to the reader. I’m really enjoying this $%&^.

⭐Excellent analysis of a complex topic. A historical review of disposal and uses of excrement. A review of modern sewage treatment and end uses of “poop”. Clearly written, entertaining, and VERY informative.

⭐Learned a lot about human waste, its management and how it can be beneficial for humans and the environment we live in.

⭐This book takes a completely different view of how to approach waste water treatment and looks at how we have become blind to the uses and efficiencies that previous generations and civilisations made of sewage specifically. A worthwhile read for any water engineer who needs out of the box inspiration or anyone interested in environmentally friendly technology and methods that are not mainstream ideas but could be.
