Description

From the first attempts to split the atom to the discovery of the top quark, the 20th century has witnessed a revolution in basic physics. Probing successively smaller constituents of matter has also revealed the conditions present at the time of the Big Bang. In a series of essays by scientists who have been closely involved in this exciting research, The Particle Century describes the unprecedented advances in our understanding of the universe. The book covers major historical developments as well as current advances, including early accelerator physics, the rise of the Standard Model, new comprehension of the big bang theory, and the cutting edge of today’s investigations. These essays add novel insight into the continuing efforts to unravel the deepest secrets of nature.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review Among the authors of these 20 essays there are sufficient ‘good communicators’ that the serious reader can learn a great deal about the science, and there are sufficient ‘great names’ to give a thrill of authenticity from the first-hand accounts of the discoveries. And some of the ‘great names’ are among the best communicators.-Nature…to have produced such a collection of articles on a somewhat esoteric subject at a level that is comprehensible to the non-specialist is a considerable achievement.-Physics World[T]his is a fascinating and entertaining history of particle physics; most older particle physicists, dare I use the word older, will treasure it. … this is the book I will give to all my beginning graduate students in particle physics; if this doesn’t stimulate them to wonderful dreams and hopes, nothing will.-Martin Perl, APS History of Physics Forum Newsletter About the Author Gordon Fraser

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐While I found it challenging, I wasn’t bored. Considering all the different authors, Gordon Fraser has done an excellent job editing, making it very cohesive. I’m a beginner on the subject trying to get up to speed before results start coming in from the new Large Hadron Collider. I have an undergraduate science background that included math, but it was a long time ago. While this book was written for the layman it was a stretch for me and I certainly did not understand everything. But it’s a keeper that I marked up liberally and will be refering to again and again. That’s in contrast to some popular authors that offended me with their popular verbosity. With this book you get the real science by scientists who did it instead of a book written for ten year olds. Even though it was published way back in 1998 I believe it gets one up to the current discussion. In case it’s not obvious from the description, this book builds the history of particle physics cronologically and discribes the excitement of physicists involved as ever more powerful experiments revealed more of our world and drove theory.
