Description

The contributions of few contemporary scientists have been as far reaching in their effects as those of Nobel Laureate Werner Heisenberg. His matrix theory is one of the bases of modern quantum mechanics, while his “uncertainty principle” has altered our whole philosophy of science. In this classic, based on lectures delivered at the University of Chicago, Heisenberg presents a complete physical picture of quantum theory. He covers not only his own contributions, but also those of Bohr, Dirac, Bose, de Broglie, Fermi, Einstein, Pauli, Schrodinger, Somerfield, Rupp, ·Wilson, Germer, and others in a text written for the physical scientist who is not a specialist in quantum theory or in modern mathematics.Partial contents: introduction (theory and experiment, fundamental concepts); critique of physical concepts of the corpuscular theory (uncertainty relations and their illustration); critique of the physical concepts of the wave theory (uncertainty relations for waves, discussion of an actual measurement of the electromagnetic field); statistical interpretation of quantum theory (mathematical considerations, interference of probabilities, Bohr’s complementarity); discussion of important experiments (C. T. R. Wilson, diffraction , Einstein-Rupp, emission, absorption and dispersion of radiation, interference and conservation laws, Compton effect, radiation fluctuation phenomena, relativistic formulation of the quantum theory). An 80-page appendix on the mathematical apparatus of the quantum theory is provided for the specialist.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This book is based upon talks given by Heisenberg in the US which documents clearly the primary elements of our standard understanding of quantum mechanics by the individual credited with putting the whole picture together. While other approaches have been proposed, it is historical fact that this has been and is the majority perspective of the physics community from that time until now. Well worth reading.

⭐The book is good but the kindle version of it is not because the equations are too small to read and this spoils to reading of it. I might say that this is a general criticism I have of Kindle versions of old Dover books that should be corrected because I don’t intend to purchase any more of this type of book.

⭐It was interesting to see how the quantum theory developed with contemporaneous accounts but this book’s concepts are very difficult to grasp unless you are a physicist or a genius.

⭐After reading “The Physical Principles of the Quantum Theory” I can see why physicists tell us non-scientists that the quantum theory is a mathematical language. It was a hard read and honestly I skimmed over many of the proofs. Its hard to think of an industry that doesn’t use the results of Heisenberg’s or Schrödinger’s, to name a couple of pioneers, work with the quantum.

⭐This book presents in an elegant form Quantum Theory

⭐A treatise from one of the true geniuses of our time…this book along with Dirac’s “Principles of Quantum Mechanics” provides insight into the origins of matrix mechanics.

⭐Enhance my knowledge in Quantum Mechanics!

⭐This great book, a classic, is a exposure of Quantum Physics, its principles and mathematics.

⭐Easy read and fully understandable. (Lee Knight).

⭐Arrived as stated

⭐Apesar de já ter lido um de seus livros, não conhecia esse lado de Heisenberg, o livro é ótimo e recomendaria a todo físico, pois é muito didático. Simplesmente fantástico !

⭐Very useful who are interested in Quantum physics specialization

⭐Discovering Quantum Mechaniscs basis and history through Heisenberg eyes must be a very nice experience so the book itself is a must have, but the Kindle edition is unreadable : all mathematical formulas are so thin that it’s even difficult to see that they are not a text separator line but contains some symbols. Does anyone try opening the books at Amazon before publishing them on the store ?
