Description
This book is designed as a textbook for students who need to fulfil their science requirements. Part I explores classical physics from its beginnings with Descartes, Galileo, Kepler, and Newton, to the relativity theories of Einstein. Special emphasis is given to the development of the objective, materialist, and deterministic worldview of classical physics. The influence of Newtonian physics on other fields of science and on society is emphasized. Finally, some of the problems with the worldview of classical physics are discussed and a preview of quantum physics is given.

⭐This book is well written and pitchedat a useful level, but severely compromised bythe author’s decision to use it as a vehiclefor his own philosophical views. Thesespeculations revolve around “quantum consciousness” andare presented as the accepted thinking ofpracticing physicists, which they decidedlyare not. Looking at his titles, it is clear that the authorstands perilously close to crankdom, and although one can learn some physics fromthis book, I would not recommend it.
⭐Goswami has created not only a comprensive and engaging history of physics up to the modern era of quantum mechanics, he challenges his readers to broaden their horizons by linking each movement in physics with the mindset that has created it and which it instills. Science is not intellect objectively analysing a seperate material universe, but biased intellect trying to create a mental model of that universe. By analysing the philosophical underpinnings of different scientific approaches, he argues that the worldview that came from Newtonian physics is obsolete in the era of quantum mechanics. For daring to call out the philosophical torpor of the the scientific community, one reviewer has already called him a “crank”, and insinuated that he misrepresents his views as those of the entire scientific community, which he certainly does not. Goswami is a welcome voice of critical dissent in the scientific bastions of positivism.
