Description
This long-awaited complete edition of Hopkins’s poetry offers serious students far more guidance than has ever been available. The texts are arranged chronologically, rhythms are clarified, thousands of words and phrases are annotated for the first time, and far greater attention is paid tohis neglected early output. Compiled by one of the world’s leading Hopkins scholars, the book includes an introduction, extensive commentary, and headnotes for each poem setting out intellectual or biographical background and critical responses.

⭐I had been looking for this book for two years. I thought I had tracked it down twice, but on one occasion the book went astray, and on the second occasion someone had already bought it from the bookstore ( both times in the US). I was, therefore, extremely pleased when it was listed by Amazon as being available. The book arrived well within the shipping times given, and is in perfect condition. Many thanks, Amazon.
⭐Sadly, I don’t yet own a copy of this book, but I borrow it from the Uni. library all the time. And I have to say that it is THE best edition of Hopkins’ poetry you’ll find. One of the very wonderful and special aspects about Norman MacKenzie’s editing, here, is that–stupendous Hopkins-scholar that he was–MacKenzie provides ALL the diacritical notations from Manuscript “A” that Hopkins felt were necessary to read his poems correctly. From simple ‘caesuras’ and ‘accents,’ to ‘slurs,’ ‘square-ties,’ and ‘double-accent marks,’ the painstaking transposition of these symbols, from Hopkins’ original manuscripts (before Robert Bridges started pressuring him to cut back on his notations), make this Edition the most accurate and honest one available.I believe that both the Oxford Paperbacks and the Penguin Classics editions contain notes at the very back regarding the placement of accents, caesuras, and a few other diacritical marks, that weren’t included in the actual text (only “simple accents” are), but obviously this edition trumps both by having all those marks (and more) already in the pages of poetry themselves. On top of which, it is a larger, more readable book, and it is bound more carefully, with better quality paper. My SOLE criticism is that, despite some very scholarly introductory essays, there are no notes to the poems themselves, which, as readers of Hopkins know, are sometimes linguistically obscure, densely allusive, and of the highest lyric quality. My suggestion would be to supplement this volume (if you ever get it, or if it is ever reprinted) with the Oxford World’s Classic ed. which has the most informative and helpful notes of all the Hopkins’ collections.
