Description

This volume presents cutting-edge theory and research on emotions as constructed events rather than fixed, essential entities. It provides a thorough introduction to the assumptions, hypotheses, and scientific methods that embody psychological constructionist approaches. Leading scholars examine the neurobiological, cognitive/perceptual, and social processes that give rise to the experiences Western cultures call sadness, anger, fear, and so on. The book explores such compelling questions as how the brain creates emotional experiences, whether the “ingredients” of emotions also give rise to other mental states, and how to define what is or is not an emotion. Introductory and concluding chapters by the editors identify key themes and controversies and compare psychological construction to other theories of emotion.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is an excellent resource for those interested in emotion and I would give the book itself five stars. However, be aware that the Kindle edition does not have any page numbers, despite what the advertising says. This is problem for anyone using this book for research purposes.

⭐Good overview of psychological construction theory. Interesting chapters, good set of authors.

⭐The Psychological Construction of Emotion brings together an impressive collection of some of the world’s most cutting-edge emotion researchers to provide their thoughts on the construction of emotion. Overall, the constructionist theory pushes against a “faculty” approach to psychology, in which psychological processes are thought to represent functionally and biologically distinct entities. Instead, these authors advance a “constructionist” account, in which psychological phenomena are literally built from more basic substrates that cross illusory boundaries of memory, affect, cognition, etc. As the authors argue, this perspective has the potential to settle long-standing confusions in our field and open new avenues for profitable research. This text provides a spectacularly comprehensive examination of how psychological constructionism applies to emotion. For example, chapters focus on philosophical, psychological, neuroscientific, cultural, interpersonal, evolutionary and even statistical approaches to emotion constructionism. There is considerable discussion connecting the constructivist theory to the founders of our field (e.g., James, Wundt), which provides a strong historical context for the work. The editors even bring a basic emotion researcher and appraisal theorists into the conversation to promote dialogue between these theoretical perspectives on emotion. In my opinion, you will not find such a thorough dissection of psychological constructionism and its implications for emotion in any other text. The book’s layout is cleverly designed to allow readers to easily extract important information. It is divided into sections that outline I) the theory’s foundations, II) more detailed accounts of the construction of emotion, III) neuroscientific and psychological approaches to the concept of core affect, IV) how constructionism compares to appraisal and basic emotion theories, and V) exciting ideas for the future implications of the theory. Furthermore, each chapter begins with a short set of questions that summarize how each author’s perspective contributes to the overarching goals of the book. I found this very helpful in guiding my reading. In all, I found the text to be full of interesting insights, important advances, and new ideas for future research. It’s a must-read for anyone interested in thoroughly understanding this very exciting theory.
