Description

The Stone Age, the Iron Age, and the steam and electrical ages all saw the reach of humankind transformed by new technology. Now we are living in the Quantum Age, a revolution in everyday life led by our understanding of the very, very small.Quantum physics account for 30 percent of American GDP and are at the heart of every electronic device; every smartphone and laser we use.Acclaimed popular science author Brian Clegg brings his trademark clarity and enthusiasm to a book that will give the world around you a new sense of wonder.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Was looking for a book to break down physics into something relevant, and from the description thought this might be it, but no. This book is poorly written. I’m sure the author is spot on about everything he’s saying, but it’s hard to make it out. In part, could be because he’s British and I’m American. But Charles Dickens was also British… I’m a professional editor, so no stranger to clumsy writing, but something else is going on here that’s harder to fix. Author forgets who he’s talking to. I picked this book after spending a semester learning physics, so I’m not totally uninformed, but the conversation went alternately surface level, deep dive, surface, deep. Looking for an author who can speak to intelligent people but in such a way that they can understand without a background in physics. Feels like this book is for no one because it’s too alternately too deep for a novice and too shallow for a scientist. Good concept though if you could work with a lay editor who would be honest and say, “I don’t get it, and if I don’t get it, your readers won’t either.”

⭐The author doesn’t cover a whole lot, but what he does cover is interesting and intriguing.

⭐A clear explanation of a difficult subject.

⭐Very readable and a good explanation of a complex subject.

⭐I bought the Kindle edition for very reasonable money, quantum stuff seems to be my new interest at the moment. I’m definitely not an Einstein so I need to keep it as straight forward as possible. I really enjoyed the book, it is well written and in as plain an English as possible when explaining the inexplicable! The book is aimed at folks like myself, interested, curious, but not studying physics at university. And remember, if you think you understand quantum physics, you probably don’t!

⭐I have read many books on quantum physics: historical accounts, (very) basic descriptions of the maths and so on. This is the first that goes into the details of how quantum physics affects the world around us and in particular the technology that I am using to post this review. I will be looking for more by this author.

⭐Fascinating insight into the world of quantum mechanics and how it is used to produce computers, lasers etc. The author even explains why a pair of glasses is a quantum device.Easy to follow for the most part, just a few things I couldn’t get my head around, which is understandable when trying to explain something as esoteric as this to the layman. A bit of dry humour is also thrown in, and some very interesting conclusions at the end of the book.

⭐This book started from the basics, and I was not sure how much I would get out of it, having picked up a fair amount in my scientific career. It was presented in as straightforward a way as possible for such a complicated subject, but still went on to cover many things that I had not previously come across, as well as the latest developments.

⭐Brian Clegg’s style of writing is very accessible. He explains things well.I have a few books on this topic and I really like this one. He takes the complex and makes it simple. He put a new spin (no pun intended) on an old topic.A good read.
