Description
More than 98 percent of human genes are shared with two species of chimpanzee. The ‘third’ chimpanzee is man. Jared Diamond surveys out life-cycle, culture, sexuality and destructive urges both towards ourselves and the planet to explore the ways in which we are uniquely human yet still influenced by our animal origins.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Jared Diamond is one of my favourite writers, so I am perhaps a little bit biased. This is one of his earlier books and I enjoyed it as much as I did his later books.I simply like the way he develops a theme, looks in fine detail at the issues involved, and weaves in beautifully an abundance of stories drawn from his own experiences and especially his extensive travels. His style is lucid, flowing, an easy read, providing much food for thought and a wealth of information, especially for someone like me who was not educated in the natural sciences (beyond secondary school) but is fascinated by it.As someone passionate about the environmental health of the planet and deeply concerned about human overpopulation I share many of the writer’s concerns. For me a relaxing hour or two is reading one of Jared Diamond’s books which I always find hard to put down.
⭐Great book although a bit dated now but still relevant in nearly every way, although there is a bit of a lacuna about Denisovans and new discoveries about Neanderthals because this all occurred after publication. As usual Diamond is excellent in his research and references and most of the ideas are fun, brave, and have the ring of truth as well.
⭐Jared Diamond hits the nail on the head every time. Another fascinating book. However he did lose me a bit at one point. I found him side-tracking. Overall another great read.
⭐Definitely met expectations. Loads of factual information presented in a very readable format. So interesting and I learned lots.
⭐A classic.
⭐It is a must read to understand the human history and actual behavior of our human beings. Jared Diamond is simply amazing.
⭐Interesting book but could be condened in few pages
⭐Diamond sites many intreging facts from research on other species which support his “third chimpanzee” holding. But, this book is also full of personal views without solid references.A long and somewhat dissapointing work.
⭐There are some nice ideas (if you like J.D’s style), but keep in mind it’s outdated by now. Also, some chapters (dealing with art or our place in the universe) read somewhat strange, in that though the author presents what he considers to be “factual” information, some of the things he says simply are not true, in that they are very broad generalizations – I cannot say more, as I don’t want to spoil it for anyone wishing to buy this.
⭐This book covers most of the themes that Diamond covers in more detail in later books, such as the brilliant “Guns, Germs and Steel”. This makes it a good introduction to Diamond’s ideas. As with his other books, the style is easy to read and bursting with fascinating ideas to challenge our assumptions. The reason I only gave it 4 stars is that it is a little dated – there has been a lot of ground-breaking research, particularly in genetics, since this book was published in 1992 which Diamond would surely draw upon if he were to update it today. However, having said that, I think the key conclusions of the book would remain the same, so it’s still very much worth reading.
⭐I learned a lot not just about our species but also myself. The analysis of all topics is brilliant. I would recommend this book to everybody having an interest in the future of our planet. We are the most badly behaved of all species and we can (and should) do something about it.If you love your children, don’t have them.
⭐Must read. This book was written twenty five years ago and is even more relevant now than it was then. Jared Diamond’s books are always well worth reading. Sadly not enough people take notice of his views and conclusions. Am sending copies to my teen-age grand children, as I am ashamed of the world we are leaving to their generation.
⭐Great book . Very thought provoking about the human race. I learnt a lot about about evolution and history
