⭐I don’t know why this book is so famous. It is well-written, but it is incredibly mistaken. Kenny does not understand the five ways and his critiques are all off the mark. For example, he claims in the third way that perhaps prime matter and form could be necessary beings, but that is not possible. For prime matter depends upon form for existence and likewise form for material beings is dependent upon prime matter. They are not really underived necessary beings.Much of his discussion for the other ways is interesting but ultimatley off the mark. The points sometimes do nothing to invalidate Aquinas’ points. Also, he keeps on wrongly insisting in some of the ways that Aquinas is committing the quantifier shift fallacy. But this is a deep misunderstanding. There is no such fallacy. Aquinas knows that he has not yet proven God is one or that there is only one unmoved mover, etc. That is why Aquinas explicitly goes on to prove that God is one some questions later on in the Summa. Anyone who says there is a quanitifer shift fallacy here has failed to read beyond the five ways in the Summa. Thus, this book is useful to see how wrong Kenny is, and also important to read because it is well known. But Kenny simply does not understand Thomas. For a much better book on the five ways see Christopher Martin’s book: God and Explanations.
⭐Anthony Kenny shows us the mechanics of how St. Thomas Aquinas thinks. Even for those who are unfamiliar with Scholastic Philosophy in general can appreciate how Aristotle’s Logic is used with rigor to expound on this particular exposition. Kenny pulls this off with uncommon clarity while exposing the intellectual structure that supports the “Angelic” Doctor’s arguments. One should read Bertrand Russell’s critique of the “Five Proofs” in conjunction with Anthony Kenny’s monograph to get a balanced appraisal of St. Thomas’ achievement. If this is done one can see that Kenny’s contribution to the subject is essential.
⭐The book is excellent and everything I wanted however the underlining and marginalia were dreadfully distracting from the book’s content. I will not buy another used book in the same condition. Very distracting!
⭐A classic.
⭐Présentation des 5 chemin selon St Thomas claire, précise, concise, complète et imparciale à la fois. – Comme tous les ouvrage de Sir Kenny consacrés à la “philosophie chrétienne”.Just one word: very good!!!
