Description
Muhammad: a frank look at his influential (and violent) life and teachingsIn The Truth about Muhammad, New York Times bestselling author and Islam expert Robert Spencer offers an honest and telling portrait of the founder of Islam-perhaps the first such portrait in half a century-unbounded by fear and political correctness, unflinching, and willing to face the hard facts about Muhammad’s life that continue to affect our world today. From Muhammad’s first “revelation” from Allah (which filled him with terror that he was demonpossessed) to his deathbed (from which he called down curses upon Jews and Christians), it’s all here-told with extensive documentation from the sources that Muslims themselves consider most reliable about Muhammad.Spencer details Muhammad’s development from a preacher of hellfire and damnation into a political and military leader who expanded his rule by force of arms, promising his warriors luridly physical delights in Paradise if they were killed in his cause. He explains how the Qur’an’s teaching on warfare against unbelievers developed-with constant war to establish the hegemony of Islamic law as the last stage.Spencer also gives the truth about Muhammad’s convenient “revelations” justifying his own licentiousness; his joy in the brutal murders of his enemies; and above all, his clear marching orders to his followers to convert non-Muslims to Islam-or force them to live as inferiors under Islamic rule.In The Truth about Muhammad, you’ll learn- The truth about Muhammad’s multiple marriages (including one to a nine-year-old) – How Muhammad set legal standards that make it virtually impossible to prove rape in Islamic countries – How Muhammad’s example justifies jihad and terrorism – The real “Satanic verses” incident (not the Salman Rushdie version) that remains a scandal to Muslims – How Muhammad’s faulty knowledge of Judaism and Christianity has influenced Islamic theology–and colored Muslim relations with Jews and Christians to this day.Recognizing the true nature of Islam, Spencer argues, is essential for judging the prospects for largescale Islamic reform, the effective prosecution of the War on Terror, the democracy project in Afghanistan and Iraq, and immigration and border control to protect the United States from terrorism. All of which makes it crucial for every citizen (and policymaker) who loves freedom to read and ponder The Truth about Muhammad

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I found this book to be extremely well-researched, intelligently presented, and surprisingly readable for such a weighty subject. He also offers intelligent solutions at the end of the book.I was particularly interested in this book because I am an American Jew living in Israel for thirteen years, and feel the effect of Islam on my life. While a tiny minority of my interactions with Muslim-Arabs have been negative (and even those have been relatively minor), such as the time a pre-teen Arab-Muslim pretended to shoot me with his toy machine gun in the middle of downtown Jerusalem while his parents looked me in the eye and snickered, the vast majority of interactions ranged from neutral to friendly. So what does that have to do with Spencer’s book? The neutral and friendly actions were almost always with not-very-committed Muslims. (To contrast, in my negative experience, the mother of the boy was wearing a head veil, so I assume she’s a committed Muslim.)This fits in with Spencer’s research. Countless times, I’ve encountered Arab-Muslims who would truly like to live in peace. None of them were particularly religious–according to the standards of Islam. (For example, one attended the sunrise prayer religiously, but ignored the other four daily prayers. Or others fast during Ramadan, but rarely pray or do anything else religious.) Several of these Arab-Muslims even stated that if the so-called Palestinians would ever get their own state, they would still choose to stay in Israel, even ruled by a Jewish government (against Sharia law)! These moderate Arab-Muslims just want to work and have enough to support their families comfortably, have the access (which they have in Israel) to quality health care and education. In other words, they want a normal life. Many of them have aims similiar to those in the West. Who is preventing these Arab-Muslims from living a normal life? The Arab-Muslim leaders who DO religiously follow the Koran. This is Spencer’s point. My point is this: the average Muslim moderate is one who anyways picks and chooses what to believe from the Koran. If he frees himself to ignore the call to prayer five times a day, or to fast during Ramadan, etc., he automatically frees himself to ignore Islamic dictates to hate, harm, or kill non-Muslims. Up until the time I read this book, I wasn’t sure whether this was simply my own (and therefore, limited) experience, or whether Islam is inherently incompatible with values such as tolerance and mercy. Spencer shows that the only way for a Muslim to be a merciful, tolerant person is for the Muslim to ignore a significant amount of Mohammed’s teachings and to ignore Mohammed’s personal example, essentially preventing that Muslim from being a totally dedicated Muslim.Pre-Mohammed: Jewish sources relate how wandering Jews were sometimes received very nicely by nomadic Arabs because the Arabs viewed the Jews as distant relatives, commenting on how Ishmael and Isaac were brothers. This desire to find a common bond regardless of religious differences was changed by Mohammed. Spencer clearly shows this transition, although he doesn’t give this particular example of pre-Islamic friendly relations.By the way, to those who accuse Spencer of bigotry, please note that had he wanted to simply bash Islam, he could’ve thrown in a lot about present-day Islamic practice, such as female genital mutilation or “honor” killings. Yet he totally ignored these horrors due to his focus on original documents (presumably, they didn’t mention these horrors, or else he would’ve included them). He could also have said quite a bit about the harrassment Christian-Arabs presently undergo from Muslim-Arabs, something rarely addressed in Western media. I think his avoidance of easy emotional incitement shows integrity and sincerity. To further illustrate Spencer’s conclusions, look at fundamentalists in other religions as opposed to Muslim fundamentalists: In Israel, when a Jewish girl marries a Muslim-Arab, she is sought out and rescued (IF she indicates a desire to be rescued). She’s given free counseling, housing, food, and legal services. (One Jewish girl sought rescue after seeing two of her Muslim-Arab sisters-in-law punished by being burned alive. She didn’t say what their alledged sin was.) The people organizing these rescues are Jewish “fundamentalists”, usually labelled as ultra-Orthodox, Haredi, or Hassidic. For Orthodox Jews, intermarriage is a big sin, yet they obviously treat these girls with a lot of understanding. (You may not agree with their views on intermarriage, but the point is, THEY think she’s done something terrible, yet they still treat her with a great deal of kindness, as according to the dictates of their religion and their fundamentalist leaders.) I believe Christian (and Mormon, and Bahai, and Buddhist, etc.) fundamentalists would also behave as compassionately. When a Muslim girl marries a Jew, or even if she marries a Muslim whom her family thinks is the wrong kind of Muslim, she is sought out and killed–by Muslim fundamentalists following the dictates of their religion and their fundamentalist leaders. That is Spencer’s point. There’s something inherently imbalanced in Islam itself. And if we want to stop Arab terror and human rights abuse, we need to deal with the root of the problem: Islam.
⭐Here we go again with one of those, anti-Islam, anti-Quran and of course anti-Muhammad books notoriously composed to pummel Islam. I give credit to the author for his crafty attempt to build his case through misinterpretation, misquotations and out of context presentation of the Quranic text. The analyses derived from fabricated and manipulated stories by the author are obviously far from the truth. The author needs to look at the “true Islam” from a scholarly standpoint and not from the devious mind of Bin Ladin and his dubious sources. The sources and states responsible for breading the Bin Ladins around the world are punishable by Islamic laws for violations of human life, dignity and respect. These terrorists have disgraced Islam by falsely acting in its name. The true Islam is about love, sacrifice, peace and absolute freedom. It resists and condemns oppression, tyranny, murder and every act of terror. The author has not made an honest attempt to research and discover the “true Islam”. Islam supports every basic principle of democracy and is the first religion that mandated women’s rights into law. Mohammad in the seventh century AD eliminated the gender bias. The true Islam is the exact opposite of what the title of this book is projected to convey. Muhammad took the world by surprise and today has almost a third of the world under his wing with inherent potential to grow on its own. It is interesting that the beginning chapters of this book, as it turns out are surprisingly gracious toward Islam and Muhammad, and totally against the intended purpose of the book. The quotes and references from renowned authors such as Karen Armstrong and many others cited in the book seem to have diminished most of his attacks with a stamp of disapproval on the author’s own invective remarks. The truth amazingly shines through with remarkable charisma. I am not at all baffled by the strength with which Islam has been able to deflect these attacks on a regular basis with incredible resilience. An interesting complaint about Muhammad’s teachings throughout the book is about the borrowings of the events, episodes and the teaching from Torah, Bible and other ancient books. In most cases the attacks on Muhammad ricochet directly as attacks on Judaism and Christianity because of some of the basic similarities of the teachings. Islam came as a refinement and an upgrade to Torah, Bible and Zabor. The author misses the basic difference between these religions. Islam stands apart from other religions on the basis that it gave a way of life with a complete set of laws of governance along with strategies to enforcement a system of justice focusing on human rights.Islam has taken every possible assault for last 1400 years and stayed unblemished. Pure Islam and the system of justice associated with it are so appealing that it still captivates people of other faith. I am talking about the true Islam and not some fabricated version of it. In fact such attacks reinforce my outlook about the resilience of this monolithic coliseum of faith and its ability to endure these storms of hate.Out of the 6636 verses of Quran there are three or four that are usually taken out of context and are disingenuously misapplied without being misquoted. Portrayal of following verses and events will serve as examples:Page: 20This is a verse in Quran about maintenance of hygiene and cleanliness for women going through menstrual periods. The Quran advises men to refrain from sexual engagement and be supportive to their wives while they experience the discomfort of the menstrual cycle.Following is a translation by a renowned translator Pickthall:”They question thee (O Muhammad) concerning menstruation. Say: It is (difficult), so let women alone at such time and go not in unto them till they are cleansed. And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allah hath enjoined upon you. Truly Allah loveth those who turn unto Him, and loveth those who have a care for cleanness”.Instead of using the above translation the author prefers a translation given below so he can manipulate the words incorrectly or wrongly used by the translator: “They ask thee concerning women’s courses. Say: They are a hurt and a pollution: So keep away from women in their courses, and do not approach them until they are clean. But when they have purified themselves, ye may approach them in any manner, time, or place ordained for you by Allah. For Allah loves those who turn to Him constantly and He loves those who keep themselves pure and clean”. It is not surprising that the author finds appeal in the above translation and not the first to lead his audience to believe that the statement “they are a hurt and a pollution,” is insulting of women which is contextually contrary to Quran. The author deliberately selects the first translation to spin one out into a completely opposite direction to this verse’s intended goal. In this case the restrictions for interaction between husband and wife are designed to maintain hygiene and cleanliness recommended by today’s medical practices, and Quran is implementing modern day medical advice. Unfortunately the author like most anti-Islamists is taking this verse out of context by focusing on a poorly translated version; ” But when they have purified themselves, ye may approach them in any manner, time, or place ordained for you by Allah” to mislead the reader into believing that force is acceptable. Following is another example of how the author manipulates words taken out of context and creates a fictitious war scene suggesting insensitivity of Islam towards human values. On page 127 : It is about the combat between Ali and Amr – I quote the author: ” Amr challenged the Muslims to send out a man for hand-to-hand combat. Muhammad sent Ali to fight Amr.Ali said to Amr: “I invite you to God, and his apostle and to Islam”.Amr refused and said : ” O son of my brother, I do not want to kill you.”Ali was less sentimental. He replied to his uncle: “But I want to Kill you,” and he did. Islamic loyalty was deeper than blood.” This event is insidiously forged. First of all, Amr was not the brother of Ali’s father as stated above. Amr, if at all, might have been a very distant relative of Ali’s father with no blood connections. Secondly, Amr had come there to kill Muhammad who was a father figure for Ali because ̶̶ Mohammad raised Ali. Ali was Muhammad’s first cousin, a mentor, and father-in-law. Ali was fighting both an enemy of Islam and Muhammad. Therefore the statement that Ali was fighting his uncle is false. There was no blood relationship between Amr and Ali. Ali subdued and disposed of Amr with a lightening attack. The author grossly twisted the events and the background of the combatants to create a negative image of Islam.Ali is the most powerful personality of Islam. His contributions to the spiritual and philosophical Islam are beyond expression. As an educationist and the central element of the reform movement of Muhammad, Ali can be characterized as the architect and the model of excellence of Islam. His knowledge, wisdom and intellectual ingenuity among the scholars, philosophers and educationalists radiates across the world. I advise the author to rise above prejudices and to swing past unconventional rhetoric and learn about the true Islam with honesty and an open mind through Ali and Muhammad and his perspective about Islam will change.
⭐Superb book. Very interesting. Robert Spencer is a fantastic author who knows how to capture readers minds completely.
⭐Scientific and objective. Muhammad never said he was more than a man and men are never perfect. As a war lord did he commit genocide? Sure he did and those were the rules of war in Arabia back then. Did he sleep with a 9 years old girl? Sure he did and that was usual in his days. Did he allow his followers to have 4 wives? Did he give women a lesser statute than men? Sure he did but it was a progress in this era. Do these proven and recorded facts all change the veracity and authenticity of his message? Should muslims start doubting Sira and Hadith? That is for every Muslim to decide.
⭐A brilliant book. Explains about mohammed from his early days starting out as a “prophet” and points out numerous inconsistencies throughout his lifetime. Really is worth reading for anyone who wants an understanding of how islam came to be and who the man was that invented this ideology.
⭐Excellent book as it tells the truth about Muhammad which can be sometimes twisted by he followers of this particular ideology. Spencer is a fantastic writer, If you want the truth about Islam and its founder this is the book for you.
⭐THE MOST PRECISE AND CONCISE BOOK DISHING OUT NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH ABOUT MUHAMMAD.
