Description
“Far and away the best book written about Senator Kennedy” from the Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and bestselling author (The New York Times). Structured around the 1968 Democratic presidential campaign, The Unfinished Odyssey of Robert Kennedy offers an in-depth exploration of Robert Kennedy, both as a man and a politician. Kennedy’s mass appeal to minority groups, his antiwar stance, and his support from Catholics made him unlike any other politician of his stature in the late 1960s. Acclaimed journalist David Halberstam dives into Kennedy’s career, covering his work as US attorney general and campaign manager for his brother John, his run for a New York state senate seat, and his candidacy in the 1968 Democratic presidential primary. Through this crucial period, he charts Kennedy’s evolution as one of the nation’s most clear-headed progressives, ultimately revealing a man who—even now—personifies the shift toward a more equal America. This ebook features an illustrated biography of David Halberstam including rare images from the author’s estate.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I should first comment that I lived 1968 as a kid, and made and carried sign supporting RFK, watched his victory speech from the Ambassador, and was continuing to watch the coverage when he was shot almost immediately afterwords. That said, Halberstam’s book is more a memorial than a biography or a history. Reading it now – for the first time, 44 years after the final event – I can say it describes a feeling about RFK and the times that was, at the time, shared by many, but was by no means universal. It mixes strong opposition to the Vietnam War and LBJ with an idealized, but not historically accurate, picture of RFK and the times. Much of the commentary in it – and, there is a great deal of commentary – does not stand the test of time. The book is useful as a reflection of the strong feelings of one particular strand of the antiwar community of 1968 (there were several such strands) about the war, RFK, LBJ, Senator McCarthy, etc.; however, it should >not< be taken as an honest history of the time, or biography of RFK. ⭐What a pivotal year that still has a lasting effect on the US . The assault weapon problem would not exist had RFK lived. ⭐Halberstam’s beautiful writing does justice, as few writers could, to the heady, thrilling and tragic story of RFK’s 1968 campaign. History, alive on the page. ⭐David Halberstam could write a cookbook and it would be engrossing. The emotions that Robert Kennedy's campaign experienced just smack one in the face. It all comes shining through in those pages. Miss looking forward to any new books he would create. ⭐You have to understand this book is so much more than the sum of it's parts. I will always mourn the fact that we never had the chance to live with Bobby Kennedy as a President or even as a statesman. Then to have the transcendent writer of our generation address this subject.David Halberstam always wrote like the great journalist that he was. No matter how long or involved his material was you always grasped and comprehended it. I could list all his greatest books, The Best and the Brightest, The Reckoning and all the others were great eyes and mind openers. This early book of his can only make me realize how much I wanted to read his last volume on war that was unfortunately never to be, due to his untimely death.More detached than RFK but both had such lucid minds. ⭐Halberstram's account of the 1968 presidential race as part of Robert Kennedy's campaign is an insightful look into the mindset of RFK, the political climate at the time and the social changes in the United States during the time of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement. I can't help to wonder, what if he had lived? During the book we see a candidate, a former US Attorney General, sharpen his political skills and become more in tuned with the new generation of Americans demanding social change and upheaval. An unfinished odyssey it is. Good read. ⭐An inside look at what might have been. Other reviewers have quibbles about style and therefore miss the message. This book is about the evolution of RFK into a candidate like no other in the 20th century. He was still a work in progress when he was ripped from us by an assassin.Who that assassin really was and what RFK would have done as president is a subject for someone else to explore. ⭐This is one of Halberstam's good politically good books. The author discusses who Kennedy was and who he became. This book was important to me because I remember so well the feeling of despair after his death
