Description

A history of how anti-Semitism evolved into the Holocaust in Germany: “If any book can tell what Hitlerism was like, this is it” (Alfred Kazin).Lucy Dawidowicz’s groundbreaking The War Against the Jews inspired waves of both acclaim and controversy upon its release in 1975. Dawidowicz argues that genocide was, to the Nazis, as central a war goal as conquering Europe, and was made possible by a combination of political, social, and technological factors. She explores the full history of Hitler’s “Final Solution,” from the rise of anti-Semitism to the creation of Jewish ghettos to the brutal tactics of mass murder employed by the Nazis. Written with devastating detail, The War Against the Jews is the definitive and comprehensive book on one of history’s darkest chapters.

⭐Excellent

⭐This seminal classic historical work by scholar and teacher Lucy Dawidowicz is a stunning book that both graphically and systematically spells out the details of the horrifying war of annihilation forged against the European Jews by the Third Reich. In a world that seen so much published regarding this subject, this work stands as benchmark. Ms. Dawidowicz addresses herself to the most fundamental of questions regarding this unspeakable policy of ritual race murder; how could a modern, sophisticated and industrial country such as Germany have perpetrated such a deliberate reign of horror against a whole people simply because they were Jewish? And, although we have seen recent books such as “Problem From Hell” that deal more systematically with the issue of modern examples of state sponsored genocide, the simple fact is that the Holocaust seems to have occurred because, for the first time in modern history, it was both politically and logistically possible. In other words, the Nazis had both the method and the impetus to do the unspeakable.Seen in this fashion, the equation becomes at once political, social, and technological; given the irrational impulse to do so, the modern Nazi regime was able to harness all of its energies, spiritual, political and material, into such a devastating and sustained campaign against the Jews, and was therefore uniquely able to forge the most bloody of final results. The author’s approach winds the reader through several phases of the Holocaust phenomenon with a careful, meticulous and methodical consideration of the social, economic, and political influences swirling through this witches’ brew of evil. In the first part of the book, entitled “The Final Solution”, she traces the origins and growth of anti-Semitism, a form of patent racism so virulent it threatened to exterminate the Jews from all of continental Europe. In so tracing the roots and origins of the Nazis and their fellow travelers, she shows how the rise of National Socialism revolved around the scapegoating of the Jews. The execution of this plan was enacted in the ghettos and small towns of Poland and Germany as well as in a network of forced labor camps and concentration camps throughout Eastern Europe. In the second part of the book, “”The Holocaust”, the author dramatically describes how the plight of the Jews was gradually worsened and how the violence and deprivation grew systematically more and more horrible with each passing month. Inhabitants of camps or ghettos led lives of incredible hardship and deprivation, struggling helplessly against hunger, disease, exposure to extremes of temperature and weather, and of course, to the wanton cruelties of the Nazi regime. This is indeed interesting material, detailing the ways in which Jewish groups both within the ghettos and the death camps worked together to make the best out of an impossible situation. This is a heart-rending book, one that accurately portrays the ways in which Jews were deceived and betrayed by the authorities, convinced they were being resettled rather than being slated for extermination. Ms. Dawidowicz writes with compassion and authority covering this intrinsically difficult issues, as one reads of lives torn asunder, families ripped apart, and wholesale rape, mutilation, and murder. This book, published more than thirty years ago, is one of the most comprehensive, best documented, and well-written book to have appeared on the subject of the Holocaust. I recommend it for anyone with an interest in the subject.

⭐The history put forth in this book is almost incomprehensible. To the average reader it is. The complete exploitation of European Jews by Nazi Germany is shattering. First the complete lack of their autonomy, systematic programs of mental, emotional, and physical abuse. After that came the ghettos with deliberate humiliation, disease, and starvation, and this was throughout occupied Europe, west and east. This book also proves that the Jews did not go like sheep to slaughter. There was resistance in all communities, most often futile but they did resist, not always with a gun, but with their mental and emotional will. An outstanding book and one not easily read but very much worthy of being read. Wonderful writing, it could not have been easy, but pulled off brilliantly. A great book for anyone interested in history. I must ask. How could the world have allowed this horrendous crime to happen? Germany must live with the shame but so do those countries who knew and did nothing.

⭐Very important inforamtion on the holocaust. Told in quite a dry style, but I could still fell the horror creeping out. Important facts and figures are there, and it has a very clear detailing of how such an unthinkable event became first possible, then inevitable. SO many lessons to be learned from this.

⭐This books outlines the step by step procedure that Hitler used to legally disenfranchise the Jews. It did not happen in one day, it was a process. For example,, they were first excluded from holding certain jobs, then that category expanded until Jews had difficulty working at all. If you love America and want to keep our democracy strong, this book will help us recognize the warning signs in order to keep something like that from happening here. Difficult to read about the suffering, but we should all be aware. I am not a Jew, but this is one of the most important books I have ever read in my life.

⭐This book is incredible. I was required to get it as the textbook for my Holocaust course I am taking. We aren’t required to read the whole book but I am reading it straight through.I grew up in a liberal, open-minded place with a large Jewish population, in fact I am also Jewish. I am very serious when I say that every year of my life (from middle school to university) has involved Holocaust education. I have also been to Israel and visited Yad Vashem.Considering the extensive education I have had on the Holocaust, it is always very intriguing to learn more. Frankly, a lot of the specific legislation and speeches discussed in this book were new to me. Dawidowicz does a fantastic job of presenting this difficult material in such a way that it is not a purely academic read.Whether you’re taking a class on the Holocaust, or you simply wish to learn more about the disgusting and despicable events that transpired in Germany and Europe under Nazi rule, I seriously recommend that you buy this.I would actually go as far to say that every person should have this book.B’hatzlacha.

⭐I have been reading a lot about the Holocaust lately and this book is so different than the others. Ms Dawidowicz is to be commended for the research that went into writing this book. If you want to know what went on in each country and their persecution of the Jewish people, then this is the book to read. How an evil mindset ended with the deaths of 6 million and the sacrifices and pain of the survivors, should have never happened.Thank you Ms Dawidowicz for giving me facts.

⭐Of course the content of the book itself is of a ‘challenging nature’. (Which is to ve expected by the title). Book arrived on time in the condition described.

⭐useful for daughter

⭐The best on the topic that I have read. Thoroughly researched, full of information and written in a gripping style..

⭐Was fine but a little more ‘used’ and battered than expected

⭐Deserves to be more widely known – an outstanding history of
