Description
The thrilling young mystery series from internationally bestselling author John Grisham!
In the small city of Strattenburg, there are many lawyers, and though he’s only thirteen years old, Theo Boone thinks he’s one of them. Theo knows every judge, policeman, court clerk—and a lot about the law. He dreams of being a great trial lawyer, of a life in the courtroom.
But Theo finds himself in court much sooner than expected. Because he knows so much—maybe too much—he is suddenly dragged into the middle of a sensational murder trial. A cold-blooded killer is about to go free, and only Theo knows the truth.
The stakes are high, but Theo won’t stop until justice is served.
User’s Reviews
From School Library Journal Grade 6–8— While the ending may be anticlimactic, Grisham brings to his crossover bid the lapidary prose and frank insider’s view of this country’s legal system that makes his adult best sellers so absorbing. Only 13 but already so much a lawyer in his own mind that he keeps an “office” at home and dispenses legal advice to classmates and even adults, Theo finds himself in over his head when he’s told in strict confidence that there’s an eyewitness to a high-profile local murder whose perp is about to walk due to lack of evidence. That witness is an illegal immigrant, and so is understandably afraid of coming forward. What to do? Grisham injects occasional side remarks into the narrative (students in Theo’s school are gender-separated “according to a new policy adopted by the smart people in charge of educating all the children in town,”) and he embroiders Theo’s dilemma with intriguing public and behind-the-scenes looks at courts, lawyers, and the realities of the judicial process. He also sets up the plot to move in ominous directions in future episodes—which partly, at least, compensates for leaving the murder trial unresolved at the end of this one. Expect heavy publicity-driven demand.John Peters, New York Public Library –This text refers to the hardcover edition.

⭐ I first have to say that after finishing this book, I went to look at book 2, which is where I saw that this is a series designed for tweens/teens! LOL…I’m 58 years old and had just finished a 4 book series by Greg Isles that was about 3200+ pages total with a lot of characters! Excellent series, but I needed something less intense to read yet would keep my attention! Grisham is an excellent writer and I have read some of his adult books as well. That being said, I loved this book! Easy read, about 10 characters, and I had to find out how it ended! I almost didn’t star reading book 2 in the 6 books series, but this time of year an easy read is what I needed! If you’re an adult, go ahead and read this series if you want to enjoy reading with little thinking! If you have children who love mysteries and are in Grades 3-7, introduce them to an author for life! I also should add that it was refreshing to read a book without a single word of profanity in it! That just dawned me as I’m typing this! I will read this series about Theo Boone, 13 year old sleuth!
⭐ John Grisham has long been one of my favorite authors, and I’ve read countless books he’s written over the years. I was aware that he had penned a series of books for young readers, revolving around Theodore Boone (a middle school student and young “legal-beagle” son of two lawyers.) I had not, however, read any of them–until recently, when I picked up this book, the first of that series. I was thrilled to learn that, despite its younger intended audience, it didn’t lack any of Grisham’s signature exciting plot twists. The best thing about the book, as I see it, is that it is a perfect way to get a young person who is not too fond of reading, to find out that it is a wonderful pass-time. It contains no off-color content (as Grisham rarely does, anyway), making it perfectly acceptable to even the youngest of readers. It also is quite instructive on so many levels, without ever coming across as “teachy.”The second great thing about it is that it is just as entertaining to any adult as to a young person. I intend to read more installments in the Theodore Boone series myself!
⭐ This is a terrific series for middle schoolers or elementary school kids with an advanced reading level. The content is pretty mature. Theodore Boone, the first book, is about a murder trial and the suspect is a slimy man suspected of killing his wife. But no more violent than most other books in this age group. There is lots of great information about how the court system works and just good common sense and moral decision-making. This main character is wonderful. A role model for how kids should behave today. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series. They are all on my Amazon wish list.
⭐ It’s not as intriguing as I would have liked but it does seem to set the stage for more compelling stories going forward as we are introduced to a lot of characters (many of which don’t serve much purpose to this particular story). As an introductory book for kids to learn the basics of law and the trial by jury process, it explains it well and repeatedly for the young reader to grasp it all. However the trial started J’s a murder trial. There is some alcohol use and mention of drugs. It seems more fitting to classify this as a YA but the character is only 13 – so it’s a borderline book, in my opinion.
⭐ I bought this book for my 10 year old, and we ended up reading it together as a bedtime story. I felt like it was obvious that this book was written from an adult perspective. It distracted me at pats, because I felt like the author didn’t have an authentic 13 year old perspective/thought process. Also, I thought that the book really stereotyped affluent vs poor people to the point it was offensive. This book received lots of really good reviews, so this is just my opinion. I’m glad we read it together so we could discuss the stereotypes. Also, the uncle has a drinking problem, and everyone really looks down on him for it and depicts him as a total failure and looks down on his career.
⭐ I love this Grisham novel written just for young adults. I use it in my tutoring and teaching. The main character is a middle schooler who wants to be a lawyer when he grows into manhood and his career. He already knows much more about the law than most adults. His parents are both lawyers and he hangs around the courthouse and knows all the latest scoop on cases. He happens to discover someone who witnessed a crime and has to decide what to do with this new important evidence.
⭐ Interesting story, woven with facts about courts clear enough for age group to understand. it was a nicely woven and intriguing novel. Kids portrayed had good character and fun with each other. nice models. I’m buying the enxt one for my 11 yr old grandson.
⭐ I don’t think it’s “ethical ” for an author to end a book without a satisfactory ending in which the story is brought to a logical conclusion. This one left the reader hanging without a satisfactory conclusion .
⭐ This title and the fact that it was John Grisham drew me to the book as I love his writing and I have such fond memories of two of my sons and how much they loved the mystery solving child Encyclopedia Brown. My middle son could always solve the mystery long before the end cam while my oldest son was frustrated that he took longer figuring it out. As always Grisham did not disappoint. It is a charming and well written book.
⭐ The premise behind this book really is quite clever. Two highly successful lawyers marry, have a child, and surprise, surprise – the offspring decides he wants to be a lawyer when he grows up! A nice, realistic portrayal of life in a legal household. The good thing about young Master Boone is that he is a very likeable character, both within the confines of the story, and beyond. Readers will like him because of his relative modesty, his insecurities, his faults and his talents. His fellow characters (school friends) like him because he is cool as.His parents, too, are far from perfect, as is the highlight (for me) of the book – Uncle Ike. That dude has SERIOUS ISSUES but we love him just the same. This book is FUN! Even though it is obviously aimed at the younger (teen?) reader, THEODORE BOON is a great introduction to the legal thriller as well as a way of making enquiring young minds think of life after the school years end. John Grisham’s writing style has always been an easy one to pick up; he writes in the common, down to earth way that makes his books a joy to read. This concept is extrapolated for the younger market and it works a treat in this book.Negatively speaking, I think the plot itself is the weak link in this story. Basing the complete book around a murder trial is normally a safe bet, but this case is a little feeble, and a boring one at that. There are, however, hints of suspense scattered throughout the story whenever Theo comes up against Omar Cheepe and I imagine he will have a role to play as we approach the end of the book.I give this book three stars, but in actuality (your Honour) it is more like three and a half.BFN Greggorio!
