⭐Began a collection for granddaughter’s succulents.

⭐This book came from England and may have been published there. Usually books from England are well-made, and this was almost so. It is a hard cover that has good hard cover boards, a quality dust cover and what seems to be fine, acid-free paper (thick stuff, really). But quality hardcovers do not have snipped signatures: this one certainly does. Although this is otherwise a fine critical edition of Tolkien’s famous fairy story essay (even the paragraphs are numbered) containing two manuscript variants, obviously intended for Tolkien and fairy tale literature scholars, the fact that the signatures have been snipped means that it won’t hold up to continual classroom or reference use. The price, though reasonable enough for this volume if the signatures were not snipped, is, in my opinion, too much for a hardcover the pages of which will no doubt fall out with frequent use. I suggest the paperback version: it is less expensive and so can be replaced more frequently.I almost rated this four stars: the volume would certainly be that if used and clean. But clipped signatures mean that only glue on the edge of each page holds it in the book. I’m not a book collector, but a fairy tale and Tolkien scholar, and for a critical edition of “On Fairy Stories,” I expect more. I expect a library-quality volume or nearly so: certainly one that will last through continual use: the thing isn’t meant to look pretty on a shelf or for later resale at a much higher price: I mean to use it in my current and future research. When pages begin falling out of this one, I shall repurchase it as a paperback. Disappointing and/or disheartening quality of production, and needlessly so at that: which cost the book two stars in my rating.

⭐I didn’t know this book existed. I ran across the documentary and the hunt was on for the book. Surprise, in no time Amazon had the bok then there it was at my front door, amazing. The book dealers in the UK did a fantastic job getting this wonderful book to me. Thank you all so much. I’m so happy, job well done and I’m happy reading my now Tolkein – Lewis book.Thank you smooch.Cathy in Temecula, CA

⭐For those that don’t know, this book was Tolkien’s essay that he wrote between The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. Tolkien refutes the idea that had surfaced in his day that fairy stories were only for children by explaining his own theories on mythopoeia, eucatastrophe, the fae, etc. If you’ve read the Lord of the Rings then I recommend reading this book as well.

⭐Tolkien’s original essay is sometimes hard slogging, because of the wealth of knowledge and references that he includes–but this edition provides all the notes and references a reader might want, plus additional commentary to put Tolkien’s essay in context. For any reader who is interested in defining the genre of fantasy, this edition of Tolkien’s work is a must.

⭐Key to understanding imaginative writing in light of Christianity.

⭐Bought as a gift. Any Tolkien fan should love.

⭐Everything by Tolkien is excellent.

⭐I was made aware of this book through the “prancing pony” podcast. The essay by Tolkien on faeries gives a great insight on how he thought about fantasy, reality, imagination, the role of the reader, inspiration / creation vs re-production and moral fiction.I would recommend this as a read in any case, but I must say I “took more from it”, thanks to the podcast that gave some guidance and highlighted key passages and messages of the essay.

⭐Tolkien on Fairy-stories’ is an annotated edition of the famous essay, and a great deal more. The history is traced from the beginnings in a 1939 lecture, through the first print appearance in 1947, to the 1964 ‘Tree and Leaf’ version and beyond. Copious manuscript drafts are linked by a highly informative connecting narrative. Some surprising sources are identified, among them an inspiration for “sub-creation” in the writings of Miss Maisie Ward.Even more interesting, and surely new to many, is the way the development of ‘On Fairy-Stories’ interleaves with that of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ itself. Two key ideas prove to have been added during a mid-War hiatus in the composition of the latter: the definitive concept of Fantasy with its all-important “inner consistency”, and the “Elvish craft” of Enchantment. This aspect, above all, makes ‘Tolkien on Fairy-stories’ an essential resource in studying the ideas so magnificently embodied. The editors deserve our thanks for the very thorough and competent job they have done in making these materials available.

⭐Book is awesome, but was frustrated that the second hand copy I bought had lines literally THROUGH the text.

⭐A very interesting and insightful read on ‘fairy-stories’. Nice quality book too.

⭐Il volume è senza dubbio un must have per chi vuole studiare Tolkien.
