User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I like Stephen Fry’s wry wit and his polymath’s intelligence. The book does a good job of retelling the background and story of the Trojan War, ranging widely to cover side-issues and backstories. Fry doesn’t hesitate to add his updated, sardonic commentary, making fun of some of the characters and events from a modern perspective. This does get a wee bit intrusive. But the tone and style of the book pretty much shows that it is intended for a younger audience. And I think also for a more educated audience, a British audience in fact. I’m afraid that the United States does not have all that many middle- and high-schoolers who have a background in Greek mythology and literature, and Fry does expect the readers to have some familiarity with these fields.Still, this reviewer tends to think there are no children’s books and no adult’s books, but only books. A good book should be interesting for any age of reader, and this is a good one.
⭐Of course I had to buy all three books, they are without a doubt treasures. You really feel as if you’re there as the events take place.
⭐Mr. Fry did a brilliant job (of course). I would happily read more of his mythology books if he is so inclined to continue the series. However!! The dust jackets for Mythos and Heroes were both lovely, shiny metallic and it really bothers me that Troy doesn’t match the design. The finish is more matte, and the design under “Chronicle Books” doesn’t line up. It drives me crazy. If you release it again someday, please adjust!
⭐Mr. Fry has cleared the deck of all extraneous materials and story lines. Excellent source for further explorations. Thank you!
⭐After loving the first two books in this trilogy I was very excited to read Stephen Fry’s take on the Trojan War and, as I have come to expect from him, it was very clear, chronological, and a little bit cheeky in its retelling. Stephen Fry has done a tremendous job in delving into these myths and characters and explaining to the modern reader just what exactly is going on, while poking fun at the repeating parables found in greek myth. If you are interested in Greek myths but are not sure where to start, I would highly recommend this book and the others in the series.
⭐This book does a great job explaining the Trojan War in a modern voice. It’s written with a wonderful sense of humor.
⭐A worthy continuation of the work Fry began in Mythos and Heroes. I can hardly wait for his take on the Odyssey! Troy makes that ancient time come alive with wit, understanding and brilliance.
⭐Unfortunately I have also read The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker, which means that there was a sense of repetition over the life of Achilles and what happened at Troy. That said, nobody writes like Stephen Fry, the appendix at the end a massive work in and of itself. He is also generous to the reader, urging you to not become bogged down with these names, which really do form a large chunk of the prose. Admitting honestly that there is a great deal of the unknown, mystery about what happened, it takes a creative mind like his, to bring it all to life. I rather regret visiting the location of it all before reading this.
⭐I was waiting for this book ever since I finished Heroes, the second book in the series. Troy is my favourite subject to read about since it is full of great myths, stories, heroes, villains, sorrow, pain, lust and love. I knew Stephen Fry would do a great job at retelling the greatest story of all times. And he did a brilliant job! This book goes back to the beginning of Troy and takes us on a journey from there to the end, the end of Troy, the end of honour and the end of a great era. We get to know Hector, Achilles, their parents, Paris, Helen and where they came from and how the Olympians interfered with their lives. I am still shocked how the destiny and fate shaped the fall of Troy from such an early stage. This book is not a heavy read. It is very enjoyable, but you still learn a lot more about Troy. I was laughing, feeling sad, annoyed, angry and happy at the same time whilst reading this. I feel lucky and blessed to have read Stephen Fry’s retelling of the greatest story of all times. I hope he will continue retelling the Greek myths and other historical events, because his style is funny, informative and respectful. He never tries to interpret the story, never tries to shape it into something else and the retelling never feels pretentious at any point. This was brilliant. I bought it the day it was published and finished it in three sittings. I love Stephen Fry and cannot recommend this book enough. 5 GOLDEN STARS!
⭐Just got my book on launching date and this is how it came like. Disappointed that it’s not like the other Mythos and Heroes editions with dust cover and better made. I can get books in better conditions in my local charity shop. Do not recommend.
⭐I’m so upset – I’ve just opened my parcel and my book is damaged. The corners are ruined and there’s a large scratch/scrape mark across the back cover.
⭐Delivered in a poor condition. Book was damaged and without the protective sleeve that the previous two books had. Review not based on the content but on the quality of the book received. Pretty disappointed as I have waited for this book since it was announced. Hope the next one I receive is better.
⭐Cover faded and worn and the packaging was open? Surely there should be a slip cover this seems to be a publisher fault. Contacted Amazon customer services refunded payment, i will order another mint copy when the issues are sorted out.Amazon said that they had a lot of complaints re this but happy with the refund.Ps I am sure that the book itself is absolutely excellent Stephen Fry has absolutely nailed these books.. Bravo Stephen
