Description

In this first annotated edition of F. R. Leavis’ famous critique of C. P. Snow’s influential argument about ‘the two cultures’, Stefan Collini reappraises both its literary tactics and its purpose as cultural criticism. The edition will enable new generations of readers to understand what was at stake in the dispute and to appreciate the enduring relevance of Leavis’s attack on the goal of economic growth. In his comprehensive introduction Collini situates Leavis’s critique within the wider context of debates about ‘modernity’ and ‘prosperity’, not just the ‘two cultures’ of literature and science. Collini emphasizes the difficulties faced by the cultural critic in challenging widely-held views and offers an illuminating analysis of Leavis’s style. The edition provides full notes to references and allusions in Leavis’s texts.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Devastating, maligned, invaluable. So are you weary of never ending cant promoting careerism as the purpose of education, are you depressed by the commonplace privileging of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines over literature, history, philosophy and the arts, well then, Leavis’s take on C. P. Snow and the Two Cultures could be the bracing tonic you need to invigorate your spirits. Leavis makes his argument against the C. P. Snow position, which has become so ubiquitous that it’s pretty much taken as a given, with great acumen and tremendous ferocity. He shreds its. Now of course, the course of history in the west was running in Snow’s direction, and Snow’s message was one the promoters of banal economic progress liked, so Leavis was widely criticized for his attack on that decent chap Snow, who was only presenting what people needed to know: that scientific understanding should be privileged for the general good.Read this work and you will immerse yourself in another era and in a stunning argument. Granted Leavis’s prose style isn’t designed for easy absorption. This is not a book for when you are feeling dozy and you want something soothing, easy-prosy. It’s more like strong coffee. It is also a work you can read again and again–when you want to be reinvigorated by a strong, illuminating argument supporting the study of literature as a fundamentally important discipline of thought.KP-RI

⭐People should know the work of Leavis–a REAL critic.

⭐Satisfying purchase!

Snow’s “The Two Cultures” gehalten hat (separat erhältlich vom selben Verlag mit ähnlichem Cover).
