Description

By questioning the validity of some of our basic concepts, such as space, object, and causality, quantum physics contributes quite decisively to the dramatic changes now taking place in our world picture. This book is addressed not only to physicists at an early stage in their careers (the first or second year graduate student) but also to philosophers, as well as to all the senior physicists interested in the interpretation problem. Beginning with a chapter that could be described as ?philosophy for physicists,? it presents an in-depth analysis of present-day quantum mechanical concepts, an analysis of physicists and philosophers alike. Specifically, it first offers an extensive critical analysis of such topics as the Einstein, Podolsky, Rosen reality criterion, nonseparatability, the quantum measurement riddle, decoherence theory, consistent histories approaches and ontologically interpretable theories. All this then naturally leads to philosophical questions concerning, in particular, intersubjective agreement and the limit of realism. And a thorough examination of this whole material finally leads to the view that distinguishing between empirical reality and a veiled man-independent reality yields an acceptable answer to the perplexing question of how to interpret quantum physics. Veiled Reality offers nonspecialists, including students in physics, philosophy and the history of science, an accessible perspective on basic problems in the foundations of physics.

Editorial Reviews: About the Author Bernard D’espagnat

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐If you examine this book edition, you could easly see that in most of the pages the letter i (minuscule) lacks the point on it, this fact makes the sentences difficult to read because this truncated or incomplete letter jointly with many consonants makes the words in which it appears confusing and difficult to read, you should avoid selling and delivering this book edition to customers who payed their money for this trash.

⭐Be aware that this is more like a bad photocopy. Some mathematical symbols are missing from formulas. Dots of i are also frequently missing. The book is definitely overpriced for the low quality one gets. However, this was the only source I could find to obtain the book.

⭐Modern physics has transformed the assumptions and worldviews of scholars and lay observers alike. Many attempts to comprehend these innovations, from Fritjof Capra to David Bohm to David Deutsch, have been thoughtful and insightful. However, frequently philosophical interpretations (including Bohm’s) have been overly speculative, while those grounded in physics often lack a sense of the larger whole. Ultimately, a serious attempt to understand the impact of modern theoretical physics requires rigor in both physics and philosophy. This is what d’Espagnat uniquely provides. Slowly, thoughtfully and in great depth, he carefully assesses the credibility of both alternative physical theories as well as their implications for the correlative philosophy. This summary is only a generality, of course, but Veiled Reality provides such depth that no brief review can do the book justice. d’Espagnat concludes that science now knocks at the door of metaphysics to bring it fresh information (p. 416). He provides the prerequisites needed to create a perspective prepared to appreciate the broader insights that science can now provide. Within this line of intellectual exploration, there is no book I would recommend more enthusiastically.
