⭐This is great book, best intervews with historians ever. The one with David Montgomery is classic. Incredibly well thought out and organized; especially the choce of historians to be interviewed. It is a must for any and all historians, especially progressve ones.
⭐It is unfortunate that the collection “Visions of History” is out of print, since this is an interesting work of historiography. The editors Abelove, Blackmar, Dimock and Schneer gathered together, on behalf of the then radical historians’ society MARHO, a series of interviews with prominent radical and/or Marxist historians asking them about their politics, their work, and their views on historiography and the future of radical history. The full list of authors includes some major Marxist historians (E.P. Thompson, Eric Hobsbawm, Moshe Lewin, C.L.R. James), radical women’s historians (Sheila Rowbotham, Linda Gordon), black historians (David Mongomery, Vincent Harding) and some other virtuosi of radical history (Natalie Zemon Davis, W.A. Williams, John Womack, Staughton Lynd). Not every interview is equally interesting – James unfortunately gives little away but general political statements – but most of them are very readable and engaging, and it is rare to see such a systematic work engaged with different views on historiography from a radical perspective.Although the book was published in 1983 and most of the interviews are from around 1980, it is not that dated or obsolete, as most of the questions concern topics like the relation between Marxist political commitment and the personal trajectory of life, the problems of writing radical history in times of a swing to the political right, the relation between class and culture in history, etc. Only in small things can one see how the change of time has affected it, such as Genovese still being cited as a major Marxist inspiration by several authors. The effects of politics on the field itself, in particular McCarthyism, are not ignored and the way many of the authors describe the difficulties they have had in terms of career as a result of their commitments is an important eye-opener. The questions, mainly asked by colleagues in the field or graduate students, are also good and to the point and lead to interesting answers. Definitely worth reading if one has an interest in radical history, and one can find a copy.
