Description

“Proof” has been and remains one of the concepts which characterises mathematics. Covering basic propositional and predicate logic as well as discussing axiom systems and formal proofs, the book seeks to explain what mathematicians understand by proofs and how they are communicated. The authors explore the principle techniques of direct and indirect proof including induction, existence and uniqueness proofs, proof by contradiction, constructive and non-constructive proofs, etc. Many examples from analysis and modern algebra are included. The exceptionally clear style and presentation ensures that the book will be useful and enjoyable to those studying and interested in the notion of mathematical “proof.”

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This book is the best I’ve read on this subject. At page 2 it promises under a cartoon:”Proofs dissected, examined and their structure revealed”This sentence exactly describes the books content. You’ll find a lucid explanation without any shortcoming. This is the math that masters keep as secret of their kingdom. This book reveals all secrets and you’ll see, masters are also humans like you. You’ll understand what the real power of mathematical proofs (without mythes). Further you’ll hold a view about the structure of mathematical theories, and their axiomatic base.Unlike some tedious math books, this one is decorated with cartoons. All vital subject packed in summary tables as quick references. The authors explain a complicated subject in lucid english so successfully even non-native speakers of english understand the subject in details.Take this and enjoy oneself

⭐I first came across this book while searching for similar titles in a university library. Of all of the books on mathematical logic/proofs, this one stands as the definitive source for proof techniques of all skill levels. This book is easy to read, while at the same time, presents the methods in a systematic way to help the reader’s conceptual understanding and develop their full potential. I am a mathematics major and this book has helped me tremendously and I am sure it will do the same for others!
