Description

Stay-at-home mom Sarah Johnson has the perfect family—a handsome, hardworking husband and two healthy and beautiful children. At least, that’s what she’s been telling herself for years. After the tragedies in her youth, Sarah deemed living a lie easier than dwelling on the past and facing her everyday failures. To avoid any kind of confrontation at home she doesn’t read her husband’s emails or spy on him like most jealous wives do. She wouldn’t jeopardize her comfortable but dull life for anything.

But Sarah’s world is about to crumble around her when she receives a phone call from a man with a heavy foreign accent telling her that her perfect husband has put a price on her head. She is offered two weeks to come up with a counteroffer or die. Why would her model husband Mike want her dead? Hasn’t she been the perfect wife? Or has her karma finally caught up with her—making her pay for her former transgressions? The final countdown begins and now Sarah has to race against time to find out what went wrong in her marriage and find a way out of this nightmare.

So the game of life or death begins. Secrets are unveiled. Emotions are unleashed. Actions are taken.

Will there be a winner in this dangerous game when no one can escape the twist of fate?
14 Days to Die is a suburban suspense mystery novel with psychological thriller elements about the failed marriage of a stay-at-home mom and a firefighter set in California. It’s a dark and disturbing story of secrets and lies, cheating, and greed. The more we try to hold onto broken things, the more we break ourselves.

Here is what readers are saying

“This may be called 14 DAYS TO DIE but it only took me 1 and 1/2 days to read it. I was hooked from beginning to end….I have read lots of thrillers from each type from psychological to mystery, from the daft to the sublime, and this one is written in a fantastic way that keeps the pace up and keeps you alert at all times. I am going to say: This really needs picking up by some film company I would love to see this played out visually.” Sue and her Books

“Whoa…I was not prepared for this. This is a gripping thriller full of twists and turns….We see all these pretty suburban homes and we don’t really know what happens inside. Sarah and Mike seem to have a happy, stable life: The American suburban dream. Only, they don’t.” Michelle Only Wants to Read

“14 Days to Die is very entertaining, and I read in one sitting. I felt sorry for Sarah but also laughed at her. Her life is of a typical housewife struggling day to day to keep house, husband and children happy whilst also fighting against the ravages of age that time does to a woman.” Tracy Shephard

“Talk about a fantastic plot and premise for a thriller! Not only was this one fast paced, it had exceptional character development in a short book. I could feel my heart beating faster with each call she got reminding her of the impending doom hanging over her head….This book was thrilling with a side of romance that I could stomach. Overall a fantastic read that I highly recommend!” Chelsea Humphrey

“I’m pretty hard to please when it comes to psych thrillers (probably because I read so many of them), so I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this one.” Kelly and the Book Boar

“…a debut psychological gripping thriller with many twists and turns that keeps you guessing until the very last page. And I never guessed the brilliant ending! I loved this book!…After reading this book, you will now look at your husband and other people in your life in a new light. What comes around goes around!” Sue, Netgalley Reviewer

I think Gillian Flynn may have to move over to make room for Ms. Whelan.” –Vicky (★★★★★Goodreads Review) “From lies and betrayals to jealousy and adultery, this book has it all and then some. It made me gasp, made me angry, sad, and even laugh as I rooted for the underdog. It was a modern day War of The Roses crossed with Mr and Mrs Smith!” –Joanne (★★★★ Netgalley Review)

⭐ Not a psycho thriller. Little psycho, not much thriller. In this 1st POV present novel, the meat of the writing is internal dialogue and narration to convey the motivation of a bitter, bitter wife. Sarah’s life revolves around her children. Mike, her husband, has gone off the rails crazy for another woman, which leads to escalating conflict to push the story. Most of which comes out in her mind. A hitman enters the scene as does a neighborhood Casanova. (Good stuff) Sarah hatches an underhanded plan to fix it all, save the future of her children, and salvage her self esteem. The writing moves quickly, nice creative story line. Only issue is too much filler. Of the 280 pages, about 100 were overdone with why she had built up her resentment for her husband, where she shopped, laundry, kids management, bitterness for her body getting old, etc, etc. All the extra “stuff” just slowed the story down to a grind instead of increasing in emotion and suspense as it moved to conclusion. The ending! It felt like the story just stopped with a whimper, like the author just got tired of writing the story. The elements in the epilogue tied up the loose ends and shed light on what the heck had happened. It would have improved the story tremendously if the epilogue beats would have been introduced into the scene structure in Act III.Good story. But typos, adverb-heavy, word inflation, could have been cleaned up with the touch of a good editor.

⭐ I have definitely found a new author. I can’t get over how good her books are. The way they grip you. The way she makes you feel for the characters and share in their emotions. I’m drawn to read on.Sarah is a SAHM. She believes she has a good life. Nice home, great kids, and a loving husband. That all changes with a phone call from a man telling her he has been hired by her husband to kill her. Turns out her husband is having an affair and she has 14 days to pay him double or die. Sarah must fund a way to live for her children. Who can she trust? Where can she turn for help? This book will keep you reading desperately wanting to know the outcome.

⭐ Wow! This book was some fast ride! I read it all in one sitting. A really unusual book.Sarah thinks she and her husband, Mike, are happily married. Sure, their sex life has slowed down and they argue about money, but, all in all, she thinks they are happy. Until the hit man who Mike hired to kill her calls her with a proposition. He will not follow through if she pays him double what Mike was going to pay him. She has 14 days to come up with the money. He calls often to count down the days. Sarah cooks, cleans, and takes care of their two children, while investigating her husband and finding out he is cheating on her and his girlfriend is pregnant. Then she cooks and cleans some more, while she plots how to kill her husband.I loved this book. I couldn’t read it fast enough. There are times when I laughed out loud and times I felt so bad for Sarah. I am going to look for more from this author. She has a very inventive imagination. Get the book. I highly recommend it.

⭐ At first it was a promising book but about half way thorough it got ridiculous. ***spoiler alert***Once she knew it was her husband’s girlfriend’s brother who was threatening her and she found the changed life insurance policy she should have gone straight to the police. She had messages on her phone, etc… The police would have easily seen his pregnant girlfriend and known something was up. Then in the end she all of the sudden is seriously ill out of left field! I read until the end hoping the book was salvaged somehow but it wasn’t.

⭐ This book only took me less than two days to finish. What I liked most about this book is the author kept it real. I totally could see myself in this character and her thought process. How is viewed herself, how she viewed others. I loved how she didn’t want to get out of the car at her children’s school when she wasn’t made up, here I thought I only thought like that. Lol. The wad Sarah’s life seemed to go from one situation to the next seemed so real so believable, how things just happened to her one second things are one way and the next she’s stuck in the bathroom with her hot neighbor…I can totally see how this happens. There are a few things that I made me wonder how there wasn’t enough noise to alarm someone or her husband, referring to the garage part. But than again her husband was a big pig ..keeping it PG here. Lol. So it makes sense.Throughout this book I could see how Sarah would decide things she did, to some it may not makes sense. .but to me it seemed right.A.B. Whelan has a way to suck you in this story as if you are living it. I found myself getting so angry at Sarah’s husband and all the things I wanted to do to him, then the next I read Sarah was thinking the same. It was perfect. The ending was sad, but I understood it. And I reallycan’t think of a better way to end the book. It’s not a fairly tale people. Lol.I will looking forward to her upcoming books and I will be reading her past books too!!!!

⭐ I rarely give a book five stars, and this one wasn’t really perfect, but it kept me engrossed for two days! It’s a cliche but I “really didn’t want to put it down!” It was such a fun read, as a stay at home Mom I could totally identify with Sarah. Her plotting and scheming seemed so realistic, and her path to the final days, kept me on the edge of my seat. I hope she writes another thriller soon, as she seems to have a knack for putting you in the heat of the action, along with the central character.. I think I would have changed the ending a bit, and clarified it more, but all in all it was very well done. Bravo, Ms Whelan!

⭐ This was a thoroughly enjoyable thriller. It is the tale of a 10-year marriage going badly wrong because of infidelity and lies. The main character of Sarah is likeable and pitiful at the same time. It is written in both the present and future and I especially loved reading the interviews conducted by the police of people who “knew” the main couple.I also, unlike many books touted as psychological thrillers, found the ending realistic and plausible. The pace was fast and emphasised that when you spin a web of lies or live without thinking about the consequences of your actions, everyone pays a price. 4 and a half stars.

⭐ This book sure lives up to the description of Psychological Thriller! (You can read the synopsis on Amazon)It was a page turner from beginning to end! And despite the dark premise, it did have some darkly humorous moments. And lots of unexpected moments. LOTS!At times, you have to suspend belief because it was difficult for me to believe that Sarah could think and act rationally whenshe knew her death was days away. But I read for escape and enjoyment and I don’t need logic etc. in order to enjoy a good thriller. And this fit the bill! Read it in a few hours. And I would have never in a million years figured out how it would end! WOW!!!!Great Thriller Book Debut for Miss Whelan!

⭐ First, I want to say that the reviews that talked about the surprise ending…… Well, it was pretty apparent to me about a third of the way through what the outcome was going to be. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but throwing in some decoy suspects didn’t really do anything for me.Even with that, I was planning to give this book 4 stars until the last few chapters. We hit the climax and then none of the remaining open storylines got resolved. Interestingly, at the same point in the book, the spelling and grammar got very sloppy, so maybe there is some author fatigue.Anyway, I went ahead and finished it (I think…. He ending was VERY abrupt) but, if there’s a sequel, count me out.

⭐ A phone call from the would-be human demands double the fifty thousand dollar payment her husband paid to kill her if she cares to live. She plots how to do away with her husband first in the two weeks the human has given her to get the money. Can she find a way to collect on the insurance policy and give her and her children a chance at a new life?
