⭐This is the first (and, as of yet, the only) English translation of Karl Marx’s mathematic manuscripts. This book presents Marx’s solutions to certain problems regarding differential calculus. It was during his latter years, often when bed-bound due to illness, that Marx worked on developing his understanding of maths. These manuscripts date from c.1881. He engages in an analysis of the weaknesses present in the foundations of calculus, seeking to demystify this branch of mathematics.We’re presented with two complete drafts on the history of differential calculus, and two finished pieces of work: ‘On the Concept of the Derived Function’, and ‘On the Differential’. In addition, there are some supplementary texts and an unfinished thesis on Taylor’s theorem. Marx’s work is complemented with a lengthy introduction – which explore his thoughts on mathematics, and the value of his contributions.In and of itself, this book is interesting to those fascinated by either (a) the history of mathematics, or (b) developments in Marx’s thought. It does present some sophisticated mathematics – and you’ll likely not understand the contents unless you’ve studied calculus at degree level.Note: I bought a copy (‘as new’) for under £20. Some sellers charge ridiculous prices … it’s simply not worth paying more than about £25 on this (especially as the entire contents can be readily found online).
