Description
Few writers are as integrally bound to a place as Pablo Neruda was to the landscape of Isla Negra on Chile’s coast. From his arrival there in the late 1930s to his death in 1973, Neruda captured Isla Negra in images fundamental to an understanding of his work. It was, according to Martin Espada, at Isla Negra where Neruda “in the company of his muse, walked alongside the source of his most lyrical inspiration, the sea…and discovered a new way of seeing, as the ocean became a living metaphor for the infinite riches of the world.” The poems, selected from three volumes of Neruda’s work, are presented with photographs of Neruda and his house in an attractive gift format. Nobel Prize-winning poet Pablo Neruda, who died in 1973, remains one of the most influential voices in world literature.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I just purchased this book of poetry. Wonderful stuff! Exquisite translation. Why is it no longer available? I keep this in the same place as my collection of Elliot poems. But these are warmer, deeply personal reflections of a life. It is like walking through a man’s memories while he tells you what each one meant to him.
⭐Imagine Pablo Neruda as your Spanish language instructor. Yummy.–This volume presents his beautiful poetry in both English and Spanish. If you only know English –What a way to learn Spanish! If you know both the truth of the poems becomes more complex as it resonantes in both languages.
⭐When I want a reminder that life can be full of love, wonder and feeling, I open one of Neruda’s books. This one is a beautiful example of this important poet’s work and it’s great to know I have it with me on my e-reader.
⭐This is a great collection. It has many of my beloved favorites and many I have yet to read. A must for any Neruda fan, or anyone else looking for a good read. You can’t go wrong with this book.
⭐Neruda’s works never cease to impress but this particular set of poems are far too contextualized (as understandable from the title of course) but some of the poems will still strike a chord with Neruda fans. For me, I have read better from Neruda. Enjoy! 🙂
⭐It’s a book by Neruda of course it’s good I can’t believe I’m writing a review good translations it seems I don’t know they won an award.
⭐Isla Negra is a poetic autobiography that takes an intriguing look into the observations of Pablo Neruda while living in a small village on the coast of central Chile. The layout of the book is unique to anything I have ever read, although it is a refreshing change of pace and very easy to read in a couple of reading sessions. While the book has been translated from its original language, each poem remains easy to understand and accurate to what Neruda meant in Spanish. The majority of the poems are about observations and thoughts that Neruda had while living on Isla Negra. Neruda uses elements of nature and various types of living things to symbolize the interconnectedness that is shared between mankind and the environment. While I found that it is easy to read the poems and highlight dominant symbols, I sometimes felt like I had not completely uncovered what Neruda was trying to convey symbolically. However, I took my lack of understanding as room to interpret the symbols and apply them to the big picture connection that they shared with the system of life. This book is a good reminder to stop and observe the various aspects of the environment. I feel that in today’s it it increasingly easy to loose connection with the natural world and forget that humans are one of many living things. After realizing how small we are in comparison to the forces of nature, it is easy to gain an understanding that it is essential to respect these forces. I also liked how easy it was to relate themes from the book to my own life. While I never have lived near the ocean, I did grow up in the mountains, which is also a force of nature that requires the utmost respect. Also, being in the mountains does an excellent job at making humans feel small. I also liked the idea of how stone serves as a remainder that at some level every living thing on earth shares an ecological connection with nature. Overall, I thought that this book was a creative and beautiful approach at summarizing the observations and thoughts of Pablo Neruda while he lived in Isla Negra. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning about an insightful and talented writer, or to anyone who is wants to read about the human connection with the environment.
⭐there are not enough words for this book. enticing and mesmerizing, Neruda remains to me one of the greatest lovers of life. An acute observer of surroundings, a revolutionary, a lover, a man of the world and of the senses. this book is a whirlwind of poetical autobiographical moments and what a wonder it is. recommended to be read quietly and in an atmosphere undisturbed.a masterpiece.
⭐This is a great collection. A must have for any lover of Neruda, for any lover of just being and seeing. But o so deeply.
