Description
A best-selling volume of Pablo Neruda’s poetry in an English-Spanish edition.Pablo Neruda is one of the world’s most popular poets, and in The Book of Questions, Neruda refuses to be corralled by the rational mind. Composed of 316 unanswerable questions, these poems integrate the wonder of a child with the experiences of an adult. By turns Orphic, comic, surreal, and poignant, Neruda’s questions lead the reader beyond reason into realms of intuition and pure imagination. This complete translation of Pablo Neruda’s El libro de las preguntas (The Book of Questions) features Neruda’s original Spanish-language poems alongside William O’Daly’s English translations. In his introduction O’Daly, who has translated eight volumes of Pablo Neruda’s poetry, writes, “These poems, more so than any of Neruda’s other work, remind us that living in a state of visionary surrender to the elemental questions, free of the quiet desperation of clinging too tightly to answers, may be our greatest act of faith.”When Neruda died in 1973, The Book of Questions was one of eight unpublished poetry manuscripts that lay on his desk. In it, Neruda achieves a deeper vulnerability and vision than in his earlier work-and this unique book is a testament to everything that made Neruda an artist.”Neruda’s questions evoke pictures that make sense on a visual level before the reader can grasp them on a literal one. The effect is mildly dazzling [and] O’Daly’s translations achieve a tone that is both meditative and spontaneous.” –Publishers WeeklyPablo Neruda, born in southern Chile, led a life charged with poetic and political activity. He was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, the International Peace Prize, and served as Chile’s ambassador to several countries, including Burma, France, and Argentina. He died in 1973.II.Tell me, is the rose naked or is that her only dress? Why do trees conceal the splendor of their roots?Who hears the regrets of the thieving automobile? Is there anything in the world sadder than a train standing in the rain?XIV.And what did the rubies say standing before the juice of pomegranates? Why doesn’t Thursday talk itself into coming after Friday?Who shouted with gleewhen the color blue was born? Why does the earth grievewhen the violets appear?

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I bought this as a similiar purchase to his 100 Love Sonnets. I read over the description and examples that described this poetry along the lines of.. Questions of the world around him [us] as observations of the world through the eyes of a child, but from the mind of adult. There is no better way to describe this, honestly. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading this! I read excerpts to my boyfriend and captivated his attention/curiousity as well, which is quiet hard to do.
⭐Great collection of koan-like poems by the great and much-loved Pablo Neruda. Some will make you think, others will make you smile, and still others will touch you deeply.
⭐This book has such beautiful poetry. I love Neruda.I find that anyone can enjoy this collection because it offers opportunity for all kinds of interpretations.Love that it has both Spanish and English on its pages.
⭐it’s a simple book but it honestly made me think so much. some of them took me back to being a kid while some made me think about the future and even other people. i’m fluent in spanish and found the translations to be very accurate. i’m really happy with this purchase
⭐I bought this book for my kid but actually I really like it. It’s so fun and I feel like having conversations with a great scholar…. Absolutely recommend everyone who is seeking for trivial but important thing.
⭐If you love poetry or even if you don’t, it is always great to read Pablo Neruda.
⭐An attractive volume of Neruda’s verse
⭐Thanks!
⭐One of his last manuscripts published posthumously. Enigmatic, humble, multi-faced poems as questions and best of all parallel text with the Spanish and lively translation. Beautifully produced book too.
⭐A brilliant mixture of philosophical thoughts and fantasy. Every page provides some element of delight as it causes your mind to consider the world from a different angle and perspective. All of this and it is a translated work! How I wish I could read it as it was originally composed! I honestly think any person will find inside these covers a couplet which stops them in their metaphysical tracks and makes them go. ‘I wonder…’ How can you put a price on something like that? This kind of artistic brilliance definately represents some of humanities best features. Think I better stop now or people will think I’m winding them up!
⭐I had seen an extract in something I was doing and this made me buy it – and it was good if not better than I had hoped for. Just a lovely source of simple reading with thought-provoking gems.
⭐I mean, absolutely always, but this one is one for the fans. It is not Neruda’s selection (or Neruda’s title). Not one to start with; get the Odes first.
⭐This is such a lovely book, meant to be looked at, read and appreciated everyday! It makes the perfect gift!
