Description
Larry Boyd just found the coolest thing in the trash. It’s an old bottle of INSTA-TAN. “Rub on a dark suntan in minute” – that’s what the label says. So Larry and his friends do. But nothing much happens.
Until Larry notices the hair. Dark spiky hair growing on his hands and face. Really gross shiny hair.
Hair that keeps growing back even after he shaves it off…

⭐ After the fun R.L. Stine clearly had creating believable, funny adventures around believable, funny kids in Phantom of the Auditorium and Attack of the Mutant, My Hairiest Adventure feels as run-of-the-mill and shallow as the title suggests. It’s not a bad yarn by any means — it’s just…uninteresting. ‘Hairy’ Larry, our protagonist, is uninteresting. His friends and their band are uninteresting. The antagonists, a rival band, are uninteresting. The light-hearted mystery around Larry growing thick, black, greasy hair in unusual places is — you guessed it — uninteresting.Stine’s usual stories are surface-level spooks and jokes meant to connect with kids and keep them turning the pages — this, however, may deserve some credit for branching out a bit to craft a metaphor around puberty and the awful, awful changes that brings. Maybe. It’s a decent, silly story to pass the time, but there are so many better Goosebumps adventures to pick from, whether you want spooky horror (Ghost Beach), or you’re more craving R.L. Stine’s silly sense of humor (Go Eat Worms!). The problems lie not just in how boring the entire concept is, but that the ending is telegraphed a bit too obviously early on with the neighborhood dogs, and Larry’s fixation on a can of tanning lotion is too obviously a red herring. Not one of the better Goosebumps entries, and likely out of print for a reason.(I still loved it….)## “Do you think the stuff works?” Jared asked, adjusting his cap and staring at the bottle.## “It has to,” Lily said. “They couldn’t sell it if it didn’t work.”
⭐ Arrived quickly and as described
⭐ Although I’m young, I’m a long-time Goosebumps fan. I didn’t like this one as much as the other Goosebumps TV books because the ending disappointed me. It also wasn’t quite as scary as the other books. Overall it was OK but not the best of the TV Goosebump books.
⭐ Thanks
⭐ Great quality and quick delivery
⭐ “My Hairiest Adventure” is about Larry who used a bottle of tanning lotion on his hands and hair starts to grow. One of his friends disappears, then he sees a dog with eyes that are 2 different colors, just like his missing friends. When he finally tells his parents, they explain that they couldn’t have children, like many of the other people in the community, so their doctor developed a potion that he injected into dogs to turn them into kids. Now, Larry’s immune system is fighting the potion and he is going to turn back into a dog, like his friends.I was addicted to these books when I was younger and it wasn’t until I was majoring in education in college that I figured out why. They were interesting with bizarre plot twists that most 9-12 year olds don’t think about and they were short (usually between 110-130 pages). I could read the whole thing in a day.My parents also didn’t have a lot of heartache with buying me a new book because these are relatively inexpensive (in the neighborhood of 3-5 bucks each).R.L. Stine’s “Goosebumps” books aren’t scary, just kind of creepy. There aren’t graphic descriptions of murder and mayhem. Just some ghosts, werewolves, or potions. The main character is alive in the end, and the final chapter resolves everything.**Keep in mind, R.L. Stine has other books that aren’t in the “Goosebumps” series that tend to be a little harsher when it comes to hauntings and plot. They are written more for the 12-14 age group and are longer (around 150-200 pages).
⭐ I think R.L. Stine is my favorite author of all time.I like all of his books but my favorite one is My Hairiest Adventure. It’s about a kid named Larry Boyd and a couple of his friends walking home from band practice when Larry digs through a dumpster. Digusting, right? He found a bottle called INSTA-TAN with a label that says,”Rub on and get a dark tan in a minute.” He tried putting it on but nothing happened, until the next morning. When you read it, you might have nightmares if you don’t under stand it. Read it, and you’ll like it.~Cheesy
⭐ It ain’t instant tan dude! R.L.’s twist on I was a teenage … something HAIRY anyway… my favorite ending I think of the GB books. These 80’s classic kid tributes to the horror pulp genre never get old… the twist endings, 1st person protagonist have roots as far back as H.P.Lovecraft & E.C. Comics Vault / Crypt titles. The series numbering is now gone but the classics continue to live on (or unlive as the case may be).
⭐ Larry and his friends find and try a bottle of something called Insta-Tan. Soon after course dark hair starts growing on his hands. What was in that bottle? One day his friend Manny doesn’t show up for school nor band practice, and his house is empty. Has he moved? Why didn’t he tell them? This is a good story, with two mysteries going on.
⭐ This book really kept me interested. However, it wasn’t as scary as many of the other Goosebumps books. The ending is a real kicker; though seems kind of a cop out, it does tie things together nicely. Overall, just an average book that nonetheless is fun to read.
