Description
First published in 1903, Principles of Mathematics was Bertrand Russell’s first major work in print. It was this title which saw him begin his ascent towards eminence. In this groundbreaking and important work, Bertrand Russell argues that mathematics and logic are, in fact, identical and what is commonly called mathematics is simply later deductions from logical premises. Highly influential and engaging, this important work led to Russell’s dominance of analytical logic on western philosophy in the twentieth century.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐There is a lot wrong with this: the OCR has been bad, and particularly ligatures are often badly scanned. The formulas are often missing a few letters. Even the text is missing a lot of letters, or there are superfluous spaces. The Preface is missing entirely.Worst of all, this is not the Principia Mathematica, Vol I by Russel and Whitehead (1910), this is the “Principles of Mathematics” by Russel (1903). It’s a completely different book.I only paid a buck, so I really don’t want to go through the hassle of returning it, but honestly – terrible quality digital edition of a classic book.
⭐I think Principles of Mathematics is one of the finest works on the subject out there, however, before I came across the Merchant Books version I was unable to read it. The Norton version has print so ridiculously small it strained my eyes beyond belief. The Merchant Books edition is fantastic, using a good font size where you don’t have to endure a headache in reading each page from eye strain.
⭐Dear reader,The Principles of Mathematics is a classic of the literature of mathematical logic that should be read by those who nurture an interest in mathematics. The Forgotten Books Collection is readable and accessible.Luiz Roberto RosaItatiba – SP – Brazil
⭐I don’t recommend this book to dynamic people who like to link theoretical concepts with practical examples and exercises. It is too massive on phrases (all the time), very extensive, 528 pages written. At the same time, neither figure nor minimal equation are found, you can count those up only in one hand. I consider this book as not being attractive nor neither exciting reading.
⭐Was going to give this one star, but the content is good. This copy is based on a scanned book and looks like a photo copy with binding. Not very good quality.
⭐I was a liitle upset after reading theese comments, they all complained about the font and chapters missing, but i just recived my copy and its perfect everything in there and the font is perfect. If you want this book buy it…
⭐When an editor simply republish something out of copyright protection, the only thing he has to do is to copy the pages, all the pages. If he just do that the client will be happy. That editor was incapable of doing that simple thing. Some pages from Bertrand Russell’s book are *missing*. This is simply infuriating and absolutely inexcusable. To add insult to injury, the font is so degraded as to make the reading difficult. A double rip-off.
⭐200 pages missing on the book from 134 to 253 – Chapters XVI to XXX. Ashame! I would like to return and the policy said that it will be only paid half of the price + I have to assume shipping costs. With the money I spend buying books in amazon, I think this is a poor solution. Janet
⭐I read this book over half a century ago as a UG student of Philosophy and ordered a copy from Amazon recently so that i could experience the bliss once again. The simple manner in which Russell explains complicated concepts is unique to Russell’s works. It is more pronounced in this book.
⭐Excellent content. Best book on the core principles of mathematics but my item seems wrongly printed or maybe I missed something
⭐Rigorous but welcomes everyone into the world of mathematics. Must for aspiring mathematician/philosopher and treasure for enthusiast.
⭐Excellent copy. A treat to read.
⭐Russell is undoubtedly a brilliant mind and this sometimes goes with a cryptic expression… But here, the “sometimes” turns into “a lot”.If you are both patient and ready to skip the convoluted, if not indigestible sections, then you might safely reach the last page of this monumental work.If not, then a better route is to use Russell’s later “Introduction to Mathematical Philosophy”, where he tried and succeeded in clarifying and correcting his thoughts in just 200 pages. This is not to say that PM doesn’t contain illuminating sections, it does but they are gems, lost in dense magma.
