⭐ The Haunted Mask by R. L. Stine is Goosebumps books number 11 in the original season order. This book was good sort a revenge plot gone bad. Carley Beth is scaredy cat, tired of everyone picking on her because she gets scared buys a mask that scares people but the mask is haunted and can’t be removed. This one is actually pretty scary for a Goosebumps book. The monster voice that the mask puts out and the personality attached is kind of terrifying. ” I’ll eat you up!” was one of the lines. This is the first book in the series so far and I like how Halloween was incorporated and the old out dated costumes mentioned, Freddy Kruger and Indiana Jones are still popular, but I haven’t seen an E.T. in some time. The Haunted Mask did bring the dreaded fake scare back, but there was only two and they were used in a way that helped the story along. The Plot: Carley Beth is a scaredy cat, who her so-called friends prank on a daily basis. They prank her into eating a worm and that a tarantula escaped. These pranks would get almost anybody but carley will scream at the top of her lungs every time. She decides she’s going to get revenge this Halloween and get a scary mask this year. She rejects the costume her mom already bought her, a duck. She gets her life savings, 30 dollars, determined to buy a scary mask on Halloween, the store is closed but the own opens back up. She finds what she wants through a door in the back. The store owner said he took the mask off the market because they were deemed to scary. She’s persistent and she buys the mask. The mask gives her a cool evil voice and serious anger issues. She scares her friends but when the fun ends, she finds the mask won’t come off. I she doomed to have the mask be her new face forever? What I Liked: The revenge storyline is great Steve and Chuck are jerk and had it coming. I loved the some of the lines where she yells, “I’ll eat you up!” to kids, then the mom of the kids says something and she says, “I’ll eat you up too!” Carley Beth gets demented and starts scaring everyone and stealing their candy. The tarantula prank was pretty good and well thought out. The horror of the mask attached to Carley Beth’s mask is good. I almost want a backstory to how the unloved were created, which were briefly discussed. The final scene was great even though it was predictable it was still pretty perfect. The Classic cover for this book is one of the best in all of Goosebumps covers. What I Disliked: Her costume was only a mask, and regular clothes, the mask was described as scary but the regular clothes would have counter balanced that on Halloween.Recommendations: This is one of the better Goosebumps books from the series. There is some good laughs and good scares. This book ranks high in my ranking. This book also has one of the better tv episodes that is a two parter, and one of the first stand alone episodes to get released on VHS when that was a thing. I rated Goosebumps the Haunted Mask by R. L. Stine 5 out of 5 stars. Here’s my full ranking of the 11 Goosebumps books that I have read in order to my favorite to least favorite Stay Out of the Basement, The Haunted Mask, Night of the Living Dummy, Welcome to Camp Nightmare, The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb, Say Cheese and Die, Let’s Get Invisible, Welcome to Dead House, The Girl who Cried Monster, The Ghost Next Door, and Monster Blood.
⭐ During virtual school this year, I looked for chapter books that would please a boy who was above grade level in reading. This fit the bill.***I am rating this book moderate, and not advanced, because my grandson was already reading at a 3rd grade level. He also does not get scared at things purposely mysterious or a bit scary. However, Goosebump books may not be appropriate for a child who scares easily and is unsettled by the type of stories found in this series.***
⭐ This is one of the few Goosebumps books that we’ve seen a recording of the television show that was made…and I have to say, in this case, the television episode was actually better than the book version. This The Haunted Mask is the story of Carly Beth just fed up with being wimpy, wimpy, wimpy…tired of constantly being teased, pranked, and scared by her friends Carly Beth is determined to get the scariest Halloween mask ever and show her friends that she’s not such a wimp after all. As with all things in the R.L Stine universe, Carly Beth’s quest to teach her tormenters a lesson comes with a hefty price. On the night of Halloween, she just can’t bring herself to put on the not-so-scary costume her mother’s made for her, instead she runs out to a shop and finds “the perfect mask” in the back room of the store, unfortunately the owner is hesitant to part with it…ultimately she gets the mask and embarks on what she thinks will be the best get even Halloween scare ever…until she realizes that the mask much more than an ugly face to care her friends with and that she may become trapped inside as it begins to change her personality as well. Will Carly Beth get the mask off? You’ll have to read to find out!Not as enjoyable as I’d have liked…The Haunted Mask isn’t a “bad” book, for me it boils down to feeling no connection to any of the characters…we don’t get to know Carly Beth before we see her pranked, teased and scared constantly and the picture the reader gets is that if these are her friends, she sure doesn’t need any enemies…they’re downright mean, the goal seems to be to embarrass her more than anything else. I think young readers would enjoy The Haunted Mask, as a whole it is one of the scarier premises of the series but for me personally, this was a flop. I didn’t think the interaction between the friends was indicative of “friend” behavior, it felt mean spirited perhaps if the build up to Halloween had been longer and we’d gotten to know the four friends just a bit more, this would have been a better read. Overall, I felt a bit let down, I rate this at three stars because the idea behind it is good, but the execution and character development was really lacking.
⭐ I have read the first 4 in this series. They are all good, but I would rate them in the order of: #3, #4, #1, #2 – Not that it matters, but just my opinion. They’re all fun with good twists.
⭐ Gain really enjoys these
⭐ I already loved this book, but this new ‘redone’ cover and behind the scenes makes it even better. The behind the scenes is awesome, it includes a sort of ‘bio’ on the Haunted Mask, a Q and A with R.L Stine, and a preview to Horrorland The Scream of the Haunted mask. Still a great read after all these years
⭐ Great book, my daughter is loving it. The book itself fell apart in the middle after my daughter left it in the car overnight. Not sure if it was the quality in the binding or if it was just the New Mexico sun that caused. Either way, would highly recommend these books. Loved em when I was young and now my kids love em too.
⭐ I bought this for my nephew…he loved it!
⭐ I have given this to my grandson as a gift… He really likes these books. He wants all the books if possible, so I’m trying to help out by gifting him some of these books
⭐ My 11 year old son really enjoyed the 8 Goosebumps, the only problem is they are a very quick read. The price was great too, usually at Barnes it’s $7-8 a book. Amazon has a great price, especially when you are buying a few.
