⭐ Bogart, as Sam Spade, famously explained: ” When a man’s partner is killed, he’s supposed to do something about it. It doesn’t make any difference what you thought of him. He was your partner and you’re supposed to do something about it. And it happens we’re in the detective business. Well, when one of your organization gets killed, it’s-it’s bad business to let the killer get away with it, bad all around, bad for every detective everywhere.” Chase, in his 1957 novel, ” The Guilty Are Afraid,” takes up that theme. Chase sets his story though not in foggy San Francisco, but in St. Raphael City, a made-up locale that seems to be a version of San Diego, corrupt, filled with wealthy men, secret clubs, and bikini-clad heiresses. Lee Brandon didn’t think much of his partner, but he wasn’t going to let his corpse lie without the truth being ferreted out. Chase provides us a well-written, absorbing story that is filled with lots of standard cliches, but is written so smoothly you allow for that even if you figure it out before our gumshoe does. Chase really gives an authentic feel to his story.

⭐ I have been reading Hadley Chase for over three decades. The master thriller writer at his best again! Full of suspenses and intrigues.

Je ne me rappelle jamais ce que j’ai lu parce que je possède déjà un très grand nombre de Chase en anglais achetés d’occasion chez “Shakespeare and co” dans les années 70, et que je les relis souvent. J’adore ce type de couverture, avec une nuance : celle-là est plus moche
