Review ‘an intelligent and harshly revealing piece of work with not a little serious penetration and power — The Times –This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. From the Inside Flap EVE Clive Thurston is living a lie. Having claimed a dying playwright’s masterwork as his own, he is hailed as a brilliant, new author. Thurston is now living the good life in Hollywood. He has a house in the country, a manservant, a beautiful fiancée .then one night he meets Eve. Eve isn’t beautiful at all, but she’s got a way about her. Thurston is captivated, and in no time, he becomes obsessed. But as everybody knows, Eve is a prostitute, and his reputation around town begins to suffer. His fiancée has been patient, but she can take no more. Thurston is drinking too much, and making bad decisions. But what he can’t figure is why Eve keeps rejecting him. If he can only make Eve love him, maybe his own redemption is at hand MORE DEADLY THAN THE MALE “George knew the exact moment when he fell in love with Cora Brant. At one moment Cora was just someone with whom he hoped to alleviate an hour of lonely boredom; at the next she was someone he was physically and mentally aware of in a most overpowering way. He had bought drinks, and he had been startled that she tackled a pint of beer. And when he looked more closely at her, he realized she was not immaculate in the accepted sense of the word. But George was not critical. Any woman was a novelty to him, and a girl like Cora Brant was far more than a novelty—she was an exciting experience.” George has been living in a gangster fantasy in which he is always the hero. Now he meets that world head on. George’s troubles have only just begun –This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ I must have read this book more than 40 years ago. All I can say is that I was totally swept up in this thriller-type novel. The writing style just sucked you in and the story line was great, although I forget the specific details. I do know that this one was a keeper and I would love to read it again. Hopefully over the decades I will enjoy it as much as I originally did.I wish they would release these old titles with their original illustrated covers. I was an avid collector of all of James Hadley Chase’s books – and most of them were top rate. My favorites being “There’s Always A Price Tag” and “You’re Lonely When You’re Dead”.

⭐ MORE DEADLY THAN THE MALE ****, 1946A strange character, unusual… George Fraser is a big guy, with large shoulders but very shy. He lives alone, very alone, his only companion is a cat, timid and wild, like him, maybe his reincarnated soul.George is selling children encyclopediae, a little job which allows him to survive. With a good training and a lot of work, he manages to develop his sales talk with some skill. At night he escapes from his lonelyness dreaming he is a tough american gangster : Al Capone and Dillinger are afraid of him…This frenzy is turning into sheer mythomania : he tells his exploits to the house maid who is a good listener…But this little narrow world is going to change !George has got the mission to train a new recruit. The young man is in fact a very tough boy who is hiding… For the matter of selling children encyclopediae he learns fast, he has a natural talent, he is a born salesman with no scruples. Very soon, he drags George on a very bad slope… him and his sister, another Chase heroine as we like them ! Cora is a young tigress who is been afraid of nobody, she is living like an animal : beautiful, savage, wanton and very filthy.George is in love and blinded like a big insect who burns his wings to a street light. He is manipulated and crushed… until the day when Cora has killed his cat. This novel is a terrifying trip in the London suburbs, which has something reminding of the well known classic “Les mystères de Paris” (Eugène Sue). And this door to door job was the first job of James, so we are given an intensive course of salesmanship, with all the bad tricks. What a lesson ! All commercial manuals are beaten.Book presentation :George Fraser, a lonely, timid fellow, lived in a dream world of gangsters, gunfights and fascinating women, and to bolster up his inferiority complex he began to imagine himself as the toughest gangster of all of them. But he boasted once too often, and to the wrong person. From that moment, harmless George Fraser was ensnared in a net of intrigue and became a cat’s-paw for murder.” Flawless professionalism here too. In this Chase thriller, the same compulsive readability and sheer hard story-telling as in every other. Mr. Chase, as always, is for me. “SHEFFIELD TELEGRAPHSee more at […]

⭐ I usually like JHC books but I’m giving up a third of the way through this one. Nasty characters, as usual you might say, but the main man is such an idiot I feel he deserves what is probably coming to him. I hope the cat was okay, he was my favourite.

⭐ I have read many of James Hadley Chase’s books and enjoyed most of them. This is one of a few that I did not enjoy. If you have not read James Hadley Chase’s books, I would recommend that you read some other book by him than this as this book might put you off reading so many of his other books that are so enjoyable.

⭐ okay crime thriller unlike James Hadley ChaseA little slow at start but got interesting towards the endwould recommend this book.

⭐ This book is in excellent condition. Very interesting book.

⭐ sent within the time schedule and the book was as stated brand new and in perfect condition, the price i paid was more than satisfactory and i will certainly make further purchases.

⭐ The books are good no doubt. But what copies I received were substandard for Amazon. I would have got better copies at church gate station. Cost me 95+ 50 delivery and a poor quality old book. The two stars I am giving is for James Hadley chase since I loved the books story anyhow.

⭐ I liked immensely everything except price. Please make it affordable for senior citizens and retired persons. Hope to get your kind attention. Thanking you in anticipation. Regards.

⭐ A tour de force. Even by this great Author’s lofty standards this is a magnificent offering. Absorbing writer of unparalleled talent
