User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review “This is the standard, modestly priced, single-volume reference work for its esoteric fields. Essential stock in all libraries, at all levels; an invaluable text book for teacher and student; and another huge achievement for its distinguished progenitor!” (Reference Review, November 2009) Review “Much more than a dictionary, this impressive work of judicious scholarship is virtually a course of instruction in the wide range of studies of language. It cannot fail to be of great value to professionals, students, and the general interested public.” —Noam Chomsky, Massachusetts Institute of Technology From the Inside Flap David Crystal’s A Dictionary of Linguistics and Phonetics has long been the standard single-volume reference for its field. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This book is extremely useful for linguists, because of the large variation in terminology from linguist to linguist it is helpful to have a professional dictionary that has a surplus of terms and definitions to match. I’d recommend getting a copy if you are a Undergrad, the sooner the better. I am positive you will continue to use it throughout your linguistic development. I give only a four star because some of the definitions aren’t deep enough if you don’t already have a strong grasp of the term already.
⭐I have found this book to be an excellent resource for an introductory course in linguistics (History of the German Language). It covers most of the vocabulary that was foreign (new) to me and helped greatly in my studies. (Also see my review of Campbell)
⭐This book is an excellent resource.Really great to have this book when studying phonetics at university level and to have it on my laptop.
⭐I needed this for my Linguistics class for college and this was the best priced one I could find, Book was well taken cared of.
⭐This book has been extremely beneficial to have,to support my English degree work. Having the revered David Crystal’s name on it, sealed the deal. It lives up to my expectations. It is easy to use, and the definitions are very well explained.
⭐A must have for any linguistic student, don’t bother with a normal dictionary as it will not suffice. This is the holy grail of linguistic dictionaries.
⭐For University
⭐If you are studying linguistics you can not miss this book. It contains all the necessary definitions and it is very clear and well organized.
⭐This is a must for anyone who is embarking on a course in English language and/or linguistics. Crystal is a treasure.
