⭐ Little & Lion was written by Brandy Colbert. I read this book a while ago, but I’m woefully behind with my book reviewing. I found this book on the new release shelf of the young adult section of my town library. I’d seen this book on a few lists of Hot YA books, so I happily added it to my pile.Suzette returns home to Los Angeles from boarding school, and tries to settle into life with her blended family. Her stepbrother Lionel has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and she wants to be there for him. Rejoining her family serves as a pleasant distraction from having to think about what happened at school.As the summer progresses, it becomes clear that Lionel is struggling with his issues, which places Suzette in an awkward position. Should she tell her parents what she knows or should she keep her brother’s secrets?Little & Lion touches upon so many relevant themes in modern American society. Suzette and her mother are African American, and Lionel and his father are Jewish. So their blended family is truly a melding of race and religion, and not the stereotypical Brady Bunch situation with two families joining together. Sexuality is also a major theme: Suzette is bisexual, and over the course of the book, experiences romantic feelings for both boys and girls. Of course, there’s also the issue of mental illness; Lionel is portrayed as a very realistic character, and he doesn’t want to be defined by his diagnosis.I would absolutely recommend Little & Lion. Young adult books are so much better now than they were in the 1990s when I was a teen. I am always amazed by the depth of the books, the multicultural perspectives available nowadays, and the quality of the writing. This book will appeal to the target demographic as well as fans of young adult genre. I am certainly looking forward to reading more from Colbert in the future.

⭐ Three amazing things about LITTLE & LION…1. Diversity. As far as representation goes, I hope Little & Lion becomes the rule. Its characters are authentic and intersectional and exceptional, written with nuance and care. This book’s a must-read for contemporary YA fans.2. Suzette! She has moments of relatable doubt about who she is and who she wants to be, but mostly she’s strong and steadfast and awesome.3. Focus on family. Suzette and Lionel have the best parents. They’re supportive and loving and appreciative of their kids’ unique qualities, but somehow, they never feel too perfect to be believable. Also, I adored Suzette and Lionel’s relationship. They’re not biologically related (they’re not even legally step-siblings) but there’s so much love and loyalty between them. I was constantly moved by the scenes they shared.

⭐ One of the main reasons I read YA is because I love stories about people figuring out who they are. This book is all that and then some. I loved the dynamic between Little and Lion and their parents, how complex all their friends are, and how REAL the story feels. At first I thought the author was just checking off as many popular themes as possible — diverse characters, mixed race relationships, divorce and nontraditional families, mental illness, LGBTQ characters, bullying — but it’s so well done that the story wouldn’t feel right without any of these issues.I’ll definitely read more from this author.

⭐ Why do books about people with mental illness always come around to them stopping their meds and going off the rails? Aren’t there any other stories to tell about us?Before anyone jumps in to yell at me, yes, there is plenty of good to be said about this book. That’s why I gave it two stars, instead of just one. But ultimately when I think about it, I can’t avoid a sour tang of disappointment that once again, this was the only thing to be said about the mentally ill character. And I know. It’s a true story, and an all too common one. But. Does that really mean it’s the only story to tell? I mean, if you want to talk about going off meds, show how hard it is to stand up and do it openly. Talk about how dehumanizing the label “noncompliant” is. Show the ways a person with a mental illness and their family can try to manage without medication. Something, anything.I get it, I do. Lion’s mental illness wasn’t the point of the book. But it was _A_ point. And loading it on Little was a coercive, abusive thing to do. And I’m tired of seeing that, too.I don’t know. I wanted to love this book so much. But instead I just feel let down.

⭐ This is a beautiful, powerful book about family, siblings, mental illness, and identity. Searingly honest and compassionate, Brandy Colbert digs deep into the loving but complicated relationship between the two siblings at the heart of the book, Suzette and her brother, Lionel. This book hit me hard and I could not put it down. One of my favorites of 2017, for sure.

⭐ I needed this book and I didn’t even know it. I’m here for all the representation this book had. This is YA done right.

⭐ I wasn’t sure what to expect reading this novel but I kept feeling the need to turn the pages. The story is compelling and keeps you interested. The characters are relatable and realistic. You can feel their emotions jump off the pages. It is definitely worth the read and my only complaint was I wasn’t ready for it to end!

Brandy Colbert does a remarkable job inhabiting the world of Suzette as she grapples with her identity, her relationship and responsibilities to her family, and how to navigate the transition from child to adult. Set against the backdrop of LA’s eastside, Little & Lion is richly rooted in a sense of place and makes you remember what it’s like to return home for the first time.Compelling, engrossing, and wonderful – just read it!

⭐ The author, Brandy Colbert, has a way with storytelling that sucks you right in!
