Description

I have something for you. When Quinn Cruz receives that cryptic text message from her older sister Nora, she doesn’t think much of it. They haven’t seen each other in nearly a year and thanks to Nora’s fierce aloofness, their relationship consists mostly of infrequent phone calls and an occasional email or text. But when a haunted Nora shows up at the lake near Quinn’s house just hours later, a chain reaction is set into motion that will change both of their lives forever.

Nora’s “something” is more shocking than Quinn could have ever imagined: a little girl, cowering, wide-eyed, and tight-lipped. Nora hands her over to Quinn with instructions to keep her safe, and not to utter a word about the child to anyone, especially not their buttoned-up mother who seems determined to pretend everything is perfect. But before Quinn can ask even one of the million questions swirling around her head, Nora disappears, and Quinn finds herself the unlikely caretaker of a girl introduced simply as Lucy.

While Quinn struggles to honor her sister’s desperate request and care for the lost, scared Lucy, she fears that Nora may have gotten involved in something way over her head—something that will threaten them all. But Quinn’s worries are nothing compared to the firestorm that Nora is facing. It’s a matter of life and death, of family and freedom, and ultimately, about the lengths a woman will go to protect the ones she loves.

User’s Reviews

Review “Sweet, scary and sometimes sordid, Little Broken Things is filled with determined women tenacious in their love for a girl whose childhood has been anything but easy.” ― Shelf Awareness”Mesmerizing…an accomplished exploration of the fragile bonds of a family as they attempt to overcome obstacles they never saw coming. ― Publishers Weekly”Baart’s novel of familial ties, betrayals, and longoverdue confrontations ventures into the territory of Paula Hawkins, Mary Kubica, and Kimberly Belle. Baart’s pacing keeps the novel driving forward, while a core group of narrators offers different perspectives on the murky facts of Lucy’s upbringing. Full of twists and turns, this is a great addition to the recent surge in suspenseful domestic fiction.” ― Booklist”Part psychological thriller, part women’s fiction, Baart’s latest novel is wholly compelling. Told from the perspectives of three complex women (a mother and her two adult daughters) over the course of four emotional days…Questions abound and, in true thriller fashion, answers are doled out on a need-to-know basis, keeping the tension high from beginning to end. Baart’s smartly exquisite prose and her setting of a scene, not so much physically as mentally, allows readers to relate personally to these three women and to embrace the little girl in their care. The intricacies of family relationships, love and friendship are all skillfully explored, layered in all the right places and captivating in its entirety.” ― Romantic Times”Richly atmospheric and featuring a compelling cast of sharply drawn female characters, Little Broken Things is both a page-turner and a thoughtful examination of what it means to mother and be mothered, in all its most real and varied forms.” — Kimberly McCreight, New York Times bestselling author of Reconstructing Amelia and Where They Found Her”Beautifully layered…gives readers everything they could possible want in a novel – vivid, engaging characters, a town filled with dark secrets, a mind-twisting mystery and the ferocious power of a mother’s love. Original and gripping, Little Broken Things is a stunner that will linger with you long after the final page is turned.” — Heather Gudenkauf, New York Times bestselling author of The Weight of Silence and Not A Sound“If you liked Big Little Lies, you’ll want to crack open this new novel by Nicole Baart, which will be released in November—just in time for your Thanksgiving holiday reading. This novel will engross you in the suspenseful story of Quinn Cruz; her estranged and troubled sister, Nora; and a mysterious little girl named Lucy who shows up on her doorstep.” ― Southern Living”Nicole Baart weaves exquisite writing with unstoppable drama in this tale of family schisms and secrets on a collision course with life-threatening danger. Putting down Little Broken Things was impossible.” — Randy Susan Meyers, bestselling author of Accidents of Marriage and The Widow of Wall Street”I have long been a fan of Nicole Baart’s finely crafted, flawed characters, her deft plotting, her fluid, lovely writing, and all of these gifts are on display in Little Broken Things. I cared about these sisters, feared and hoped for them, and lost my heart to Lucy, the locked-shut little girl living in the center of the book’s secrets. It’s a gripping and suspenseful tale that kept me turning pages late into the night; move it to the top of your stack.” — Joshilyn Jackson, New York Times bestselling author of The Almost Sisters”Nicole Baart has outdone herself with this lush, evocative family drama full of shocking twists and a heart-warming grand finale. I will think about the Sanford family for a good long time. Put Little Broken Things on your fall reading list now!” — Kate Moretti, New York Times bestselling author of The Vanishing Year”Little Broken Things made me abandon my life and responsibilities for days. Stunning, beautifully wrought, tenaciously hopeful—move this book to the very top of your book club list.” — Kimberly Stuart, author of Sugar: A Novel and the Heidi Elliott series“Hold on to your hearts for this one. Nicole Baart leaves no emotion untapped with Little Broken Things as she nudges readers to ask: What kind of mother am I? With page after page of her trademark lyrical prose, Baart offers a treat of a tale that will please her loyal readers while drawing the praise of many more. Soul-stretchingly good!” — Julie Cantrell, author of Into the Free and Perennials“Suspenseful, heartfelt, and emotionally rich, Little Broken Things explores the complicated bonds of family—those we’re born into and those we choose. Baart’s writing—as always—is a delight.” — Elizabeth Blackwell, author of While Beauty Slept and In the Shadow of Lakecrest

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ Lest my review title appear complimentary, I must clarify it is not. I wish Baart had in fact made a wonderful book from not much of a premise. Unfortunately she failed to deliver anything of real substance in my opinion. All the female main characters in her fictional family seem constantly overwrought, hysterically clutching unpleasant yet essentially manageable life events to their breasts as if they were truly cataclysmic. Baart hurts herself by trying so hard to build tremendous tension and expectation over what turns out to be merely a mundane case of Horndog Hubby In The House. I especially dislike the epidemic of codependent behaviors in this tale. Liz and Nora, in particular, both made me want to scream “For Heaven’s sake, quit cowering! Grow a pair and instead of making so much of what really is NOT all that much to deal with, step up to face the music and DANCE!”

⭐ This story took so long for me to finish because it was that boring.First of all, this is suppose to be about a serious subject matter and it was written like a hokey Lifetime movie. The characters in this story are all unlikable and the story just unbelievable. There are better books out there to waste your time on.

⭐ I loved this book!! I thought this was a well written, exciting, and suspenseful novel. Trigger warnings for abuse, drug use, sexual assault, etc. This was so well written that I found myself relating to and having real feelings for each of the characters. It was great to see how they all came together in the end, and ended up closer together than where they started. This story is about as messed up as family dramas can get, and I thought the way each character struggled with and worked through their situation was understandable, though frustrating at times. As I noted above, the growth of each of the main characters though was wonderful, and great to see them each come into their own. Overall I highly recommend this one!!

⭐ I purchased this book from Amazon to read and discuss with @saltwaterreads for December 2017. Little Broken Things by Nicole Baart. Nora has a secret and it all begins with the little girl that she dropped off with her sister Quinn and demanded she keep the girl safe and keep her whereabouts a secret. However, the secrets that come undone are not just about the little girl that began them all. They are deep, dark family secrets that everyone in this book has overlooked or hidden for a very long time. The characters in this book are very realistic. The family dynamics in the book are complicated and only become more and more complicated as you read on. In the end, all things broken only make you stronger.

⭐ I had trouble putting this book down. The plot was very well-paced and surprising, and I kept wanting to read on to see what happens to the characters. I found myself very invested in the storyline, and although at times it was rather predictable, that didn’t take anything away from me at all. Little Broken Things is listed as both suspense/thriller and contemporary fiction, but I feel that it leans way more towards contemporary fiction. There is a bit of a mystery to the plot, but that mystery doesn’t necessarily drive the whole story. The story begins with Nora dropping off a child with her sister, Quinn. This child’s origins are unknown to both the reader and Quinn, and leads all of us to question where she came from. Known as Lily, she is an integral part of the story, and leads all three women to realize something about their own roles as mothers. Quinn has been trying to get pregnant for awhile and loves kids, and Liz suddenly realizes that she may not have been the perfect mother for her own three kids. Nora’s part in Lily’s life is even more intriguing. Is she her biological mother? Did she kidnap the child? All of these possibilities are laid before us, but the ending may surprise you. I was not quite surprised, as I guessed the ending fairly early on, but there was so much more to this story than the predictable ending.I loved this story and what the thoughts it brought to my mind. We had a fantastic discussion on Salt Water Reads and it brought to light even more than I ever could have imagined alone. I really enjoy being a part of a book club, even if it’s only an online one. If you’re interested in character development with a touch of thriller, this is an obvious choice!

⭐ Little Broken Things can be applied literally to the little girl, Everlee, in this story. But it can just as easily apply to the mother/wife broken by her emotionally distant/abusive husband, the daughter broken by family dynamics and a best friend who had no idea how to be whole and another daughter broken by her need to find love and her place in the world. While I enjoyed getting to know all the characters, I found the characters of Liz and Lucy/Everlee the most well rounded and interesting. This is a story that unfolds slowly and frankly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. At times, I enjoy a fast paced suspense that has me holding my breath. But when it comes to multi-layered family stories, I prefer to have it unfold slowly so I can savor each revelation. Because I read so many thriller/suspense novels, I had no problem figuring out the final secret before it was revealed to the characters. Ms. Baart had done a good job of dropping all the subtle clues if you wanted to follow them.I found Ms. Baart’s descriptions to be lush. That is the only word that seems to apply to descriptive passages that made me want to linger to read again rather than feeling like the passages were slowing down the story. This is my first Nicole Baart novel and after reading it, I can’t wait to start on the ARC of her latest novel I received recently.

⭐ Wow, never have I read a book I almost stopped reading, slow to start, BUT then it gained momentum and just took off right to the end. This story has you guessing, about each character, the story, how will it end, whose the father, how will relationships be restored? whose relationship will end? who will be able to forgive? What will happen to Tiffany & Everlee?Reading this book is like running and not being able to stop…

⭐ Ms. Baart tackles a difficult subject with compassion and grace. Her characters are intelligent, well-designed and are totally believable. She tells the story of one seemingly perfect family filled with secrets and flaws. Of course, we all know there is no such thing as a perfect family and the journey of discovering this family’s flaws and secrets is the core of this excellent book. It was a very satisfying read. I’ll definitely read more of Ms. Baart’s books.

⭐ Little Broken Things is a book about Quinn and Nora, their mother, the mystery surrounding a little girl, the search for answers, the fight for truth, and the many layers that make up relationships. You get ALL of this info within the first forty pages, when you realize YOU HAVE ALREADY READ FORTY PAGES AND HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? Then you also realize you don’t care, so you shut yourself in a quiet room, turn your phone off, dive back into the tumultuous story unfolding in Key Lake, and finish it in a day and a half.Nicole Baart masterfully weaves a gripping story of family, friends, secrets, and ties that bind – the bulk of which takes place in a four-day span. Once you start reading you simply cannot stop. Brilliant!

⭐ It’s been two weeks since I finished this book and it has stuck with me, a rare feat given the volume of the books I read. Told from the alternating perspectives of sisters Nora and Quinn, and their mother. I tend to most enjoy books written in this format and this was no different! I had theories from early on, some true, some not and I enjoyed figuring out where the story would go. This is my first book of Baart’s and it reminded me of a Diane Chamberlain book which is the highest compliment I can bestow!I received an advance review copy of this book from the Great Thought’s Ninja Review Team. All opinions are my own.
