Description
Since the implosion at The Oasis and Derek’s stay at Hawk Headquarters, The Shade has fallen into a state of utter chaos. To make matters worse, the citizens of Derek’s kingdom have become suspicious of his loyalties and accuse him of siding with the enemy… At a time when Derek desperately needs full cooperation from his subjects, they wish to put their own King on trial.
Meanwhile, Sofia is being held hostage by the hunters. They are determined to rid her of her infatuation with the vampire. She submits to the strict routine and training they impose on her, but the only fuel that keeps her going is the thought of reuniting with Derek – something Reuben is fighting with every fiber of his being to ensure will never happen.
…Until one day, out of the blue, Reuben appears to have a change of heart and comes to Sofia with a proposal; a solution that she never dreamed possible. A solution that would fulfil her heart’s deepest desires and secure her and Derek’s future together, forever.
But can she really trust this man who is so renowned for his hatred of vampires? Does she even have a choice?

⭐ Here we are, back at The Shade. Well not exactly, but you know what I mean. I can definitely say that this is my least favorite book in the series so far, but not by much. As you can see from my 4.5 heart rating (instead of the normal 5), I still loved the book! The story opens with a back story from Camilla, who is Sofia’s mother. To be honest, we desperately needed this back story. But the story continues to be in large part about Camilla, who is a conniving witch of a woman. I think that’s why I didn’t enjoy this story as much because I was just so done with Camilla. Once I found out that Camilla hated her daughter because her husband loved Sofia more, I just couldn’t take anymore of her. I mean how twisted is that? The absolute best thing that came out of this story was the return of a character that we all thought for sure was dead. I seriously wanted to scream for joy when this was revealed! With the return of this beloved character came a change of heart for another character. But unfortunately it was too late and proved to not matter. In the beginning of this story, I was EXTREMELY disappointed in Derek and basically wanted to strangle him with my bare hands. He still has some making up to do in my eyes, so hopefully he will in the next book!I was so happy when Sofia made it out of Hawk Territory even though she had to bring Reuben with her. That was extremely frustrating and I’m still not sure exactly how that’s going to play out for Sofia and The Shade. When we finally literally return to The Shade, we return to a cluster mess of pure chaos and I was extremely worried there for a little while. I couldn’t believe the standoff between Derek and his father Gregor. I’m glad Derek grew some balls and proved why he was King of The Shade. Gregor had chosen to side with Darkness, which apparently is a tangible force that Derek is going to have to face, so when Gregor tried to choose the Light it cost him his life. Which was kind of sad even after everything he put Sofia and Derek through. It was also really reassuring to see how much influence Sofia has at The Shade, especially with the Naturals. It was also nice to see that Derek and Sofia were seen as a unit and not two separate entities. With the end of the book came the demise of another character. I was so glad when this finally happened because I couldn’t stand another minute of this person torturing Sofia. I literally breathed a sigh of relief, even though it completely shattered Sofia and her accomplice. Also with the ending we get a nerve racking VISION and I cannot with what was seen!Other than Camilla playing such a large part in this novel, I really don’t like “the cure” and “the immune” aspects of this series. I really wish they would get over one and change the other. But we will see if that happens, I really hope so!I CANNOT wait to see what the next book holds!
⭐ All I have to say is that I’ve read the first 4 books and I’m getting mad, mad, and madder! Sofia and Derick are no where near being able to be together. I’m just not sure I’m going on from here. I think I’m done with this series there is hardly any happiness in this series s o far the author said she believes in happy endings well I don’t see it happening. She writes about this other vampire that wants Sofia and he gets to here twice almost kills her each time while trying to rape here and keep her. Her crazy mother tried to have him turn her at 9 years of age but she is immune then her mother promises her to him at that Tim so he thinks when she gets older he can have her what kind of mother could do that to her daughter what kind of mother watches him nearly kill her twice while trying to rape her what kind of mother is so jealous of her daughter?? Derek saved her the first time he got hold of her the second time she and Vivienne killed him. I do not understand why that bit## is still alive at the end of book 4! Now another vampire is after her supposedly the original Derick is the most powerful vampire other than the original so how on earth is there any happiness in this series I have to say there hasn’t been any yet. Even though this is a long series and Derick and Sofia’ s ending is supposed to be at book 7 shouldn’t there be some happiness in he last 4 books? When a person reads a series ans there is hardly any happiness at all in the first 4 books it gets very disappointing. I’m sure there’s more but I’ve vented long enough I realize books are supposed to have your feelings going in all different directions but my feelings aren’t they are just going one way and its not good at all!!!!
⭐ A Shadow of Light starts with Derek returning to The Shade. He has been allowed to leave hunter headquarters by Sofia’s father, Ruben/Aiden. Aiden is enraged that his daughter is in love with a vampire. He believes that deprecating them will dissolve the bond they have. Derek believes that leaving Sofia is a good choice after the ordeal that took place at the Oasis. He returns to The Shade to find that The Shade’s inhabitants are questioning his loyalties to The Shade. They also want to know where Sofia is. The want true sanctuary and they believe Derek and Sofia together is a requirement as the prophecy dictated. Derek once again struggles in Sofia’s absence.Sofia is at hunter headquarters and is forced to train as the hunters do. She is faced with the mother that loves only power and not her unwanted daughter. She also begins building an uneasy relationship with her father. The whole time she is at hunter headquarters she is thinking of Derek. Even though she believes their relationship is doomed she still fights for it.Aiden plays every card he has to break Sofia’s bond with Derek. He finally reunites her with someone she thought to be lost. His final attempt is to take her back to The Shade with a promise of a cure that here has seen with her own eyes. Can she dare to trust her father and hope for a cure?I liked this book more than the previous two. They could all do with a bit of summarizing but this one was better. I’m getting used to the various POV changes.
⭐ This turned out to be a very weak story. I wanted so very much to like it, but its very predictable, and the characters are really one dimensional. It is told from first person, switching between different characters. I find that at times I have to flip back to the beginning of the chapter to remind myself who I am heading about, because the characters are so undeveloped that it’s hard to distinguish between them. In the end it hurts the series, because the characters’ lack of development leaves me just not being ungrateful truly caring what happens to any of them. The only reason I have purchased anything further is that no matter how bad a story is, I want to know what happened to the characters. I am now six books in,and truly just wished I had stopped after the first. So far, the story could easily have been condensed into one book. After the first three, I had waited until the books went on sale so I didn’t have to spend too much more to find out, and it’s not worth the two hours to read the book
⭐ Like the rest of this series, from the moment I opened this book I couldn’t put it down. I love the depth that we get to see for all of the characters – I was especially happy to see the development of Claudia and to get the insight into her past. Ingrid/Camilla is still a bit of a mystery with her past but I get the feeling we see more of that in the next book. And more twist to add to the series as well. Just when you think it can’t change it does – and not in a bad way either. All in all, totally loving this series and now off to read the next book – can’t wait to see what happens next for Sophia and Derek.
⭐ I have another favorite Author! I didn’t think anyone could compete with Rachel Higgison! Best series of books I’ve read since I found Rachel Higgison :)Not many books can capture my attention & draw me in. I read because it helps me fall asleep. So if I’m reading during the day it must be a good book! This series is amazing & draws you in from the beginning. I have hated each time I have had to stop reading any of the books. There is always something going on. It’s a page turner!I am always sick & can’t do the things I used to even though I’m still young(ish). It’s a breath of fresh air when I read a good book. I really needed to find another favorite author because I read all of Rachel’s books & needed books to read while I wait for her next book. But any books I read in the mean time just never compare to Rachel’s. They are always disappointing & I get board to easily & have to make myself finish the book. But not with Bella Forest! I have inhaled this series & also “A Shade of Kiev” which was also Amazing! I have already Pre-Ordered book 11 & can’t wait! Luckily I still need to read the “Beautiful Monster” series! I just know I’ll love it to! :)Thank You Bella!
⭐ **might contain spoilers**!I’m happy Vivienne survived. How?! Suppose to be impossible right? No vampire can leave the hunter’s territory alive. And so they say. But she survived all this time. Probably just tormented to death. OMG Borys is finally dead n out of the picture. His sedistic ways were getting to me. Not a fan of such a character. It’s kinda good the humans and the vampires of the Shade were cooperating so The Shade can survive, so the humans n vampires could co-exist so they can prep for the war n the changes Derek was bringing to The Shade. Derek’s father died unexpectedly n wasn’t explained thoroughly how. I know he ripped his heart out. But did “This Darkness” appear and killed him? I know he was battling the darkness w/in him. Did an unidentified character appeared, killed him, did whatever to his body and then disappeared like that vampire who was attracted to Derek disappeared out of thin air? There seems to be a hint that maybe there’s more to the Originals and they’ve been accessing the Shade already w/o notice. Disappearing in n out. How can you explain Derek’s father’s death?! Is Vivienne back to her healthy vampire self to give Sophia her blood? What is w her blood that all the vampires crave? And the Originals want her too? Did I read that part right? Ingrid n her husband are so bad it’s not worth dreading over of their fate. So the cure wasn’t a cute after all. Uh, the lies!!!! Now to brace for the unknown with the true darkness, The Originals!
⭐ I really like this series overall (so far). It’s a good read and I found it fun. It’s more adult than the Twilight books with a lot of killing and some sex. I felt it was like a cross between a mature Twilight novel and the TV series Vampire Diaries. I really like both and so I enjoy these books. I went through the first two very fast and then found out it is a continuous story over what I believe is seven books. I have read the first four so far but I’m not going through them as fast as the first two. My only complaint is that each book has been left as a to be continued story so you have to buy the next book. I prefer books to have a completed ending and then the following book branch out into another story direction, even in a series. These seem like they are written so you will have to buy the next book in order to find out what happens next. They are very short books and there’s a bunch of them. Probably smart marketing for someone who wants to make a lot of money on a trend. The audio books are very good. I enjoyed most of the voice actors they used and felt they read well. This is my first book review and I had to answer four questions about the book with minimal pre-determined options for answers before I could write a review. I don’t like the choices they gave me but I did it anyway so I could tell you about the book. For example the first question (in case you have never reviewed a book on here), How would you describe the plot of this book? With only three options for answers, Predictable, Some twists, or Full of surprises. I don’t feel the book was predictable but I think there is a lot of range between some twists and full of surprises. I think there should be more options for describing a book.
⭐ This was another action packed and informative installment in the Shade of Vampire series! Aside from all of the turmoil going on at The Shade we got quite a bit of historical information on some of the supporting characters which I found very interesting. We got a very deep look into the relationship between Sofia’s parents, how it started, how it ended and what happens once they are back under the same roof now that Ingrid is being held prisoner by the hunters. Talk about a demented relationship! Sofia’s mom was straight up crazy and they kept hinting at some terrible past before she met Sofia’s dad and I wonder if we’ll ever learn what that was because without that there are no redeeming qualities to that woman! I felt bad for Aiden because he clearly loved Camilla/Ingrid and had no idea of her insecurities towards Sofia but when it came to his behavior with Sofia I did not agree with his methods. I was in the same mindset as Sofia, he may be her father and love her, but he gave up his right to tell her what to do when he abandoned her 9 years ago. Not to mention she’s technically an adult now and is more than capable of making her own decisions. The biggest surprise for me was how I felt about Claudia in this book, I really liked her back story and my heart totally went out to her. I look forward to see what’s in store for her in future books.I wasn’t thrilled that Sofia and Derek spent much of this book apart but I was glad to see that Sofia never gave up trying to get back to him. Derek wanted to be with Sofia but he had his hands full with everything going on at The Shade. I think the author did a good job of portraying his internal struggles as he tried to deal with everything that kept getting thrown at him, all while trying to hold off the darkness that was always in the background waiting to draw him back in. I liked how everyone rallied around him and supported him. I also liked that not all of the progress that was made in the politics of The Shade in the last book weren’t totally undone in this one. When Derek is finally reunited with Sofia he has to deal with the insatiable bloodlust and I could totally feel his desperation as he fought to resist what he so craved. Sofia, being the awesome character that she is, handled the situation beautifully and I loved the revelations Derek had at this point. It’s clear that they are stronger together. And with all of the turmoil still surrounding The Shade and their own problems of how they can possibly have a relationship together still hanging over their heads they are going to have to remember that fact in order to face what is surely to come! I can’t wait to see where the series is going to take me next!
⭐ This series just gets better and better and so far all these books have finished dramatically. Here’s my take on this installment:* It’s a fast read and is never boring.* There are now parallels appearing between the other couples in this series and the relationship that Derek and Sofia have. This provides a running theme with these vampire/human relationships.* This book is told from several points of view and is a good all-round view of the story.* Dramatic events that make you gasp.* It is a little predictable but no overly so.* This particular installment draws comparisons to LJ Smith’s – The Vampire Diaries with the introduction of a new threat. This made the book feel a little less original in its storyline.* Sweet romance between Derek and Sofia but has taken a back seat to the worsening situation around them.* This author is not afraid to kill off characters that you least expect.* The power Sofia holds over other characters, apart from Derek is intriguing and I can’t wait to find out why she has this hold over them.A fantastic read once again and I can’t wait to see what happens next.4 stars!
