⭐ This book is written from 5 points of view– Derek, Sofia, Ben, Claudia, and Lucas. For the most part it sticks to Derek and Sofia, but to add a little bit of a mix to it we do get quite a bit of insight from Ben. Then there are a few chapters where we get inside of Lucas and Claudia’s mind, which was a nice addition. This was my absolutely favorite line from any of the books so far:Let the sandcastle collapse. In its place, I will build a fortress-one that waves could never destroy. – SophiaThis book gave me so much anxiety. I was holding my breath through every event and as soon as I thought we had made it through, another crazy event happened and I found myself holding my breath again. This happened through the WHOLE book. It was one stressful event after the other, but it was amazing. I couldn’t put the book down! Some of Sofia’s choices in the book are quite puzzling. Yes, the question of whether or not Derek will turn her into a vampire does finally come up in this book. The circumstances under which Sofia is unexpectedly reunited with her mother AND her father are extremely intense and super heartbreaking for her. The good thing is that seeing them is not the most important of her worries. In the end of the book we find out that Sofia is ‘the immune’ and I am NOT thrilled about this at all! All I can say is Forrest better have some trickiness up her sleeve for this season of book because I really don’t want t end up disappointed!Derek has many troublesome moments in this book. One of the most frustrating things to read about is how Derek lets his father get under his skin. Adoringly, he’s not scared to take on anyone or anything when it comes to Sofia. To be honest, the things that he will do for Sophia is amazing. Painstakingly, Derek takes on so much physical abuse in this book. Some of it is very noble and some of it is punishment, but ALL of it is extremely heartbreaking. The book ends on yet another cliffhanger and I was left screaming that Derek BETTER NOT actually listen to Reuben’s request or I will FLIP OUT! (Can you tell how emotionally invested I am in this series yet? ;))I’m glad we are able to follow up with Ben in this book after the heart shattering decisions he made in the previous book. We learn that he is convinced he’s doing everything in Sofia’s best interest, but the readers know better and eventually Ben does come to his senses! The only question now is, is he in too deep to change his mind? My heart jumps with glee to find out that Ben does finally make his way back to Sofia! I won’t say how or why, but I’m so glad he did because we get to see a completely different side of Ben than what we have been seeing this far. This in itself is extremely relieving and short lived. He actually tells Sofia that if she is team Derek Novak, then so is he! I was so shocked to know that those words actually came out of Ben’s mouth! Towards the end of the book we learn that all of Ben’s choices were not in vain and his contacts actually prove to be lifesaving!Lucas. I hate to even talk about him because he betrayed his family in the worst way possible. He committed the ultimate betrayal and for what? Nothing worth it, I know that much. All I know is I wouldn’t want him to be a family member of mine. If I didn’t hate Lucas before this book, I sure as heck do now! The best and worst part of the book had do to with Lucas however. I couldn’t even enjoy the fact that Lucas had been taken care of because of what he did milliseconds before that. I found myself on the verge of tears reading this scene. It was so hard to read.During Claudia’s chapter we find out the she does have a heart (soft spot) after all! Who would’ve guessed that? I know I wouldn’t have. However, she does play a crucial part in this story. I swear Claudia is just like a sour patch kid! She can’t do something nice without doing something bad to offset it. Claudia becomes intent on turning Sofia at the most inconvenient time where no-one can help her. That’s not the Claudia we saw just a few chapters before. Now the biggest worry is, was Claudia successful?!

⭐ ***MAY BE SPOILERS AHEAD***This is one of the best series. But I am getting so tired of how drawn out and wordy the books can be. How long does it take to get to the point? By now, Sofia and Derek should be past the childish actions and hesitations. Speak your mind about the important things. They do about everything else. It’s just too much contradicting how they really are. I was so glad to see the hunters finally meet up with the vampires. Now we have some real interactions to come. And there’s a big surprise about Sofia at the end. And for Pete’s sake, have sex again already! Wth is with that? It’s not like they are a virgin. I know its all about him not treating her like all the other women but this is getting ridiculous. I hate when authors do stuff just to write more books. Say what you need to say and don’t ruin it by dragging it out just so you have more books. With all this said, I still recommend this series.

⭐ Sofia and Derek are back on the island together and trying to work through the ups and downs of their complicated relationship. Life is starting to boil over for everyone. There are so many unresolved relationships that it is comical at times. Sofia talks of sandcastles and how they are temporary and eventually washed away. She sees her relationship with Derek as a sandcastle that will eventually fall apart. She can find hope for everything else but in her eyes their relationship must end at some point. Because Derek is a vampire and she isn’t.Then there is Gregor. Gregor is Derek’s father and he is driven by an eagerness for power over The shade. He hates the loyalty that most of The Shade’s vampire population shows for Derek. Once Derek’s father is back on the island he shows an instant dislike for Sofia and ridicules Derek and his choices. He is even more hateful toward Derek personally because he has been seen as a leader of the shade while Derek was in the enchanted sleep. Gregor and Lucas are both driven by jealousy of Derek’s power over The Shade and his affection for Sofia. We get a slight look at Sofia’s mother and father’s story in this book as well. Ben has joined the hunters as he said he would and he finds himself questioning what is right and wrong. This addition does provide a glimpse into the workings behind the hunters and another vampire clan. A few characters do meet their end in this book and I can’t say that I mind that they are gone. There is more bouncing POVs with the newer characters as well. It seems that the shifting POV is used to lengthen the books because some of it is practically pointless and does not add to the story.

⭐ I’m not sure why it took me so long to get around to reading this since I loved the first two books so much. Luckily I caught this on sale or I might not have ever read it. I guess I just figured I knew where the story was going to go and it would get predictable. However, it was the complete opposite. I found myself surprised with where it was going and found myself once again sucked into the book. I did find myself slightly losing interest for a short amount of time somewhere in the middle but it didn’t last long. I also often find myself getting annoyed with Sofia at times. But other than those minor irritations, I had a hard time putting it down. I was also completely shocked at what happened in the end. I completely did not see that coming at all. I thought for sure where a particular character’s story was going to go and then Bella Forrest throws a curveball. Loved it and can’t wait to read the next. I might have to get KU though in order to read more of this series since there are more than 50 books in it.

⭐ I don’t mind darkness in a book, for how else will the light have any meaning? However, I hate when the dark gets way more exposure than the light. That is just depressing and meager little droplets of hope are not enough to sustain me in an ongoing series. By the third book I’d been hoping for SOMETHING positive to carry me to the next, but since Derek is an idiot and listened to Aiden I don’t really have any more energy to give this story. Next, Sofia will be naive and run back to the Shade leaving a trail for the hunters. If not, something equally stupid is likely and I’m just done.

⭐ I have another favorite Author! I didn’t think anyone could compete with Rachel Higgison! Best series of books I’ve read since I found Rachel Higgison :)Not many books can capture my attention & draw me in. I read because it helps me fall asleep. So if I’m reading during the day it must be a good book! This series is amazing & draws you in from the beginning. I have hated each time I have had to stop reading any of the books. There is always something going on. It’s a page turner!I am always sick & can’t do the things I used to even though I’m still young(ish). It’s a breath of fresh air when I read a good book. I really needed to find another favorite author because I read all of Rachel’s books & needed books to read while I wait for her next book. But any books I read in the mean time just never compare to Rachel’s. They are always disappointing & I get board to easily & have to make myself finish the book. But not with Bella Forest! I have inhaled this series & also “A Shade of Kiev” which was also Amazing! I have already Pre-Ordered book 11 & can’t wait! Luckily I still need to read the “Beautiful Monster” series! I just know I’ll love it to! :)Thank You Bella!

⭐ 4.5 Stars!Going into Books 3 was exciting because we had learned that Sofia’s was the head man for the Hunters in the U.S. and her mother was a vampire, who was with the Maslen’s.This book showed so many sides to Derek and Sofia’s relationship. Their many struggles and concerns for the other. They must fight the doubt that those around them is constantly putting in their minds especially if they are to fulfill the prophecy which might I say has to be a huge shadow hanging over them.Ben shows us what a changed man he has become and that he truly wants the best for Sofia. It’s a great side of him that as a reader you can truly grow to love.I wish I could talk more about this book, because let’s face it, a lot and I mean a lot happens within these pages. However, I don’t want to spoil it for any of you future readers. Just open it and continue the story and I hope you’ll love it as much as I did.I’m crazy eager to start the next book, because I want to know what will come of Derek and Sofia especially who they’re with. 😉

⭐ ‘She lit up the darkness surrounding The Shade, and for a kingdom that had no morning, only eternal night, her light was life.’This was my favorite book in the series yet! With the revelations in the second book regarding Sofia’s parents and Derek’s father returning to The Shade the stakes were greatly raised in this book. It was clear that Derek and Sofia had many enemies who either wanted them separated or wanted Sofia for their own purposes. All of this made for some great twists and turns and tons of action throughout this book! I loved that when we pick back up with them at the start of this book, despite the fact that Derek’s father has returned to rule The Shade, Derek and Sofia are just two teenagers in love. Even with all of Derek’s responsibilities his father is throwing at him they manage to reserve time for each other to sneak away and just be teenagers, it was so sweet seeing them be so happy and carefree. Of course life in The Shade is not happy nor carefree so these blissful escapes don’t last too long for real life starts to creep back in. Derek and Sofia’s love runs so deep that I truly believe it can withstand anything but they are sure thrown their fair share of tests throughout this book. And of course we have the whole immortal/human issue that they have to deal with. It just seems that everything is stacked against them and I really was drawn into the whole star crossed lovers thing, their relationship is so well written that it just sucks you right in and you totally root for them. I loved how noble Derek turned out to be when he set out to show everyone that Sofia meant more to him than all of the other women before her and vowed to keep their relationship chaste until she became his wife and I loved his determination to make that happen. It was very romantic!Aside from the changes and trials of Derek and Sofia’s relationship there were also big changes happening at The Shade, I loved how Sofia stepped up to the plate and embraced her role in ensuring that Vivienne’s prophecy is fulfilled. Of course, for all the advancements that were made, I am fearful that the events towards the end of the book put all of that into jeopardy again but I guess time will tell as the series goes on! There were a few new characters introduced, my favorite being Gavin. I loved the brotherly relationship he had with Sofia and I really liked how Derek respected that. Ben also comes back in a big way and proves to be very important in Derek and Sofia’s battle, though my heart is broken for him.Of course when all of their enemies end up meeting in an epic showdown, things are completely thrown into the air and I’m not sure if anything will be the same after what happens. All I know is that I want to keep reading to see what happens next! This series is very well written and completely engrossing, once you start you can’t stop!

⭐ This series is getting better with each book and these are the reasons why I think you need to sink your teeth into these vampires.* It’s well written, fast paced and keeps you guessing. I could not put this book down.* A diverse group of characters to keep you interested.* A gorgeous romance between Derek (Vampire) and Sofia (Human).* Despicable villains that make you cringe with their wickedness.* A new twist involving Sofia is thrown into the mix and where this is going to lead has me intrigued.* Great action scenes that make you feel like you’re there. You can almost hear the commotion going on around you.* Like any good vampire story, no character is safe from destruction and there certainly are a couple of shocks in this book.* Fantastic emotional expression. This story has you swooning, wanting to hide, shocked and even slightly teary.* The ending is left open with a new twist to lead us into the next book. Thankfully it’s already available otherwise this would be hard to take. ;-)This book was a vast improvement on the last one in regards to its predictability. I was not able to guess as often what would happen next, and the twists and turns keep you on your toes.Love this series 5 stars!

⭐ Oh. My. Goodness. For a “non-writer” like me, I don’t know how the human mind can come up with enough of a storyline to create ONE unbelievable, awesome, “can’t put it down” book, but DANG!!! Bella has now done it three times in a ROW! After finishing book 2 I was literally on the edge of my seat waiting for the next installment (thank goodness Bella writes fast).Literally within the very first chapter, I was already jumping up and down in my seat and squealing (yes, my family is used to it by now). The continuation of Sophia and Derek’s story had so many twists and turns I LITERALLY could not put the book down. (I actually fixed lunch for my children WHILE reading – thank goodness pizza rolls are easy, a little overdone, but edible.) I laughed, I cried, I cringed, I even yelled out loud (again) as I read. I even felt sorry for Ben. What the heck!? I couldn’t stand Ben – how did THAT happen!? And I actually found someone I could despise more than Lucas . . . enter Derek and Lucas’ father (talk about evil – that man is evil with a capital E)!I only have one question . . . what the heck am I supposed to do for the next few months until book #4 comes out!?!?!?! I guess I’ll re-read #3 again – seems only right since I’ve read #1 and #2 at least three times a piece. Write fast, Bella! Write fast!
