User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review “Alan Bullock’s life of Hitler is our most comprehensive biography of the German dictator and it is an impressive and satisfying performance.”–G. A. CraigA”There have been books on Nazi thought and policy, on the diplomatic conflicts, and the World War; none has attempted to cover Hitler’s record. Bullock has now filled the gap triumphantly. With this book he puts himself in the front rank of contemporary historians.”–A. J. P. TaylorA

⭐Sir Alan Bullock (1914-2004) was one of the most distinguished British historians of the twentieth century. His groundbreak biography of Hilter was first published in the early 1950s. The edtion I am reviewing is an abridgement of the original biography to 500 pages. The book is old but still a sine qua non of biographies of Hitler biographies. Hitler (1889-1945) was born on the border of Germany and Austria. His father was cruel and distant. Adolf was the third child born to Alois Hitler and Klara his much younger third wife. Hitler was an indifferent student. He failed to win entrance to Art School in Vienna. The future Reich Chancellor was often lazy and had a difficult personality. Hitler moved to Munich where he joined the German Army in World War I. The future Fuehrer won the Iron Cross as a dispatch runner. Hitler was deeply Anti-Semitic and hated Communism. Bullock recounts a long and complex history of how Hitler formed the Nazi Party and gained complete control as dictator of Germany in January, 1933. The Nazis launched a regime of terror the world had not before witnesses. Hitler and his paladins were among he worst criminals of mass murder in the long bloody history of humanity.1. This biography is very good in discussing Hitler’s expansionistic policy in which he engulfed neighboring nations such as Poland, France, Czechoslovaki through military warfare. Hitler’s 1941 invasion of the USSR began his downfall. Hitler committed suicide in his bunker under Berlin’s Chancellory in April, 1945. Hitler had married Eva Braun, his mistress of many years, a day before their dual deaths. Hitler was a cruel and evil man who began the worst war in history. The Nazis government murdered millions of Jews in extermination camps and deprived other millions of their lives. The twelve year reign of the Nazis was one of the worst periods of European history. Much has been learned about Hitler and the Nazis since Bullock wrote this biography. Modern biographies by Ian Kershaw, John Toland ad others have expanded our knowledge of the incredible cruelness of Hitler and his odious regime. Nevetheless, Bullock’s work holds up well and is worthy of being read.
⭐This may be a five star book for a keen history buff. For me I find it very interesting as it gives us a clearer picture of how Hitler started out from the very beginning. His determination and conviction was certainly admirable. It was incredible that he succeeded at all. I’m only approx. 100 pages into the book and I find it compelling in many ways. The historical detail makes this a little heavy going for me. I’m reading this book as it was recommended as one of the most thorough on the subject of Hitler. It’s fascinating to see how Hitler and the Nazi movement evolved against many odds.
⭐A top notch biography on one of history’s most unattractive characters. I would not have read this except for the recommendation by Patrick Moynihan in Nixon’s book Six Crises. Nixon had asked Moynihan for the ten best political biographies and this was one of them.People throw around the term “sociopath” or “psychopath” with abandon nowadays. Bullock does not use those terms. However, he certainly clearly laid out the characteristics of Hitler that entitle his subject to those labels. Hitler only cared about Hitler. He did not care about politics, he did not care about Germany, he did not care about anyone else. He cared only for himself.
⭐This was a required book for a college course, and I have to say that I was impressed. This book seems to take an objective approach and explains how Hitler came to power, a real eye opener for folks who may believe that all Germans were on the Nazi Party bandwagon. I feel like I have a better understanding of what led up to WWII, and the rise of the Nazi party. I also feel like I have a better awareness of how tyrants become elected to power. Its chilling to realize how easy it can be for the wrong people to end up in charge. Its also incredible that a leader who was economically brilliant, with excellent leadership skills, could turn out to be a psychopath.
⭐I bought this book on dictators, to assure myself, that one person running for POTUS, exibits identical behavior as did Hitler. It was eye-opening, theme presenting that all dictators behave in a similar manner, where self involvement comes before any one, or any nation.Narcisstic behaviors were evident with Hitler, dipicting a selfish maniac, who cared only about himself. The similarities are just about identical in our modern times here in America.
⭐For several years I was unable to find an inexpensive copy of Bullock. I had to read this book in three separate college courses. One was a social psychology course and this book kicked Nietzsche in practical application.I have found that even the students in this contemporary society who consider themselves too advanced and enormously put upon by our educational hopes, find this book enlightening and somewhat horrifying. Its the best gift I gave this year and it went to a soon to be freshman in high school.
⭐I bought this book to study Hitler’s actions and attitude. It didn’t trll me anything new bur did refresh my memory from history xlass
⭐Thoroughly documented history of one of the evilest persons in world history. Refers to but has little to say about his treatment of Jews, Gypses, Slavs and the mentally deficiient. Hard cover edition should be included in any library of WWII in Europe, but currently they are overpriced.
⭐One reviewer here describes Hitler as a “deranged nonentity”, which I think is one of the best descriptions yet. I have read a great many books about the third Reich, and in my student travels in the ‘60s met a fair number of unrepentant Nazis, but nothing has given me such a clear idea of the basic character of Hitler as this. A nobody. Someone who even from childhood showed no talents; basically a born layabout. His only talent was his voice, and he employed that to such diabolical effect that by the time it was silenced over 50 million lives had been lost, European Jewry annihilated, and Europe wrecked. The appalling thing about it is that, though he himself murdered no one, his oratory encouraged and inspired so many thousands to murder at his command. Even a deranged nonentity can achieve very little unless there are others to do his work for him, and unfortunately they came crawling out of their obscurity to do just that. A great pity that he survived the First World War!A very impressive book.
⭐THIS IS A STUDY BOOK TO ADD TO MY LARGE COLLECTION AND IT PROVED TO BE AN EXCELLENT VOLUME. THE AMAZON FORMAT IS GOOD, HOWEVER WITH JUST A FEW LINES OF PRODUCT INFORMATION, IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN YOUR INTENDED PURCHASE ELSEWHERE BEFORE BUYING, THERE IS A CERTAIN ”LEAP OF FAITH” WHEN PURCHASING THIS WAY. I WOULD NORMALLY USE THE TERM ”PURCHASING BLIND” BUT WITH AMAZON AND THIS SELLER A LOT OF POSITIVE INFORMATION WAS GIVEN ON THOSE SAID , FEW LINES WHICH GAVE ME CONFIDENCE TO BUY, FAR FROM BLIND, AND I WAS EXTREMELY PLEASED WITH THIS BOOK. IT IS A THOROUGH REFERENCE AND WITH OVER 800 PAGES OF QUALITY REFERENCE, IT IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED. MANY THANKS TO THIS SELLER AND THE AMAZON PLATFORM.
⭐I purchased the original paper back over 30 years ago….Unfortunately, over the years it has fallen apart. When I saw the latest edition on Amazon I decided to buy it again. Why? Simply, Alan Bullock’s book is a classic piece of historical writing. Any one who wishes to read about the causes of the World War Two; Germany and Hitler should read this publication. It is not sensational in any way, simply an accurate account of why and how Hitler came to power.
⭐This book is a masterpiece. In some areas of the topic it has been superseded by later scholarship, but the main threads of the argument are of a high order.
