Description
The focus of Fernand Braudel’s great work is the Mediterranean world in the second half of the sixteenth century, but Braudel ranges back in history to the world of Odysseus and forward to our time, moving out from the Mediterranean area to the New World and other destinations of Mediterranean traders. Braudel’s scope embraces the natural world and material life, economics, demography, politics, and diplomacy.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review “A brilliant translation. . . . Braudel’s metahistorical classic [is] one of the few great histories of recent times.” — The Economist”Because Braudel’s Mediterranean can be read on several levels simultaneously, it has an importance and a range that extend far beyond any one historical category.” — J. H. Elliott, New York Review of Books”Braudel ranges with ease over the centuries, displaying an extraordinary erudition of all periods in all of Western Europe’s major languages.” — J. H. Plumb, New York Times Book Review From the Inside Flap “Braudel’s Mediterranean is a tour de force, one of the classics of this century’s historical writing.”—Charles Tilly, author of As Sociology Meets History From the Back Cover “Braudel’s Mediterranean is a tour de force, one of the classics of this century’s historical writing.”―Charles Tilly, author of As Sociology Meets History About the Author Fernand Braudel (1902-1985) was a member of the editorial board of Annales and of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, and chief adminsitrator of the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Fernand Braudel wrote his masterpiece during the nearly five years he spent confined in a German POW camp. The work is 600,000 words. A typical book is about 100,000 words. He submitted “The Mediterranean World” as a doctoral dissertation in 1947 when he was forty-five years. The book was first published in 1949. The volume for sale is a revised edition that was first published in English in the 1970’s. Many people consider “The Mediterranean World” the most important work of history written in the Twentieth Century. Fernand Braudel is also recognized as the most influential historian of the century.”The Mediterranean World” is not your typical history book focused on diplomatic or military history. Braudel was not interested in the “Captain and Kings” style of history that was common at the time. He wanted to write an “histoire total” or total history that placed the conflict between the Hapsburgs and Ottoman Turks in its proper context. To do this, Braudel tapped into works of Geography, Economics, Sociology, Linguistics and Anthropology. He enlarged the time and geographic boundaries of a typical history. Braudel was interested in the deep currents of history and not the ephemeral actions of the “Great Men”. “The Mediterranean World” was recognized as a classic when it was published. It has aged very well.I have been aware of “The Mediterranean World” for many years but have been afraid to tackle such a large book. The recent pandemic has given me an opportunity to finally give it a shot. It was a great experience and I feel as though I have knocked off a book from my bucket list. I highly recommend this book for those who have the fortitude to give it a good read.
⭐I read this to augment my participation in the Society for Creative Anachronisms with a full curiosity of history and wishing a deeper knowledge of how people actually lived in this period. This was insightful, intriguing, eye opening, thorough, and scholarly. It brings fascinating facts like none of the numerous books that I have read in my research, from ice-cream in Florence, to weather patterns and cash flow affecting trade, to surprising watercraft and piracy. Trade created Renaissance Europe, which is documented as it evolved. I read it and read it again finding my imagination explode. This trove of information showed me my ignorance of my previous conceptions. You can open the books up just about anywhere, begin to read and find stunning information. I stumbled upon a paperback edition, read it and then bought the hardcover… because it is such a keeper.
⭐Braudel’s Pov is as much about the LAND near the mediterranean as it is about the sea. He explains cultivated & uncultivated lands, crops, who cultivated it, what grows at what altitude, & why this was important to the battles that occurred on the sea. It’s at times dry, but so is a vineyard before it’s planted. Whether it’s grains, wines, hay, or watering systems, he explains this essential economic evolution in great detail.
⭐Interesting book.
⭐I got this used, so I knew it wouldn’t be perfect, but the cover is completely torn apart and it smells like smoke. Definitely not what I was expecting.
⭐This is a must read for any graduate student in history.
⭐good
⭐Very good read. Interesting historical perspective, and very informative.
⭐If you like history you will love this book. I have read other books by this author and am always impressed by what seems to be a different slant on history. It is difficult to actually say how he differs but he just seems to connect written records with so many different elements that he is always a rivoting read. It is of course just my taste but I would recommend you give him a try.
⭐Good edition of classic work.
