Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This trilogy is like the cat that came back. I bought it back in the 1990s, read it, was very impressed, and passed it on to neighbors. About ten years later, I got a hankering to reread it. I read mostly fiction, but this is the kind of fun nonfiction that reads almost like fiction. So I bought it again (at a higher price). After a decade, I figured I was done with it. Lo and behold, I recently got the urge to read it again. These books just don’t grow stale. If you thought capitalism or economics is a boring topic, and the Middle Ages a long way from being relevant, you have to try this set. It’s so engagingly written, and makes everything personal, relevant, and interesting. Everything is connected. You name it, the author knows all about it and ties it into history, commerce, health, art, and daily life. I wish the illustrations were in color rather than black and white, but that’s a minor quibble.

⭐I’m just beginning the second volume of this three-volume work — the material and economic fundamentals of peoples of the world; the limits of the possible; population and economy through these four centuries. Who knew these things could be so engrossing? It’s certainly not names, dates, battles, empires and kings. It’s about the way people lived, their food, clothing, houses, health, their constant work, lifeways Braudel covers the world, as far as extremely wide reading in his field can cover it: after all, not much is known of China, Russia and many other areas between the 15th and 18th centuries. These are the centuries that mark the long, slow, inevitable movement from changeless tradition, the “ancien regime”, through growth of towns, cities, and on to our capitalistic, business-oriented, present modern world-market..The author shows how population demographics drive change, and how it came about that western Europe was moved forward in growth and innovation.

⭐Great book and excellent transaction! Thanks kindly!

⭐Braudel’s extensive research is engagingly written and filled with references to individuals alive during the time periods covered with extensive allusions to art and literary figures. A must read!
