Montgomery, (2006 then digital printing in 2010); 248 pp. Hopefully you will have access to the “Look Inside” feature for this book. This book is composed of six articles written by Prof. Schoeler that have been translated from German into English. These articles explore various styles of poetry writing in the early era of Islam (c. 550-700 C.E.). The author reviews commentary from other researchers in trying to analyze the `correct’ meaning of various old-Arabic words & sentences that occur in several poems. This is not a line-by-line analysis of 20 or so poems, but a review from several different perspectives as to what semi-ambiguous words may mean – and how that impacts the poem. They analysis early Arabic books such as: Abuy Ubayd’s “al-Garib al-musannaf” (The Book of Uncommon [Vocabulary], Arraigned Systematically), and other works. While Schoeler reviews some of the old Arabic grammar regarding dictation, desinential inflection, edda poetry, skald poetry, etc., this is not a book about Arabic grammar. It pertains more to various types of poetry: cadence, rhyme & rhythm, etc. Schoeler also discusses isnad: how ahadith was transmitted through various tribesmen. Schoeler discusses the issue as to whether or not the Muslim prophet Muhammad wanted his own, personal comments to be written down by scribes; Schoeler presents several informative charts outlining the isnad-chain history of several of “al-insan al-kamil’s” statements. A very scholarly work, primarily for the poet enthusiast, or anyone interested in the grammar issues of early Arab poetry: “diwan al-`arab”. Allahu alam.
