⭐I was hesitant to get this book due to a number of less than stellar reviews and ratings, but after reading it – I am more than satisfied. This is such a nice read, and the story is so unique – I am sad that it has come to an end. This took me away from the real world, and into one that was truly enchanting. I wish Kiera Cass would do a follow-up, a prequel of sorts, or even a book filled with different stories of the other characters in the original book (like what she did with The Selection characters). I’m not ready to say goodbye, yet.I love YA stories, even if I am not the target market (I’m in my late 30s as of this review, with 3 beautiful sons and no daughter to pass on this unhealthy obsession). As such, I have read a number of similarly themed stories, and none has given me enough of an excitement to rate immediately on Amazon, save for this book.Kiera Cass, if you read this – please tell us more. I pray your muse gives you more stories to share to this world that is always in need of more magic. Thank you.

⭐** spoiler alert **I just…oh, boy.Okay, I felt like this could have been a total knockout. First of all, the concept and plot are cool as hell: a book about sirens serving the Ocean but one of them meets a mortal and wants to go rogue? Yes.I’m a fairytale lover. Retellings, originals, you name it, I’m all over it. I walked into a bookstore, saw this GORGEOUS cover (seriously one of the best I’ve seen- it’s stunning) and after some quick research on Amazon’s reviews, picked it up.I’ll say right off the bat I think Kiera Cass is a fine writer. This is my first book I’ve read by her and I’ve heard The Selection series is great. I’m interested in that- I’ll be reading it later.However. This book is scattered. It’ll jump from one major problem in the novel to another quite abruptly and for this reader, it was unsettling. You’ll have a couple of scenes with the love interest- who you meet for five seconds and are expected to believe it’s the greatest love ever- and then it jumps to how she’s depressed and how her “sisters” will take care of her. Sisters who, by the way, we do not see the bond until the middle and end of the novel. I’m disappointed in that, because that would’ve been a cool story arc if it was handled correctly.My biggest complaint is the relationship between Kahlen and Akinli- these two uniquely named (for no reason) characters have a total of less than three days together. Even The Little Mermaid had more time than that, and she was under a strict contract. Kahlen spends A. Date. with Akinli and develops major depressive episodes when she’s not near him.But guess what! Technically, she CAN visit him as long as she’s away from water! Although in Kiera Cass’s world, you have to SEVERELY suspend your disbelief about the water thing. Kahlen goes to great lengths to steal snowboots (drying on a porch in winter, which made no sense but that’s the least of this book’s problems) to keep her from having a connection to the Ocean, but there was mention of showers and baking. You’re going to need to wash those mixing bowls, Kahlen. I found myself wondering if tap water was filtered enough so that the all powerful Ocean couldn’t reach her if she was drinking tap water and baking, but I threw that out the window along with my time.There were some really good points which made me keep reading. I loved the Padma story angle. LOVED it. And Aisling, who was the most interesting character in the book. But since we see her 7% of the time, it’s a total let down. The book should’ve been about her, because her story is fantastic. I loved the character of the Ocean too, but about 2/3 of the way in, the traits shifted. Since it’s the Ocean and therefore inconsistent, I’ll allow it, but I don’t think it was intentional. I think the writer was just doing it to fit her plot.I felt like the end of the book should have been in the middle for the story’s sake. Kahlen being ill? That was waaaayyyyy at the end and felt completely rushed. That concept of being two joined souls is fascinating and should’ve been elaborated on. I felt like a lot of the book had great pieces but were in the wrong place. That’s something an editor should’ve helped correct.I’m glad her very first book got a chance to be printed and revamped. I am. I think it’s awesome she gives major props to her fans for getting this made.But since it was revamped and redone, I just think someone would’ve told her how implausible most of this book was. It could have been terrific and I’m mourning what could’ve been.Ms. Cass and her readers, please, please don’t take this the wrong way. This wasn’t for me, but I really think it could’ve been and that’s why I’m disappointed.

⭐As the saying goes: “Nothing beats the original.”It’s not that the new version changed too much, it’s that it removed too much. Entire powerful and important scenes from the original were reduced to mere mentions in the new.Nearly ever aspect of the story was more fleshed out in the original. We got to see what Akinli does for a living, a better look at his family and the small town of Port Clyde, and more insight into the individual lives and families of the other Sirens. Even the ocean itself felt more Gody, more like the omnipotent being that she is.Kahlan and Akinli’s brief run-in with each other on the beach wasn’t just great foreshadowing, it made sense within the context of their own personal stories prior to their actual meeting. Again, the context of the meeting was mentioned new version, but never explored. In the original, Kahlan and Akinli spent much more time together doing a variety of different things, which led to their love for each other being much more convincing ❤️.Interestingly, there was a moment in the new version that felt like the approach of a film adaptation, where it took 2 scenes from the original and combined them into 1. When Akinli hears Kahlan’s voice for the first time, and when he almost gets taken by the ocean were originally completed separate scenes, and each was more impactful because of it. (Not to say that is method is always best, but in this case, they needed their individual moments to shine.)I didn’t really care for the new ending with the mysterious illness, maybe it’s from having read the original, but it felt very out of place. While the original may have been little more cheesy as it was more in line with a traditional happily-ever-after ending, it felt more grounding and had more finality to it.I put off reading this book because, having read the original, I didn’t really feel the need to. I decide to finally really read it for the soul purpose of comparing the two. And with that, I have now read every Kiera Cass book. And I can’t help but wonder, is Kiera Cass getting worse as time goes on? The original version of The Siren and the first 3 entries in The Selection Series were great and I wouldn’t change a thing . But her latter books, the ending to The Selection and her new series (see my review of The Betrothed & review of The Betrayed) have been a dramatic decline .

⭐Kiera’s Cass’s first book, self-published way before “The Selection” series became such a phenomenal success, is a unique spin on the the sirens from Greek mythology as well as being a love story. I was lucky enough to read the original version and found that one to be full of character conflict and an interesting perspective on the mythology of the sirens of the sea. This new release version focuses more on the love story and left me wanting to go re-read the original again so I could have that one fresh in my mind. However, readers of the The Selection series and fans of romance will likely love this one. Librarians will be pleased that Cass did not resort to profanity and sexual content and yet writes in a style that will appeal to YA readers.

⭐Very very disappointed with this book. Was a major fan of the Selection series, which was the reason why I had pretty high expectations for this. Forced my self to read up to the 15th chapter and then gave up. Found the plot fairly boring, the characters a bit flat , and the romance in the book escalated TOO quickly, which made it feel very unrealistic.

⭐Honestly, this book is beautiful. There doesnt seem to be many directions you can go with mermaids storys, but this was written with such unique and imaginative character structure, it’s beyond me to describe why.The background of why the sirens become and do what they do is such a perfect twist on most mermaids literature, since you never hear the when and why or how in other mermaids myth story’s.The imagination to this story is flawless, usually I can’t stand the love and unrequited love aspects in books but this had a equal amount of romance and didn’t centre around the male element too much.The fact that some individuals didn’t enjoy this amazes me, but everyone has their opinion no matter how much I could go on about the sweetness of The Siren.I say if a story sounds interesting and reads great in the sample, you should ignore the negative feedback.I read this book before there was any feedback and ignorantly thought I could get away not leaving a review, but I can’t let such great imagination get underlooked by a few negative comments, even though I’m sure many people have read and enjoyed this as much as me – but have simply thought not to give their view afterwards.But for me, I’d make everyone read it if I could, it’s simple, sweet, unique and gives you a wary of respect for the sea.

⭐I wanted to love this book as much as I loved The Selection series, however, it fell too flat for me.I couldn’t get into the love story or the characters, I think though this is because I wanted a series. Everything developed and happened to quickly while I wanted to see the characters and love story burn and grow more.The writing is still wonderful as are the descriptions and I still love Kiera’s writing style, but I think this needed to be a series.

⭐Completely hooked on the boom read it within the day I got it. I love the characters khalen she is so human and she thinks she is so flawed but she isn’t and akinli is one of the sweetest guy. No wonder she fell in love with him. I would too we need more guys like this. I am,not too sure about ocean she seems like a very over protective mother and she punished kahlen so harshly my heart hurt with her. Keira Cass is one of my most favourite authors she has so much depth her books I can’t wait for the crown but this was a great on between book between the wait.
