Description

Five years ago, the mysterious and inscrutable head of Effective Engineering Solutions, Eli Glinn, led a mission to recover a gigantic meteorite–the largest ever discovered–from a remote island off the coast of South America. The mission ended in disaster when their ship, the Rolvaag, foundered in a vicious storm in the Antarctic waters and broke apart, sinking-along with its unique cargo-to the ocean floor. One hundred and eight crew members perished, and Eli Glinn was left paralyzed.

But this was not all. The tragedy revealed something truly terrifying: the meteorite they tried to retrieve was not, in fact, simply a rock. Instead, it was a complex organism from the deep reaches of space.
Now, that organism has implanted itself in the sea bed two miles below the surface-and it is growing. If it is not destroyed, the planet will be doomed. There is only one hope: for Glinn and his team to annihilate it, a task which requires Gideon’s expertise with nuclear weapons. But as Gideon and his colleagues soon discover, the “meteorite” has a mind of its own-and it has no intention of going quietly…

User’s Reviews

Review “Preston & Child take all of the various elements from classic horror and sci-fi films and novels and spin them together to write what begins as an action adventure, but soon delves into paranoid terror … scary good fun.”―Associated Press”The always sensational duo is back with a work that is as exciting and intriguing as it is fast-paced.”―Suspense Magazine”Relentless mayhem … [a] thrill-a-minute read. Science fiction as action adventure, the sort of book primed for screen treatment.”―Kirkus Reviews”Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child are no strangers to breaking new ground, but the shovel they use for the beautifully conceived BEYOND THE ICE LIMIT is tipped with gold. Forget thrill on every page – this book seems to have one in every paragraph, starting with “That thing is growing again. We must destroy it.”….BEYOND THE ICE LIMIT is pure fun, its wildly imaginative premise and take-no-prisoners plotting making this reading entertainment of the highest order.”―Providence Sunday Journal”The Lost Island, the third novel to feature master thief and brilliant scientist Gideon Crew, is another clever and compelling tale from Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child….The stellar writing that readers expect from Preston and Child is still in abundance, and they balance the line between page-turning suspense and ancient history.”―Associated Press on The Lost Island”Sparkling…Gideon refreshingly doesn’t fit the superhero mold, and the enigmatic Amy is more than his equal in daring and intelligence.”―Publishers Weekly on The Lost Island”The ever-reliable Doug Preston and Lincoln Child are back with typical aplomb in the splendid The Lost Island. Preston and Child have been in the business of keeping secrets for years now and simply no one’s better at knowing just how long to keep them… wildly entertaining and lightening paced… impossible to put down.”―Providence Sunday Journal on The Lost Island”When it comes to novels by this famous duo, the things all readers can expect are excitement, intrigue, and a story that will not soon be forgotten…The ‘Crew’ stories move at a super-fast pace and never leave the reader wanting…[This is] yet another perfectly unforgettable Preston & Child creation.”―Suspense Magazine on The Lost Island”The action zigzags like an out-of-control rocket toward a double-deceptive conclusion.”―Kirkus Reviews on Gideon’s Corpse”Gideon, an engaging fellow from the get-go, lives up to his initial promise, demonstrating an intelligence and resourcefulness that should endear him to adventure fans.”―Booklist on Gideon’s Corpse”Like Michael Crichton, Preston and Child weave their stories at a thrilling pace…Preston and Child never fail to entertain. And Gideon’s Corpse is a thriller that ranks high among their many co-authored offerings to date.”―BookReporter.com”A rollicking tour-de-force. The eponymous Gideon Crew would be equally comfortable smack in a Ludlum tempest or striding onto the set of the Ocean’s Eleven franchise. Preston and Child have crafted an electrifying, riveting thriller on which I could continue to heap praise, but instead I will just offer this: Read the book! And we can all look forward to the next appearance of Mr. Gideon Crew in the not-so-distant future.”―David Baldacci on Gideon’s Sword”Fast-paced and action-packed, Gideon’s Sword is a clever, high velocity read.”―Kathy Reichs

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ I’ve read almost all of Preston and Child’s books, and I can honestly say this their absolute worst. Don’t know if it’s because they wrote this primarily at the insistent behests of their fans who demanded a sequel to Ice Limit, but this was truly a lame effort. Beyond the Ice Limit is like a book version of a C- level horror film. Just really bad. Too much repetitive emphasis on the utterly stupid concept of the humans trying to escape the fate of these electronic worms who were doing the bidding of the apparently animated and malevolent meteorite (That, by itself, was a pretty stupid concept). It would have been so much more interesting if they’d tied the work of the meteorite hunter character to the nature and presence of the big meteorite siting at the bottom of the ocean, but no… He ended up being a more tangential character who could have played a much bigger role in the plot development, but didn’t. Cabinet of Curiosities is my favorite of all the P&C books. Beyond the Ice Limit paled so badly in comparison that it may as well have been written by a first time writer with a high school level of writing and research skills. Lame from start to finish. This book was just pitiful. I had to force myself to finish reading it. P&C should be ashamed of this book. Their worst “effort” by far.

⭐ What the heck? Who wrote this? It did not feel like a Preston/Douglas novel.POSSIBLE SPOILER…….Firstly the concept of these worms were not very well thought out. I mean, if they crawl up your nose, why not block or hold your nostrils shut so they can’t get in there. There was never any mention about them crawling in to any other orifices. Nose seems to be it then blocking nostrils should work. Making a hole through your sinuses and crawling up to situate themselves between the dura and the brain and Then have people walking around like nothing happened. Yeah…. NO! Not very believable. That somehow people were controlled by these worms… Again NO! Can’t suspend disbelief about these worms.Secondly this idea of no sleep and dispensing stimulants. It would be a lot more logical to sleep in shifts. One sleeps and another one watches to make sure no worms crawl up the sleeping person’s nose. And again, block the nostrils!Thirdly why kill of characters in each book? This is not Game of Thrones. Keep the characters and build on them.I could continue but there were so many things wrong that I would be here typing on my Kindle all evening. Instead I will simply say that this was Not a good book!

⭐ This review is from: Beyond the Ice Limit: A Gideon Crew Novel (Gideon Crew Series Book 4) (Kindle Edition)BEYOND THE ICE LIMIT: A GIDEON CREW NOVEL is the unusual sequel to THE ICE LIMIT. Unusual in that instead of following closely on the heels of its predecessor, this one took Preston and Child 16 years to publish. Also unusual in that it is subtitled a Gideon Crew Novel even though Gideon Crew did not exist when the first novel appeared. I have avoided the Gideon Crew novels up to now due to mixed reviews, but having just read and greatly enjoyed THE ICE LIMIT, thought I’d give this one a try. I’m still not sure about Gideon Crew who plays a fairly large role here, but is not well described or fleshed out. The same is not true for the crew of THE ICE LIMIT, all of whom (that is all of whom survived) are back and play major roles in this sequel. Finally, BEYOND THE ICE LIMIT is an unusual sequel in its being completely self-contained: it works as well as a stand alone novel as it does as a sequel to THE ICE LIMIT.Eli Glinn and EES charter another ship to return to the far South Atlantic because the meteorite that is not a meteorite that they retrieved from Isla Desolacion is growing, and poses a clear and present danger. So Glinn and crew return to destroy the thing before it gets any larger. The sci-fi angle is clearer in this sequel as it becomes clear that the red meteorite is somehow alive. And the tension ratchets up a few notches as the sci–fi veers off into horror territory about three quarters of the way through, and once again it looks like the infallible Eli Glinn has badly underestimated the difficulty of this project and many deaths result.Typical tight Preston and Child prose and pacing and and interesting idea are somewhat diminished by an ending that feels both rushed and if not deus ex machina, at the least not playing fair with the audience. Despite this, it was an enjoyable read, and if you have read aTHE ICE LIMIT, I’m pretty sure you are going to want to read this.Recommended.JM Tepper

⭐ Where to begin? Gideon Crew, former thief and nuclear weapon specialist has been brought into another EES mission by Eli Glinn- the mission that has obsessed Glinn since his Ice Limit disaster. They have to go back to the Antarctic and find the Thing unleashed by the meteor- the Alien seed- and destroy it before it destroys this planet. The expedition of EES scientists and mission specialists starts innocuously enough, reminding me a little of The Abyss. The crew and scientists each go about their tasks, and it almost feels like Crew is going to get through this mission without a hitch- sail to the Antarctic, drop the nuke, kill the thing sprouting from the ocean. But it turns out the creature has a “mind” of its own and the mission begins to spiral out of control.I really love the way Preston and Child tell a story with the tension building until you feel like you’re going to explode. This one was no different. I think it’s time for me to download book 5.

⭐ What did I miss here? Since we are easily the most destructive life form on earth, it boggled my mind that this alien plant-like being hiding inside the world’s biggest meteorite had come here to simply steal our brains — did I get that right? — in order to what? Wouldn’t it have been smarter for the alien seed to have quietly bided it time. If it considered us a threat, it only had to wait a couple of hundred years for us to vanish. If it is a tree-like life form (Baobabs live 6,000 yrs.) then why would it necessarily be destructive at all? So good ol’ Gideon nukes it and barely makes it back to civilization alive … Then there is a final meeting with Glinn and everybody at EES where a mysterious recording of some kind has been found (where? How?). The brilliant scientists play it and it reduces them to a state of deep transcendence or heightened awareness. Where did this artifact come from? From the seed that has just been nuked? So I was left perplexed. I love Preston & Child’s books (especially Pendergast) but I didn’t get this one unless the highly intelligent brain worms were some kind of clue to our subsequent evolution.

⭐ I LOVE Preston and Child however recently they’ve done this weird foray into romance writing. Towards the end of the Ice Limit, they incorporated some romance, which felt awkward and out of place. I was eager to read the sequel, but am extremely disappointed that the beginning of the novel again delves into awkward romantic territory, in a forced and out of context manner. It makes me not want to continue on reading. I’ve read so many of their books, and what makes them great is the historical, archaeological, and pharmacological references. I’ve learned so many interesting things reading their books, I don’t need to read about an awkward boob grab. If I want that, I’ll pick up a trashy romance novel.

⭐ For such a long wait I expected more. If you don’t read any Science Fiction then this will probably blow your mind. Otherwise, it seemed to me very derivative, with a paint by numbers plot and a storyline that was simply dragging around too much baggage for its own good. And I say all of this as a fan of Preston and Child… I have signed books! I just expect more quality.

⭐ I truly enjoyed another story about Gideon Crew. I just wish you wouldn’t keep us guessing about if he’s will be healed the same as his boss. As always the story was inventive, exciting and kept me guessing until the end. I truly enjoy 99% of the characters, no there is not one I dislike. I believe I have read every single novel with this “hero” along with the Pendergast and the stand alones. Thank you for providing me with countless hours of reading enjoyment and a double thank you for releasing the novels in actual print. I truly enjoy having a real book in my hand that you can use a non-PC generated bookmark. I have read your books in hard back, paperback and e-books, I still tend to like real books to all the other options, the advantage to the e-books is there is almost unlimited storage on your devices and they are easily stored. Thank you again. Cassandra Moyer

⭐ Like many other fans, I have waited for years for a sequel to the superb “Ice Limit”, a novel which manages to turn the ENTIRE STORY inside out with the very last sentence. It’s a masterpiece. And I grant that a masterpiece is hard to write a sequel to, and I don’t envy Preston and Child the job. But this much-anticipated sequel fell a little flat. The science is good, the characterizations spot on (I love Gideon), but the ending is a let down. It reads like half a story, with the next part to come. While the original “Ice Limit” begged for a sequel, it was complete in and of itself, so it satisfied the reader’s need for a conclusion. But the ending of “Beyond the Ice Limit” is disappointingly thin. If you’ve been waiting as long as I have for this, you’ll be grateful it’s here, but you’ll wish there was more depth to it.

⭐ Normally I give any book written by Preston andor Child a five star rating, but this one was tough to get through. I read “The Ice Limit” years ago and loved it, but the sequel was not up to par with the original. I don’t think I would ever hire Eli Glinn to plan and execute any engineering project. That man has the most incredible case of “Murphy’s Law” I have ever seen. Anything and everything goes wrong on this expedition! The story goes on and on and on and I was beginning to think it would just end abruptly and a third Ice Limit novel would be forthcoming to wrap things up. Next time leave well enough alone.
