Description
Famous for the number-theoretic first-order statement known as Goodstein’s theorem, author R. L. Goodstein was also well known as a distinguished educator. With this text, he offers an elementary treatment that employs Boolean algebra as a simple medium for introducing important concepts of modern algebra. The text begins with an informal introduction to the algebra of classes, exploring union, intersection, and complementation; the commutative, associative, and distributive laws; difference and symmetric difference; and Venn diagrams. Professor Goodstein proceeds to a detailed examination of three different axiomatizations, and an outline of a fourth system of axioms appears in the examples. The final chapter, on lattices, examines Boolean algebra in the setting of the theory of partial order. Numerous examples appear at the end of each chapter, with full solutions at the end.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I find that this book explains both the principles and mindset of relationships and objects very well. My intent in purchasing this book was to gain a fundamental understanding of these principles as a foundation for relational database design. I believe my efforts to build a database and construct queries will be rewarded with the better grasp of the Boolean building blocks.
⭐Decent book.
⭐Boolean algebra, the algebra of 2 variables is essential for integrated circuit comprehension and design. This is a fine introduction. Worthwhile even for the non-novice as a review.
⭐Everything worked out perfect with this order.
⭐Nice book
⭐The problem with this book is that it is “an unabridged republication of the 1966 printing of the work” – so if like me you were expecting a book published in 2007 you may be disappointed. The typeface and layout are very old, no colour, few diagrams, and the presentation is lacking clear titles, boxes to explain important points etc and all theother things you’d expect from a modern book. The very formal way the maths is presented appealed to me as I have a mathematical background, but is very theoretical, which I think will alienate most readers.I bought the book as I was interested in Boolean with relation to computer animation – considering how old the book really is (not how old it claims to be!!) it is not surprising that I failed to find any parts relating to my particular interest. Disappointing.
⭐This must be one of the very few books on the basics of set theory/boolean algebra, that can be understood by anyone with only a moderate level of ability. The material is presented in an easy to follow style without the useof excessive algebraic Proofs, when a simple explanation is all you arelooking for.I recommend it to anyone who finds the usual undergraduate level books on this subject to difficult to follow.
⭐Good library addition in the mathematics grouping
⭐A clear and succinct exposition of basic concepts.
⭐Ben focalizzato, lineare ed esaustivo.Adatto a chi ne vuole sapere di più e a chi ha bisogno semplicemnte di un testo di riferimento a cui attingere.
