Submissive to her father’s will, Lady Leta of Aiven travels far to meet a prospective husband she neither knows nor loves–Lord Alistair, future king of the North Country.
But within the walls of Gaheris Castle, all is not right. Vicious night terrors plague Lord Alistair to the brink of insanity. Whispers rise from the family crypt. The reclusive castle Chronicler, Leta’s tutor and friend, possesses a secret so dangerous it could cost his life and topple the North Country into civil war.
And far away in a hidden kingdom, a fire burns atop the Temple of the Sacred Flame. Acolytes and priestesses serve their goddess to the limits of their lives and deaths. No one is safe while the Dragonwitch searches for the sword that slew her twice…and for the one person who can wield it.

Who Will Dare to Face the Dragonwitch? Submissive to her father’s will, Lady Leta of Aiven travels far to meet the future King of the North Country and a prospective husband she neither knows nor loves. But within the walls of his castle, all is not right. Vicious night terrors plague Lord Alistair. Whispers rise from the family crypt. The reclusive castle Chronicler, Leta’s tutor and friend, possesses a secret so dangerous it could cost his life and topple the entire nation. And far away in a hidden kingdom, a flame burns atop the Citadel of the Living Fire. Acolytes and priestesses serve their goddess to the limits of their lives and deaths. No one is safe while the Dragonwitch searches for the sword that slew her twice…and for the hero who can wield it.”Stengl’s characteristic humor, inventiveness, and verve catalyze a slight plot in the fifth installment of the Tales of Goldstone Wood (after Starflower). Alistair, the red-headed heir of Earl Ferox of Gaheris, is contemplating a loveless marriage and wrestling with prophetic nightmares. He’d like to be a hero through deeds of derring-do, but his mother wants him to play politics and become king. He sees his intended, Lady Leta, as insipid because he can’t understand having a passion for books and ideas. It’s the stuff of second-rate romance, but there are larger issues brewing. Ancient legends are stirring. A dangerous gate is forming between the worlds of faeries and mortals. Alistair’s dreams portend a threat big enough for any hero, with room for a cranky misshapen librarian, an urchin, and a certain blithe cat-man. The story stands alone, though favorite characters from the earlier books have cameos large and small. New readers will find much to charm them, and fans will enjoy the epic yet quirky adventure they have come to anticipate” –Publishers Weekly –This text refers to the paperback edition. ⭐ The Tales of Goldstone Wood are set a rich, well structured fantasy world. It is an extraordinary series, but you do not have to read it in any particular order. (It came out in a certain order, but there is flexibility in the author’s approach.) There are not multiple parts which leave you hanging until the grand finale in a final book. Each book is fairly self-contained, a story mainly from one character’s viewpoint. These characters may show up in minor roles in other books. To revisit this world through several different perspectives makes it all the more interesting and realistic. You comprehend all the people in the series, and their interpersonal connections, better. The setting is your main constant.
⭐ I first “entered” Goldstone Wood through reading “A Branch of Silver A Branch of Gold.” It was a phenomenal book. Anne Stengel has a gift for creating complex characters and stories. A good example is the Dragon Witch herself. It’s hard to hate her, and I don’t want to give away too much, but you will probably want to weep by the end of this book. The Dragon Witch is both one of the most complex, and yet easily understood characters in Goldstone Wood; she is so complex her full story took two books to tell.I recommend reading Starflower, before you read this book, it will make more sense. So far, I have read “Heartless” “Starflower” and “Dragon Witch” while I have been waiting for another story about Heloise and the Family of Night, written about in “Branch of Silver Branch of Gold”Anne’s books are interconnected, and should be read in order, to understand the complex plots and characters.
⭐ This is probably the best series I have read in my entire life. No joke. And this book was AMAZING. I had a really hard time getting into the first book in this series, “Heartless.” I got the rest of the series on sale, and could not put them down. I want to go back and read the first one again to see if it really was difficult to read, or if I had to get used to her writing style. I cannot wait until the next book is released. I love how she weaves all of the different story lines and plots together, and, so far, I have not noticed any discrepancies. Incredible for a series with this much detail. If you love fantasy, suspense, or just really good literature, I HIGHLY recommend this book (and series.) Thank you, Ms. Stengl, for another incredible read.
⭐ Once again Stengl manages to tell fairy tales with incredible realism. Her characters are deep, conflicted, rarely beautiful, and they respond in such incredibly realistic ways to the events in these tales. You should know that even though the novel is a fairy story, it isn’t any traditional fairy tale that you would know. Stengl creates a completely unique world and weaves an incredible tale from the complex characters she spins.I would recommend this novel to someone looking for a mind bending novel or a brand new fairy tale. Despite the circumstances and the worlds that Stengl creates, the responses of these characters is remarkably realistic.if to have enjoyed her other novels, you will enjoy this one, too. It isn’t necessary to read them in order, but doing so does clarify a few things about character interactions and the world Stengl creates.
⭐ Me, my husband, and my 8 yr old son come together almost every night to read this series. Not only is it extremely family friendly, but it has kings, queens, princes, princesses, dragons, goblins, dwarves, faeries, and so much more exciting fantasy! These are books great for the young and old! We are so sad we have to wait till the end of January for the next book! LOL We just might be Ms. Stengl’s biggest fans! 🙂
⭐ I was unsure how this book fit in with the first four of this story but it starts to make sense about half way through. I am not a fantasy reader but I am hooked on these books! I love how they all tie in together. Fantastic read but please read the others in the series first to fully understand what’s going on. I am a huge fan!
⭐ As a long-time fan, I am thrilled by Stengl’s ability to astound with each new book! ‘Dragonwitch’ continues the glorious, rich story of Goldstone Wood with the author’s customary charm, wit, and flair for the dramatic! I couldn’t help squeaking through the terrors and crying at the end (which is a great compliment to her writing, as I rarely get that involved in a book)! Stengl’s characters capture my heart every time, and I can’t wait for the next novel! For any fans of literature that makes you laugh and forces you to think – this is a MUST buy. 🙂
⭐ Well-written, not smarmy, Stengl is a master storyteller whose works bear more than one reading. She is to me the most impressive of modern fantasy writers, interweaving timeless truths with dark and bright fantastic threads that set a fresh perspective on what should never become stale, but somehow has managed to in the cynical dust of our day.
⭐ Excellent product and service. Will use again.
⭐ great book.
