Description

Inspector Zhang of the Singapore Police Force is called in to what appears to be an open and shut case. A young woman has been killed during a burglary. The fingerprints on the murder weapon point to a well-known house-breaker. And his bite marks are on the victim’s arm. But the burglar has a cast-iron alibi because at the time of the murder he was in police custody.

The Deputy Commissioner wants Inspector Zhang to find out how the burglar managed to get out of the locked cell – but that is easier said than done and the mystery puts the inspector’s deductive skills to the test.

This is a short story, just over 9,000 words, equivalent to about 30 pages. A perfect read if you have half an hour or so to kill.

⭐ A good “Perfect alibi” story- you know, where the body is found in a locked room with now way in or out and no hidden passages…an impossible situation for a detective to solve. But, the clever way the writer devises the story, the intrepid Detective Zhang eventually figures it all out. A very good sleuthing story, somewhat entertaining. It would have taken five stars but, I found it a bit too contrived and stretched. You will like it for the sheer inventiveness, though. Well worth the cost.

⭐ I just love his books and short stories, a very talented writer and his plats are really interesting. If you read only 1 new author read this guy.

⭐ Very clever, a fun read. Most enjoyable. A mystery worthy of Poirot himself. Love Leather’s writing and style, definitely a new fan.

⭐ A good way to spend an hour

⭐ All the Inspector Zhang short stories is well written, i enjoyed each and every one of them. The Inspector is quite a character, dont miss out on the entire series

⭐ The Inspector Zhang short stories are so well written. Good plots, interesting characters and just what one would expect from the author.

⭐ … by using ‘ze small, gray zells’.Recently I have made a very nice, new acquaintance: Detective Inspector Zhang, Singapura Police Force. He is a well-educated, polite gentleman of the old-fashioned kind. And he resolves his crimes – always to do with a closed room – the way that clearly reminds me of Monsieur Poirot – whom he admits to adore …Effective, with his female sidekick Sergeant Lee, he strikes when the culprit feels himself yet on the sure side. And he makes it with the help of ‘ze small grey zells’, just as Mons. Poirot used to say. This time we are very near at the perfect crime.A murder and a suspect who seems to have a perfect alibi. But the evidence points at him, and at him only.A mystery worth of those little grey cells our good Inspector Zhang is so proud of.And – as always – he finds his way to nail the culprit.Stephen Leather is THE great Britisch contemporary thriller writer! Before he began to write full-time in 1992, he was for over 10 Years a journalist who wrote for ‘The Times, ‘The Daily Mail’ and the ‘South China Morning Post’ in Hongkong. He is also valued one of the most acclaimed connaisseurs of the Far East and the author of numerous bestsellers all around the globe.

⭐ This is another short story in the Inspector Zhang series. In this one the Inspector has to solve the mystery of a woman killed in cold blood. The perpetrators finger prints are on the murder weapon and where he bit the victim, his bite marks match dental records. The only problem is the perpetrator has the perfect alibi, he was in jail at the time of the murder. Can the Inspector solve the mystery? This is the second Inspector Zhang story I have read and I have to say I think he’s great! He is the Inspector they turn to when things don’t appear so cut and dried. His hero is Sherlock Holmes, and he approaches his cases in the same methodical manner. This case seemed to be tied up perfectly but Inspector Zhang got to the bottom of it by eliminating the impossible and whatever remained, however improbable had to be the truth! Well done Stephen, another great little mystery. Just right for reading before bedtime or on a lunch break. May there be many more.

⭐ This is another locked room mystery in the author’s series of short stories featuring Inspector Zhang and his assistant Sergeant Lee. Based in Singapore, Zhang is called in to solve the impossible mystery of a woman supposedly murdered by Mr Yip, who was incarcerated in a police cell at the time Miss Chau was killed. There is compelling evidence pointing towards Yip’s guilt – fingerprints on the murder weapon and his dental records match the bite mark on her arm.I find Stephen Leather has an amazing skill at capturing the attention of his readers; this tale is, as always, well written and it gently led me to the conclusion of the story as Inspector Zhang came up with the solution to the riddle. It takes about an hour to read and certainly provided me with an oasis of calm and tranquility. Hopefully there are more in the pipeline.

⭐ It’s always such great fun reading an Inspector Zhang short story from Stephen Leather. I have read all five of them now and hope there will be more forthcoming.
