⭐P.D. Ouspensky covers all areas of thought. He is able to create a response from you by the information he provides. He challenges your thinking on every subject you only thought you knew a great deal about. He was a profoundly deep thinker, and a remarkable writer. He, for instance, explained the Fourth Dimension as a cube. You know, the cube (square) I’m sure many of us have drawn with a pencil on a piece of paper. He writes, “From the fourth dimension it must be possible to see the cube from all its sides at once and from within as though from its center.” Then he challenges the reader to see this clear-shaped cube turning slowing in mid-air. One can see all four sides of the cube, and see right through it. He challenges his reader to continue “to imagine further the properties of vision or perception in the fourth dimension.” When you’ve finished this chapter, you, as his reader, clearly see the possibilities of the Fourth Dimension. He is a brilliant writer, thinker, and has an amazing mind .
⭐Ouspensky himself a mathematicianreveals the folly in trusting math tounderstand the real nature of the universe.
⭐I read this 30 or 40 years ago and it changed my life.Or, at least, my perception of reality.Among other things the big O reveals that the “Theory of Natural” selection is a statistical impossibility. And the theory of “protective coloration” is another canard. Ouspensky points out that certain insects that are indistinguishable from the leaves of the bushes they inhabit dry up and change color, when they die, to become indistinguishable from DEAD leaves. He suggest this principle of mimicry is due to some universal creative (artistic?) impulse in nature, not some fictitious “survival of the fittest” paradigm. There are many more revelations in this tome but it’s a long time since I read it. Suffice it to say it proves that much of modern “knowledge” is simplistic pseudo-science. Nonsense with a catchy handle. Like “greenhouse gas” and “man made global warming.”
⭐First book of his I read was In Search of the Miraculous. I bought this book to learn more, and now I want to read his first book Tertium Organum. It seems I’m working backwards rather than forwards through this author’s life, but he is a fascinating writer with rich and compelling stories. Seriously underrated and under-read.
⭐5 stars for New Model of the Universe.Ouspensky’s collected essays are of course among the greastest classics of esoteric philosophy. This kindle edition is not so great though. It contains numerous typos, has poor formatting for Ouspensky’s numerous literary quotes & worst of all omits his drawings & illustrations.I love Ouspensky & I’m fond of kindle. This edition does justice to neither.
⭐If you’re looking for a simple and yet profound explanation of esotericism then this book is for you. Ouspensky explains tarot cards like I’ve never seen, as well as Yoga and the different types of Yoga. Highly recommend it.
⭐I purchased and downloaded the Kindle version to both my Kindle and to my iPad. I found serious formatting flaws with the text. There is only a single paragraph on each page, and sometimes a single sentence, and sometimes a single line of text, two or three words! That makes this a 5,000 page text which is certainly not worth reading under any circumstance. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY ON THE KINDLE VERSION UNTIL OR UNLESS THEY REVISE THE FORMAT of this otherwise excellent book. William Kern
⭐A much more profound accounting of the mysteries of the Universe than you will ever find in academic institutions. This is a work of psychology and cosmology combined.See my reviews of Rodney Collin, Ouspensky and Gurdjieff books (and the movie Meetings with Remarkable Men) in the book section.
⭐This version is only an extract 82 pages long. The full length book is 554 pages long. I did not know this until after it arrived. On this version’s page it does say that it is only 82 pages in length but, not that it is only an extracted article. After receiving it I looked for other versions and eventually found a full-length version -that is the only way I knew – after the fact. This version should explicitly state that this is not the full version on the details page!
⭐A New Model of the Universe’ is, in the opinion of this reviewer, one of the most interesting books ever published and arguably the author’s finest work. The original version was written by Ouspensky in 1914 with a second edition in 1934 and a third in 1938 that appear to include refinements to his ideas subsequent to his time with Gurdjieff. This book is encyclopaedic and covers a wide range of subjects ranging from Esoteric philosophy, Yoga, the nature of dreams and hypnotism and, perhaps most importantly, to the new Physics where the author reveals himself to be a thinker many years ahead of his time. There is an important section on ‘Experimental Mysticism in which Ouspensky recounts his experiences of drug induced higher states of consciousness in which he challenges our everyday common sense view of reality. Elsewhere, he has interesting things to say about the paranormal including clairvoyance, trance states and communication with dead. There is an interesting chapter in which he vividly describes his impressions of such marvels as the Sphinx, the Pyramids and the Taj Mahal encountered during his extensive travels in search for the miraculous. To my mind, the most interesting part of the book is Ouspensky’s views, supplemented with a detailed mathematical explanation, on eternal recurrence, an idea first propounded by Pythagoras and the Buddha. It’s mind blowing stuff.Controversial throughout, the author considers the issue of sex in the last chapter and develops a final thought provoking line of argument in connection with its place in the spiritual evolution of man. This book is by no means an easy read at times but is filled with some of the most original ideas I have ever encountered. I first came across it in my late twenties and, having returned to it in later life, have been astonished to find that it has lost none of its power or relevance to the 21st century — quite the opposite if anything. For those unfamiliar with his background, Peter D Ouspensky was born in Moscow on 5 March 1878 and grew up among the Russian intelligentsia of his day. He became a successful journalist and travelled extensively in both Europe and the United States between 1908 and 1912, during which time he appears to have undergone a profound mystical experience, a sensation so powerful that it was to influence the rest of his life. He rose to celebrity status after his book, a philosophical treatise: `Tertium Organum’ was published in 1912; it became a best seller. His reputation was further enhanced by `A New Model of the Universe’ which appeared in 1914 and a compelling autobiography written as a novel: ‘The Strange Life of Ian Osokin’. In the same year, he realised his ambition to travel to India. Ouspensky seemed intent on finding an esoteric school of `real’ philosophical knowledge and a master teacher. He finally appeared to have succeeded upon returning to Moscow in 1915 where he met up with Gurdjieff.Ouspensky subsequently studied the Gurdjieff System under the latter’s personal supervision for a period of some ten years until 1924 after which they separated when Gurdjieff founded his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man in France. Ouspensky, for his part, set up his own organization in London: The Society for the Study of Normal Psychology which subsequently became known as the Study Society.Chris Allen is a Technical Author and writer with the following books available through Amazon:His latest crime novel:

⭐The Beam of Interest: Taken by Storm

⭐Hypnotic Tales 2013: Some Light Some Dark

⭐Call of the Void: The Strange Life and Times of a Confused Person: 1
⭐This collection of disparate chapters includes many subjects that Ouspensky was interested in and already writing about before he met Gurdjieff, eg. magic, ‘higher dimensions’, eternal recurrence, sacred places, tarot… But this book was actually finally put together after he’d studied with G and entered ‘the 4th way’. So the book is a fascinating mix. On the one hand it’s “Pure Ouspensky” out from under the control of ‘his master’s hand’, writing about anything he likes (and he is always very knowledgeable), but on the other, his thought here is usually enriched and tinged with a certain depth from G’s influence.
⭐Whoops, it’s only Chapter Ten! We all need to read the whole book and this ain’t it (was I misled?) … should have read all the reviews. It’s an amazing work but this chapter is pretty heavy-going for most of us. Avoid this as a place to start in Ouspensky’s greatest writing.
