Description

Pyotr Demianovich Ouspensky was a noted and controversial Russian mystic and esotericist. This book describes the mystical symbolism of the Major Arcana of the Tarot. These esoteric, or divinatory meanings were derived in great part from the writings of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn group, of which Ouspenskii had been a member. The meanings and many of the illustrations showed the influence of astrology as well as Qabalistic principles. Excerpt: “No study of occult philosophy is possible without an acquaintance with symbolism, for if the words occultism and symbolism are correctly used, they mean almost one and the same thing. Symbolism cannot be learned as one learns to build bridges or speak a foreign language, and for the interpretation of symbols a special cast of mind is necessary; in addition to knowledge, special faculties, the power of creative thought and a developed imagination are required. One who understands the use of symbolism in the arts, knows, in a general way, what is meant by occult symbolism. But even then a special training of the mind is necessary, in order to comprehend the “language of the Initiates”, and to express in this language the intuitions as they arise.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I was really enjoying this book–the kindle edition. I was honestly shocked and disappointed when it ended abruptly. I continued pressing the “page forward arrow” several unnecessary times in disbelief. This is a great read. SYMBOLISM OF THE TAROT is a rich story of the Major Arcana. The book contains NO information on the specific cards of the Minor Arcana.

⭐I am, I will admit, a beginner at Tarot. I have just put my first tentative foot upon the long and winding path. And what should I pick up first? Why Ouspenskii’s book “The Symbolism Of The Tarot”!For someone who wants to understand Tarot this is a godsend! He talks about some of the background and then goes over the symbolism of each of the Major Arcana cards in detail. And then he does a wonderful thing and describes each scene on the cards as if he had just come upon it. He paints a “word picture” of the card that goes much deeper, at least for me, than the images themselves do.The reason you might want to read this book is because it might be helpful to understand what the symbols mean on the cards and what the add up to.What this book WILL NOT give you is the divinatory meanings of the cards. If you just want a book with a list of the possible meaning of the cards for your next reading, this isn’t the book for you.But if you want to go deeper into the Tarot… this might be a doorway for you.My only complaint is that it’s a short book. He taught me a lot, went farther than the stuff I read by Waite (admittedly, just the material that came with the cards) and then stopped. I want MORE!Dave2011

⭐As a tool to continue one’s edification on the tarot, Ospensky offers delightful insight. Worth the addition to one’s library.

⭐Analysis of Archetypes that lie beneath consciousness and reality.

⭐Ouspensky could write, he wrote very well: briefly & pointedly. His style have been magical, his parables are expressive. That is why I believe that this small volume is a good tool that comes at the right time at any time.

⭐This book was vague and I felt that it was not revelant to tarot. It was way to philosphical and it left me a feeling of incompleteness and not much understanding of the symbols of tarot.it was almost paganist in nature and detached from trying to understand tarot better. For example, the way we look at the devil card now in reading tarot, the book description was completely opposite in interpreting it for our readings. It referred back to how it was viewed back in old times and did not help me to interpret now. Luckily I only paid $1.00 for it.

⭐Excellent little book by an extremely knowledgeable author.

⭐What it doesn’t have in length is than made up for in depth. Think, and meditate, about what says deeply.

⭐Interesting but not terribly exciting

⭐I was disappointed with this book, I was hoping for a comprehensive volume of the symbolism of the tarot but quite frankly I could have written a better account with only 7 years tarot knowledge. I do feel it was a waste of money; it just sits on the book self and adds to my tarot collection. I downloaded symbolism of tarot from the internet which I find I use more frequently. A nice cover but no content.
