Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐One of my favorite books in my library. Meditation used to be a weakness for me, not any more. Stephan goes through the history of meditation, it’s benefits, and all the different ways to meditate. There is no wrong way to meditate. If you want to go within, this is one of the best books out there about doing it. And that’s really the only goal in life, is to learn to love, and that means going within a connecting with the Higher Self.
⭐This book surprised me mostly because of it being a for “Dummies” edition. This clearly written book is a comprehensive introduction on the subject of meditation and the many types of meditation. Its many meditation exercises that you can do on your own open the doorway to regular practice. The CD was disappointing, not in quality, but because the meditations are not recorded in separate tracks. This makes it is less usable if you want to pick and choose a certain meditation to do with the CD. For that reason, I gave it 4 stars rather than 5. I would still purchase the book even knowing this and would recommend it to anyone interested in getting started with meditation or engaging in a more regular and rewarding meditation practice.
⭐This is one of the best books on meditation. The author is taking a very unbiased approach, and puts a lot of emphasis on the essense of meditation rather than form. He gives a lot of practical advice for beginners and experienced meditators, and shows different methods and techniques, emphasizing that it’s not really the method and technique that matters – choose whatever appeals to you and works for you – what’s important is the personal transformation you go through, the state of mind you reach. He compares different meditations to different pathways up the same mountain of self discovery and inner peace. As a beginner I wanted a book that would step by step explain what meditation is all about, and how I start meditating myself. This is exactly what this book does, and much more!If you then want to go on and read more about any specific tradition/school, or find a technic for a very specific spiritual or other purpose, go ahead! This book opens the door into the wonderful realm of personal understanding and growth. But you don’t have to associate yourself with any religion or school to master the art of meditation and discover the love, joy, compassion and Truth within you, and that’s exactly what this books allows you to do. Wonderful! Wholeheartedly recommended!
⭐I purchased “Meditation for Dummies” several years ago, when I wasn’t really sure just what meditation was or what type of meditation might be best for me – and even now, all these years later, I consider it the best meditation book I’ve purchased to date!Unlike most of the books on meditation out there today – which tend to focus solely on one type – this one covers a wide range of different ways to meditate, including information concerning how that form of meditation came to be & easy step-by-step instructions on how to do it.Through the use of icons, this book is structured in such a way that you can easily find information concerning:1. Brief refreshing meditation exercises2. Things to remember3. Philosophical “musings”4. Tips on how to make your meditations easier & more effective5. Traditional wisdom – wisdom from groups who’ve been meditating for thousands of yearsAlso, depending on where you are in your meditation practice, you can easily find the chapters that deal with:1. What meditation is & other general info.2. How to get started3. Troubleshooting & fine-tuning your meditation practice4. How to use meditation throughout the day5. Answers to the most frequently asked questionsOverall, this book provides you with everything you need to begin &/or expand your meditation practice – and it does so in an easy-to-understand, fun way! I can’t recommend it highly enough!
⭐Fun book with easy explanations to get started with mindfulness
⭐Excellent book and guide for a friend. “You can lead a horse to water” More people could benefit from the practice. So many positive benefits, Mine was pain relief at two different points in my life in addition to relaxation and stress reduction when needed.
⭐I am on my second reading of this book in the past year, and I can’t get enough of the wise and wonderful advice in it. This is my third or fourth attempt at keeping up a regular meditation routine, and I’m in week three of a nightly ritual – thanks to Stephan Bodian. He has really helped guide my practice and feel good about taking the time out of my hectic life for this increasingly important relaxation/reflection time. (I have two toddlers and a full-time job.) Already, I notice the valuable benefits of meditation that he mentions in the book happening in my day-to-day life. For one, I no longer feel the urge to have a glass of wine or a beer every evening to relax. For another, I’m not as impatient and angry as I used to be when my children act up. I can’t recommend this book enough – for anyone and everyone who wants more peace and clarity in their lives.
⭐This book was a required text for a class I took recently. Before reading it, I had discounted the book for some reason. Maybe because it was a ‘dummy’ book. I could not have been more wrong. It is formatted in an easy to read, fun layout. You can choose to get a basic overview of the section, or delve a little deeper. I was surprised at the accuracy and volume of information. Note that this is an excellent resource for a person just starting meditation or for someone who is blocked and needs a little ‘oomph’ to get back on track.
⭐The books of this publisher uses a bit humorous way of writing. Except this, there is too much interesting blah blah on the history and the usage of meditation among with techniques. Very simple low level language tthat is good to a foreigner student.I didnt know that there was also a christian technique
⭐I had hoped this book would focus more on the scientific and medical side of meditation, because I saw an MD as the leading name. Don’t be fooled by this, the book is not by an MD, only the foreword is. This book is still way more new age and hippy-ish than I wanted. Too much focus on religion and spiritual points. I also think there’s actually very little information of substance in this book which is dragged out much more than it has to be. I’ll keep looking for a book that’s more down-to-earth and based on facts rather than something that comes across as a teaching bible for monks.
⭐An excellent read and one of the more important books I have read. It sets meditation within its historical context as a pursuit aimed at exploring (and managing) our inner universe, and one which is every much as vital as exploring and managing the outer universe. It displays a gentle sense of humour and a compassionate regard for the reader. For me it was the first book on meditation that put this process into a context which as a scientist I could appreciate – particularly in terms of what one is seeking to learn (ability to focus, reflect, become aware, manage difficult feelings, etc.) and achieve (health, peace, joy, spiritual awareness). I have an interest in the brain and in the process of managing its emotional part – for me the author clearly explains the advantages of meditation in helping one to do this. As the author shows, meditation is no longer an esoteric pursuit for those we think of as withdrawing from the world but a vital life skill (backed by scientific research) for enabling us to live effectively and joyfully in the world.
⭐This is the first book on meditation I ever bought, and one I continue to return to to this day. Unlike many of the other books I have read, this is straightforward and very practical – using this book alone you can go from knowing nothing about meditation to being able to practice it effectively everyday. I wouldn’t rely on it as my only book on the subject (although having said that, most could practice for years based on this book’s teachings), as other books provide certain insights this one does not. But excellent all the same.
⭐A friend loaned me the first edition of this book as I had mentioned to her that I was thinking about taking up meditation. I read her copy from cover to cover and bought myself the new version. It is so easy to read and I love the fact that the author explains that it is only natural for your mind to wander when meditating and that we will get there eventually! I also like the very relaxed tone and there is a definite feeling of providing advice but to do what works for you. Love the book and I am definitely feeling the benefits of ten minutes of meditation every day!
