Description

Linear algebra is relatively easy for students during the early stages of the course, when the material is presented in a familiar, concrete setting. But when abstract concepts are introduced, students often hit a brick wall. Instructors seem to agree that certain concepts (such as linear independence, spanning, subspace, vector space, and linear transformations), are not easily understood, and require time to assimilate. Since they are fundamental to the study of linear algebra, students’ understanding of these concepts is vital to their mastery of the subject. David Lay introduces these concepts early in a familiar, concrete Rn setting, develops them gradually, and returns to them again and again throughout the text so that when discussed in the abstract, these concepts are more accessible. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The first time I took linear algebra was in community college with no textbook and was heavily reliant on youtube videos from 3blue1brown’s playlist on the subject. This was not helpful, I endured the experience understanding nothing that was being talked about, and got a D in the class. The second time through, this book vastly improved my understanding of everything my linear algebra course covered. The problems correlate to section examples, the diagrams and pictures are highly useful, and the formatting is not painful or confusing to look at. I don’t know if this is the best book I have ever used but it is far better than most. The downside as many reviewers have mentioned is it is very expensive, which is an unfortunate reality of education. I recommend buying this book used or renting to avoid the cost, you’ll be pressed to find anything better.

⭐Overall it is a mediocre math textbook with classic math textbook layout, theorem-proof-example, but the language it used is quite confusing. I mean, not pedantic that kind of confusing, but rather the interchanging of terminologies makes it hard to follow up. Linear algebra this subject has a huge amount of concepts that tell you the same thing from different perspectives and it requires a lot of work to be done by yourself so that you can absorb the concepts and convert from one to the other. Yet this book uses too often different terminologies, even in the same sentence, to explain a simple example without further explanation. So sometimes you need to look back and forth just to understand what he is talking about, which is frustrating. And most of the points are made between examples, without a clear definition before and after the them, which is kind of messy. The major complaint I have for this book is its lack of explanations. Most of the time it just tells you the exact procedure to solve a problem, like the way to perform LU matrix factorization, but fails to explain how to derive it from the knowledge mentioned before. And this book uses a really implicit way to point out the connection of chapters so sometimes when you look back several chapters you will find everything become clear. In addition, notations used in this book are HORRIBLE!! For instance, chapter 4.8 difference equation, if you study by yourself without your instructor’s notes, you will completely get lost in its disastrous way of using notations. I cannot even figure out what is vector, what is sequence and what is scalar. This book adopts nontraditional way to organize the material. Instead of applying the knowledge after fully introducing them, this book first talks about really basic skills and then mixes the most advanced concepts and theorems with real world application and does not tell you how to relate them with previous chapter. Drawback of this approach is it definitely escalates the level of difficulty for students to learn them, but advantage is if you work really hard and once you understand the model, you will master the material. Another complaint I have about this book is it just tell you this is the model and how to solve it but not to mention how to set up the model…So whether this book is good or not, you can make the decision by your own. Some advice to do better using this book:1. fully understand all the basic concepts.2. go through examples carefully and connect them with prior knowledge if you want to know why it is like that.3. if you don’t understand something just refer previous chapters you may find some clues.Good luck to all of you!

⭐I am happy. The book had alot of miscellaneous tape on it, but the content and the quality of the book was excellent. My book is not in front of me, but I do not recall seeing any highlights. I am very happy with my purchase. The only thing that I am kinda still upset about which is not the companies fault is that right before I made my purchased, it immediately switched to where I had to pay for shipping which I still do not think is fair. There were other books that were cheaper, but this is the only company that offered 2 day shipping so I could have my book on that Friday before school started.

⭐Pretty solid textbook. I got this for a linear algebra course in college. Although it is a version behind, it was nearly identical to the 5th edition. Of course the chapter problems are updated with different numbers but the structure of each problem was idential 99% of the time. This was great for practicing problems that my teacher assigned from the newer edition.I’d recommend getting this book over the 5th edition, borrowing a friends book to get the chapter problems, and save a TON of money. Also, if you look around you can find the solutions manual for this textbook that shows in depth solutions to problems.

⭐The text is good for core concepts. Labs using Matlab and study materials/guides need improvement. Older editions can be found as PDFs online for free. Gilbert Strange has his own text, video lectures, etc. I found those quite helpful in ways this textbook lacked. If your school tries to offer this as an eText/eBook, fight to get a hard copy. Amazon rentals with prime are very affordable and the timeframe given to return the book is great. I usually have it sent back a day after finals and a week before it’s due.

⭐Half-way through the semester and this seems to be a decent book. You will definitely want to get the study guide too ISBN 0321388836.The study guide has more “plain English.” I asked a professor/friend why they didn’t just put that in the book, and he said the regular book is expected to be written in a somewhat academic tone of voice. I guess math professors like that.Linear algebra isn’t too bad, the hardest part is grasping some of the abstract concepts and translating them into something I understand. For this my professor friend and the tutoring center help.

⭐I love this book. I have never had a class in linear algebra prior to the one I am taking now and I bought this book to supplement my terrible class required book. This book is so easy to read and gives plenty of visual examples. If you learn visually this would be a good choice. Plus there are a lot application examples which I love. I feel like I need application story problems to understand the topic and this book is loaded with them. I would highly recommend this book for a beginner. I have also heard linear algebra is normally taught in an abstract fashion so this would probably be a good book to read in preparation for taking a formal class if you need illustration or context to understand what your learning. I really can’t say enough good things about this book.

⭐This book is really one of the best algebra books that I have read. It covers the basic aspects of the linear algebra using very clear explanations.I recommend this book as a basic book for a linear algebra course and as a reference book for anyone interested in this field.

⭐The book arrived promptly which was great seeing as I needed it right away. However it was advertised as “new” and the book I received is far from new…Pencil marks and highlighted sections line the book. A more realistic description of the book would have been appreciated!!

⭐Clear and accessible for a mathematics textbook. I don’t use it much, but it is a handy reference for whenever I want clarification on a point presented in lecture.

⭐IT IS PROF EDITION, BUT IT IS ABLE TO USE

⭐Half of your pages are right side up, and upside down! There is no way for me to fix it, because there are no holes punched in the other side of the paper, I can’t just flip it over
