⭐ The Basement is many books in one. It is a uniquely written modern day thriller. It is a book that will make your heart race from the beginning to the end. The Basement takes you inside the mind of a demented, sadistic, rapist and serial killer. Yes, the heart of the story is told by the serial killer in the first person. The serial killer describes what he is feeling as he commits unspeakable acts. It may be a little too extreme for some people.Author Stephen Leather is a highly skilled master of the thriller and a bit of a trickster. As you read this book (which you may just read in one overnight session), you will think you have the mystery figured out. You don’t. It’s cleverly written with shocking twists and turns and a mind blower of an ending. If you are okay with gruesome crime drama such as the TV show Criminal Minds, you will love this book.

⭐ Although only as long as half of a standard Stephen King short story, this tale of a sicko serial killer hits all the right notes, and hits them in quick succession. Someone is reducing the numbers in the secretarial pool one female at a time, and the prime suspect is an anti-social and unsuccessful writer of screenplays named Marvin.Marvin has a genius level IQ, and the only thing between him and success is the huge wall constructed by the Secretaries of this world, barring his work from getting into the right hands.On the case are two NYPD detectives, who have their work cut out for them trying to deal with Marvin, who gets more and more obnoxious at each meeting. While this is going on, the reader gets a view from the eyes of the killer as the next victim is tortured and abused.The torture sequences do not evoke stomach-churning nausea, but the brutality is obvious and you know you wouldn’t want to be there. The writing style isn’t the best, and the brevity takes away somewhat from the plot development, but the ending comes from out of nowhere, and it ain’t a happy ever after.Amanda Richards, December 31, 2011

⭐ I have been reading Stephen leather books for many years now and have read almost everything he has written. But am sorry to say that if this was the first book of his I read I would most probably never read another book by him. It is just so different from this normal style of writing. I just hope this is the last book to be written by him in this style.

⭐ The book was too short for me, I was reading it in my Kindle for Ipod app and was taken by surprise when I noticed I was almost done with it after just reading it for a few hours.However, the story makes up for it. It was extremely engaging and entertaining. The plot twist at the end was great, and I honestly couldn’t get enough of the story as I was reading.The actual writing is very poor. I found a few grammatical errors and at times was disappointed with the way the book is written. Luckily, this doesn’t bother me enough since the story was interesting, I don’t care if it’s not quality literature, it’s a very good read and will keep you entertained.

⭐ Just a few words:1. nobody uses typewriters2. nobody gets executed by electricityAt the text says at the end, Mr. Leather is a Brit. Obviously, American and Czech humor (I am after many years here still a Czech) are different. Maybe I am too old.So, after reading the entire opus, only 1 star for something that should not have been ever published in the USA. Some stuff just does not travel well…

⭐ Midway through my teeth commence to grind, by the end my teeth ached, not because the story was hair-raising, spine-chilling or blood-curdling…more in the realm of nerve-wracking. For the most part my irritation was due the endless repetition of the word I; avoidance of this word in the future will be found written in bright red, overtaking the upper most position of my bucket list. Nothing new, nothing original, nothing scary. Why it was entitled The Basement is beyond me. Finally (and being fully aware of using The Word here), I feel fortunate to have purchased this book at a minimum price, however, I’ll never regain the time I exhausted reading it.

⭐ I agree with one of the other reviewers that this book was just an advertisement for the authors other books. Don’t waste your money. I did not buy the ending, who the killer turned out to be, and that the writer in the story came to the end he did. The main character is described as a struggling writer, which made me think he was in at least his 30’s, but was actually in his early 20’s. Someone that young hasn’t earned the right to be considered struggling.

⭐ This turns out shorter than a full novel, but a bit longer than a novella; falling somewhere in-between. There’s really only a cast of four. A whacked misfit and self-proclaimed writer, a woman captive in the basement, and two cops. The setting is New York, but that really doesn’t matter when it comes to the plot.The story alternates between the main character, Marvin Waller, and his dealings with the cops. It also deals with a sadistic narrative seen through the serial killer’s eyes dealing with a captive woman in the basement.Throughout the story, the cops are a man and a woman who come across as good cop/bad cop. They are convinced Marvin is the serial killer and are out to nail him. Marvin, though a misfit, is quite ingenious in outsmarting his two pursuers. Much of the pursuit is dialogue and mind games.The novel isn’t really long enough to fully develop some characters. They remain pretty much two dimensional. When the ending comes, it comes very quickly and there’s quite a surprise to it. Part of the ending I liked. Did it fit the narration of the serial killer? There, I’m not so sure. Still, I found it a fast, rather suspenseful read

He frequently goes to the apartment buildings where they live in New York City, hoping to put one of his scripts in their hand. He knows he’s a terrific writer. If only he could get one script read by someone who will recognize it. Unfortunately, Marvin’s scripts never get past a director’s secretary. Marvin hates secretaries.His stalking brings him to the attention of the NYPD’s Homicide Division. There’s a serial killer loose in The Big Apple and Marvin fits the profile of one perfectly. Detectives Turner and Marcinko think he could be the one they’re after. Is Marvin the killer?This is a creepy story by one of my favorite British writers, Stephen Leather. I thoroughly enjoy his Dan ‘Spider’ Shepherd book series. THE BASEMENT is a stand-alone novel (or novella) that is entertaining but creepy. There is a lot of sadistic violence toward a female victim in it, so I don’t think many women will like it. Think SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and you’ll understand what I mean. While I enjoyed it, I don’t think it is one of Leather’s best. 3.5 Stars

⭐ I was happy to find another book by Stephen Leather, but couldn’t wade thorough the yuck of the mind of his main character. I got about 1/3 into it and figured that there were so many good stories left to read in the world, that I didn’t have to finish this one if I didn’t want to do so. So that’s .my review of this book. I just didn’t care what happened,
