Description

Long awaited and eagerly anticipated, this remarkable volume allows English-speaking readers to experience a profound dialogue between the German philosopher Martin Heidegger and the Swiss psychiatrist Medard Boss. A product of their warm friendship, Zollikon Seminars chronicles an extraordinary exchange of ideas. Heidegger strove to transcend the bounds of philosophy while Boss and his colleagues in the scientific community sought to understand their patients and their world. The result: the best and clearest introduction to Heidegger’s philosophy available.Boss approached Heidegger asking for help in reflective thinking on the nature of Heidegger’s work. Soon they were holding annual two-week meetings in Boss’s home in Zollikon, Switzerland. The protocols from these seminars, recorded by Boss and reviewed, corrected, and supplemented by Heidegger himself, make up one part of this volume. They are augmented by Boss’s record of the conversations he had with Heidegger in the days between seminars and by excerpts from the hundreds of letters the philosopher wrote to Boss between 1947 and 1971.

Editorial Reviews: From the Back Cover Long awaited and eagerly anticipated, this remarkable volume allows English-speaking readers to experience a profound dialogue between the German philosopher Martin Heidegger and the Swiss psychiatrist Medard Boss. A product of their long friendship, Zollikon Seminars: Protocols-Conversations-Letters chronicles an extraordinary exchange of ideas. Heidegger strove to transcend the bounds of philosophy while Boss and his colleagues in the scientific community sought to better understand their patients and their world. Boss approached Heidegger during World War II asking for help in reflective thinking on the nature of Heidegger’s work. A correspondence ensued, followed by visits that soon became annual two-week meetings in Boss’s home in Zollikon, Switzerland. The protocols from these seminars, recorded by Boss and reviewed, corrected, and supplemented by Heidegger himself, make up one part of this volume. They are augmented by Boss’s record of the conversations he had with Heidegger in the days between seminars and by excerpts from the hundreds of letters that Heidegger wrote to Boss between 1947 and 1971. For the first time, Heidegger makes the fundamental ideas of his philosophy accessible to nonphilosophers. Heidegger confronts certain philosophical/psychological theories, including Freudian psychoanalysis, Ludwig Binswanger’s and Boss’s forms of Dasein (existential) psychoanalysis, and Indian philosophy that he has never previously addressed. The lectures, correspondence, and conversations span twenty-five years, offering an ongoing view of Heidegger’s career and philosophical development. A richly detailed picture of one of the century’s great philosophers, Zollikon Seminars is the best and clearest introduction to Heidegger’s philosophy available. About the Author MARTIN HEIDEGGER (1889–1976) is one of the most influential twentieth-century philosophers. Among his many works are Being and Time and Parmenides.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐If your widely read in Heidegger then these are worthwhile – but beware if your not- these notes (some by Heidegger. some by others) do not constitute a coherent set of ideas or theories- rather they sketch at the edges of Heidegger’s work with a great deal of psychoanalytic overlay. The interplay is sometimes interesting, but often not.

⭐Of course, yes, Heidigger is going to be confusing. But this unique collection of conversations with Medard Bossamong others, will clarify said confusion, if you give it a chance and appreciate the rare dialogues here. Its not anintroduction to philosophy text, but i found very good at bring phenomenology, dreams and therapy out of the abstract, into looking at how they present themselves, without philosophical, moral, abstract overlays.

⭐TO review this, for what ‘it’ is worth ‘it’ being merely ‘words’ :’The history of language shows everywhere a universal tendency towards a narrowing and leveling down of the meaning of words’ (p.49)……..’To be absorbed ‘ by something..does not mean ”to be dissolved” like suger in water, but rather ‘to be totally preoccupied by something”, …then he exists authentically as who he is, that is, in his task’ (p.160)’Dasein means being absored in that toward which I comport myself…..’ (p.161)(against Freud’s scientism ID/Ego/S-Ego and Schopenheurian-model of human beings driven by ‘will’) …’The determining factor is not an urge or a drive driving and urging me from behind, but something standing before me, a task’ (p.173)This is an interesting and, having read it, obvious criticism for H to make against F. I ‘ve never read H discussing F, so this was interesting for me; however whilst the translator and editor talk in some detail about H’s relationship with F, Heidegger himself only mentions Freud in passing to merely critise him for reducing the human being to a present-at-hand subject (rather that the above quotes that show dasein is always already his situation too). The letters section was ‘OK’ – no shocking/interesting revelations……However, on the plus side it does break down and make more accessible some difficult parts of B&T – the first 150 pages where great – revelations on logic (p.130), anthropomorphism (p.144) science (or anti-science – p.56-9, and even an intriguing debate on whether time exists with respect to a time before man (p.177)YOu should probably buy this – it is new Heidegger material after all.

⭐This book is Being and Time for therapists. It is dense and varied. Because it is the account of a series of seminars it lacks a cogent thematic approach which will put some readers off no doubt. However I see it more as a book to which you turn to from time to time – read small sections and then meditate on their implications for a while. I am pretty sure this will be a source of inspiration for many years. For a thorough and thematic treaty try Boss’s book which came out of this process ‘Existential Foundations of Medicine and Psychology’.
