In these lectures, delivered in 1933-1934 while he was Rector of the University of Freiburg and an active supporter of the National Socialist regime, Martin Heidegger addresses the history of metaphysics and the notion of truth from Heraclitus to Hegel. First published in German in 2001, these two lecture courses offer a sustained encounter with Heidegger’s thinking during a period when he attempted to give expression to his highest ambitions for a philosophy engaged with politics and the world. While the lectures are strongly nationalistic and celebrate the revolutionary spirit of the time, they also attack theories of racial supremacy in an attempt to stake out a distinctively Heideggerian understanding of what it means to be a people. This careful translation offers valuable insight into Heidegger’s views on language, truth, animality, and life, as well as his political thought and activity.

⭐One of the best scholars in Greek thought. So much for non sequitur, ad hominem statements from individuals who can’t get past the veneer of illusion and bias and thus incapable of rendering an intellectual assessment of Heidegger’s insights while appreciating the undeniable caliber of the thoughts of perhaps one of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century.

⭐Exceptionally fine translation, careful, accurate and clear, serving the public by the unvarnished presentation of the most odious, nauseating, and unforgivably violent thoughts of the most contemptible philosopher in modern times.

⭐Really clear and interesting Heidegger lecture course. The transfer to eBook is excellent except for one thing: instead of using unicode or some other character standard, the ancient greek words are all images scanned in and it’s very irritating. This alone makes me wish I bought the print edition instead. Either using transliteration into the latin alphabet or, as I say, unicode, would have been much preferable.

⭐La faille de FriedLorsque Fried a traduit ces deux leçons de Heidegger données en 1933 et 1934 il savait à quel point elles étaient monstrueuses. Victor Farias et Emmanuel Faye avaient ouvert les yeux des lecteurs sur la participation de Heidegger au processus d’extermination nazi et surtout sur le rôle de prédicateur joué par Heidegger dans ce régime politique barbare. Fried n’en a pas tenu compte. Il attire dans son avant–propos l’attention du lecteur sur les difficultés de traduction dues à la nature du vocabulaire de Heidegger et sur le seul fait qu’en 1933 il était recteur de l’université dans le cadre de ce régime. La mise en garde du lecteur américain, puisque c’est à lui avant tout que cette traduction s’adresse, est donc très nettement insuffisante. On ne peut pas aujourd’hui se contenter de traduire Heidegger sans attirer l’attention du lecteur sur la monstruosité de sa pensée. Certes dans la traduction plus récente d’un autre cours de Heidegger, celui portant sur la signification de l’Etat et sur son rôle, Fried et ses collaborateurs se sont efforcés de remettre les pendules à l’heure mais le mal était fait. Heidegger est présenté ici comme un auteur respectable dont la pensée mérite d’être connue, non pour être combattue, mais pour être suivie. Or Heidegger est le prédicateur du national-socialisme et, en tant que tel le dirigeant suprême du régime. C’est lui qui a préparé « l’assaut » dans le « but de l’anéantissement total », « the goal of total annihilation » (§3, p. 73).Faire connaître un auteur par une traduction ne suffit pas. Il faut préparer le lecteur à ce qu’il va lire et lui donner les éléments nécessaires pour prendre le recul nécessaire afin qu’il soit en mesure de faire une lecture critique. Or dans cet ouvrage Fried a failli à sa tâche. Lecteurs de langue anglaise vous allez lire l’ordre suprême d’extermination donné par Heidegger au peuple allemand, ordre pour l’exécution duquel il a instauré, la même année 1933, Hitler en tant que guide et « loi présente et future du peuple allemand », et appelé, en même temps, en tant que dirigeant suprême de l’université, les étudiants à l’engagement (Einsatz). Nous conseillons vivement aux lecteurs de lire l’ouvrage d’Emmanuel Faye : Martin Heidegger, L’introduction du nazisme dans la philosophie, avant de lire la traduction de Heidegger effectuée par Gregory Fried. Faire le contraire serait mettre la charrue avant les bœufs. Or dans ce domaine, mettre la charrue avant les bœufs équivaut à faire du prosélytisme même si Grégory Fried s’en défend – mais seulement dans des textes plus tardifs. Le style de Heidegger est tel que tout le monde n’a pas forcément la compétence voulue pour échapper aux ruses de sa sophistique et à la perversité hyper diabolique de sa pensée.
